Some people will always remain miserable and negative, no matter what. I can bet some of the people here would like him fail just so they can say I told you so.

I am very excited about this signing, I hope the moaners on here don't try to rip hinm to shreds early, but people love to hate for some reason.

I also believe we will sing some other 'old' type striker before end of the window. Nothing exciting but someone past it a little bit, which has not worked out for us too well last couple times. Maybe this time it will.

In age 16-21 Rooney is the best player I’ve ever seen. No doubt. I see very little Rooney in Højlund. Apparently that is needed to put out, despite me never even insinuating that Højlund is at Rooney’s level or resemble his style.

I however find it comical that posters like you and Cassidy put soooo mind numbingly much focus on his (lack of) goals relative to his fee - and then the moment someone dare to point to our history books of transfers where goals scored wasn’t impressive (by your measurements) yet we still broke transfer records and had massive success, you deliberately misrepresent the intentions and make it out like I compare Højlund to Rooney. I’m not.

But when you present transfer strategies like “9 league goals players shouldn’t cost this” you should expect to be handed examples where that strategy would’ve been the wrong approach, cause we wouldn’t have gotten Rooney or Law with it.
You're missing the point entirely. Rooney was a generational specimen so the lack of goals were palatable.

That went without saying from the poster.

What he said!

He is overpriced, yes, but he's young, talented, built for the PL and has a name that sounds kind of like the Yeti from across the way...

In a world where Rice is worth £100m and Elanga £15m, the price doesn't seem too bad considering the relative cost of strikers and the paucity of decent alternative options (weren't getting Kane from Levy's sticky grasp, period).

I agree. I think we now have the spine of PL winning squad and it's up to ETH to make that a reality in the next 2/3 seasons.

To make it make more sense, their reported bid of 50m euros is roughly more in line with his value. Cool.
That is a better way to state it, but that is still only the value according to you. The value to us is much higher because we desperately need a striker, and decent ones are very hard to come by at the moment. Atalanta of course know this.

Why is this thread so depressing? Heard the news late and came to celebrate in that innocent giddiness we all have before reality (for better or for worse) hits.

Even if he ends up tanking (I don't think he will as his physical attributes and style of play give us something we've been lacking for ages), we'd still have all had this time together

Incidentally, all we're getting is full blown warfare over the price! :nono:

Supporting a team is supposed to be fun. Like gambling if it starts being a constant source of misery, maybe it's not worth it

A bit weird there mate.

I can't believe how many times I've read this, this summer  if I find a pot of gold at the end of the garden I'll be over the moon.
I said if fit. Yeah its ridiculous. But that's where we are. We played fking Weghourst last season. You would have been locked up if you suggested that last summer. You would have also been laughed at if you suggested Hojlund as your main striker. Its fkd but it is what it is. We still need Martial. Even if its wheeling him out on a wheelchair for 30 mins here and there

fecks sake, this Rasmus Haaland fella cost us more than the entire team that won us the title back in the 1908. Pants pulled down again, balls wiggling around in the wind. Mangnall turning around in his grave.

Obviously we are over paying, but with decent strikers few and far between paying over the odds for a good prospect seems to be the only way forward.

There is at least a chance this works out as we actually have a manger good at developing players.

He is a brilliant back up striker. That's how he should be.treated and it would be unfair and setting him up to fail if he is seen as a main striker. I fully expect Martial if fit and Rashford to play majority of the games as striker. Or we get another striker late in the window.

People think the fee indicates he must start but main strikers are 100 mill plus. Back up strikers around 60 by the look of it.

I'd bet my house he is in the starting lineup from day 1. A world class main striker is 100m. A good young prospect from a middling Serie A side is 72m.

ETH doesn't rate Martial and knows Rashford is best on the left.

See if a lot of posters blindly defending the fee as though it represented objective fair value would have just said this instead, there wouldn't be pages of disagreement.

There isn't much to suggest he's worth the fee, its a massive gamble and the risk in the purchase has to be reflected in the fee (it isn't here)
Your opinion on this must be a bit depressing. Again, why don’t you wait and see?

Possibly you don’t value his attributes much but I think he’s got all the foundations and, to me, even his performances and return at his age, do suggest he might be worth the fee once you project all that forward to what he is likely to give us. He’s not the finished article, for example he misses some easy chances, but why worry? I think he will prove to be worth the money. Like most investments, the outcome is unknown but the promise is built into his current value. I don’t see the point of the gloom.

Do not agree with this mentality at all. We have not spent £64m on a player to be a backup striker. That's just ridiculous thinking. Especially given our dismal goalscoring record. Who is he coming here to backup?

Also, and more to the point, the guy is 20 years old FFS. How can you cap his potential at backup striker when he has barely even started a career? He must be, and will be, given every chance to become the club's lead striker. The age and the price tag demands that he is given every chance to come good and I have a good feeling about him and strongly believe he will come good fairly quickly.

All the blubbing about us overpaying reminds me of the time when we signed Casemiro. Some people just look for the negatives.

Every time a player touches the ball, I think the stadium announcer should be announcing exactly how much they cost, value in the market is the real quiz, who cares about trophies.

I dont remember the casemiro winging to be fair. The scoff at fee is more justified here than with Casemiro though. The latter was the best DM in the world.

I agree with this. He's going to be our centre-forward, it's not like we have another specialist for that position. He's not a boy, he's a tall, strong young man and he'll be fine.

Sad thing is, if old Rasmus doesn’t hit the ground running, then half of them will be turning against him
These types of signings are what our club and our success has been built on. They don’t always work out but then how many transfers have post Fergie.

Once again we panic and overpay, no doubt after PSG threw their hat in the ring. And Jamie Jackson is right we might as well have just coughed up another 28-30m for Kane.
You think we overpaid for Hojlund, yet think Jamie Jackson is correct in thinking £100m would get you Kane? Dealing with Levy in the process?

Get a darts announcer "ONE HUNDRED AND EIIIIIIGHTY million"

ETH does rate Martial.

"I want him to be because he’s a great player – he definitely has the qualities to play in top football – and when he is fit our team plays better"

To the people saying Onana will be feeding him long balls all match, that's the part I'm worried about. Hojlund's aerial ability is not good, that's something he needs to work on.

There was a heck of a lot of people saying he was past it and we were fleeced at the price we paid.

I really don't know why players would want to join our team with the sort of support they get from some fans who write them off before they even kick a ball, just because they aren't the sexy name they want.

The thing that baffles me is some wanting the least sexy names over this lad! People genuinely asking why we can't just sign Iheanacho instead  :wenger:

Based on what I've read and heard in press conferences, Jamie Jackson is a bit uncouth. Not sure if it's natural or a move to engineer more clicks, but it makes me doubt his credibility. Especially when subtitlty and precision is required.
Press reporting Kane wants £600,000 a week, that is another reason we cannot sign him, apart from Levy won't sell to us unless it was well over £100m and I mean well over.

We need to keep this practical. Maybe we could change the shirt number to transfer fee and wages. Perhaps one step further it should be the yearly amortised number to avoid the numbers being too high as they will be difficult to read.

Could believe when his name was mentioned. He couldn't even get in a Leicester side that got relegated. If Toney had not been a naughty boy we might have gone for him, but the fee would likely have scuppered us unless we didn't spend elsewhere. I can actually see Greenwood being gradually intergrated back in.

I think this kid has great potential to be a 25 goal a season player, but I wouldn’t be concerned if he only got 10-12. I think just someone with his physical presence and pace up front will be of great benefit to our team as a whole. Too often last season we lacked a target in the box, and someone to create space for our midfielders, so hopefully Højlund can help address these issues at least.
