Rasmus Højlund | Signed for United

I bet it’ll be £50m up front, and £20m further in add ons (half of which will be stretching add ons, like winning EPL, ECL, Ballon D’or).

The media will report this as a £70m signing, when it would be announced as a £50m signing for City or Liverpool.

Come on, Kane’s the real deal. He’s a PL great and a bonafide goal machine.

If people are willing to believe that Højlund is worth £60m, then Kane is an absolute bargain at £100m.
I'm not debating Kane's ability or greatness.

I'm just not a fan of spending £100m on a 30 year old.

Hojlund has his entire career ahead of him. £60m on a 6 year (5+1, as reported by media) contract is £10m per year. He really has to be poor to not make this good value.

I agree. Also, kulusevski for £25m.
Sterling for £45m
Trossard for £25m
Manor Solomon for even free.

We overpay because:

A) United tax
B) We only chase one target all summer and everything we do leaks, so clubs know they have us where they want us

Yeah got to give the manager what he wants whoever that is. I’d they don’t work out after 2/3 seasons only then can we stop this for me.

For all we know it’s Kane we are after and these links are leaked by us… hopefully within the next 2 weeks we have someone…anyone for our main striker.

What exactly is the Sabitzer connection, coached at Bayern, what does that mean?
Also having the same agent with Hojlund is really stretch of a connection.
Eriksen wasnt coached by ETH at Ajax so ex Ajax connection doesnt work either.
I think Eriksen trained with Ajax when he was recovering from his heart scare and before he signed for Brentford.

This is almost like the logic we saw when Moyes was given the job… it’s dangerous.

Højlund is statistically more likely to be a dud than he is to be a true great like Kane / Haaland - and that’s not a slight upon him, that’s the case for every 20yo striker that’s 18 goals into their career.

People start believing that ‘potential’ is almost guaranteed. It isn’t.

He might end up a Haaland / Kane and I hope he does, but it’s more likely he won’t.

Thus - the price should lower, or if you’re gonna pay big, go the whole way and get Kane.

It's ridiculous that it takes an entire transfer window (or sometimes 2 or even 3 transfer windows) for us to bid for a player. Always some drama.
Meanwhile, clubs like LFC and even AFC are able to get their business done quickly. I've watched several documentaries on footballers and they all say that when they are sold it is done very quickly with little notice.
The negotiating team at MUFC should be fired. They are beyond incompetent.
Either make the deal or move on to another target.
Maybe I'm forgetting somebody but have United and Liverpool not made the same number of signings this summer?

Feck me the service is woeful. As a dane I really hope he finds a new club.

At times it looked like they purposely didn’t pass to him and often tried a shot instead of squaring it to him for a tap in or at least a shot at goal.

The point is there aren't any strikers available and you will need to massively overpay just to get one.
For half of Hojlund's minimum fee, Atalanta are essentially replacing Hojlund with a youngster a year older but who has scored two fewer goals in 800 fewer minutes. Chelsea signed Nicolas Jackson for €30mn who scored 12 goals and had 4 assists in fewer minutes than Hojlund played for Atalanta. Georges Mikhautadze of Metz is 22 but scored 23 goals and had 8 assists and he's playing in Ligue 2 in France. He looks like an absolute gem and wouldn't cost that much.

We aren’t moving to a fresh target now

There’s also Santiago Gimenez from Feynoord I watched against Roma and liked the look of him. 15 goals in 21 games worth of minutes in Eredivisie and 5 goals in europa. We can definitely do cheaper than Hojlund if we are going for potential type but it’s who ETH wants

Hold that laughter….

Ten Hag is not afraid to brazenly lie to journalists face. Nothing he says to the press should be taken at face value. He said there was no issues with Ronaldo before rocketing him out of the club, he said he was really happy with De Gea. He's making sure that his public words aren't going to cause issues for him privately. You can be sure he doesn't believe that if we are starting Sancho at centre forward we aren't goosed.

I would assume our scouting department has looked at these options but finding that Højlund has the best potential and fit to the team?

The problems you are describing relate to spending money poorly, and not necessarily not having enough money. Go to transfermarkt and see our transfer spend since the Glazers came. Each season individually and spanning across multiple years. We are consistently top spenders. We just spend poorly and then mismanage the assets we've purchased.

As for Hojlund/Kane, I am in the minority here too but I don't want 30 year old strikers who cost £100m. Regardless of how much money we have. Just doesn't make sense to me.
That’s a fair perspective and, in some ways, it beats wishing we had more money!

So we really intend to use this guy as our main striker this season? Or do you think EtH sees him as an rotational options while he develops?

I reckon the plan is for Hojlund/Rashford/Sancho to rotate the main striker role with Rashford/Sancho/Garnacho also playing the LW role.. Plenty of football for all then.

Ok so you think Utd haven't scouted any of these? You can bet they have and ETH wants a striker with Højlund's trades.

I am not saying Hojlund or any other player is guaranteed anything. Neither is Kane guaranteed to work out for us.

What I'm saying is that my preference is to spend £60m on a 20 year old over spending £100m on a 30 year old. And we're not even discussing the massive wages Kane would demand.

Exactly!

Appreciate the nice discussion and happy to disagree on some topics. In the end, this is why we're here, to read other views, some of which may not align with ours.

You said there was not strikers available and you have to pay massively if you want them. I've literally named three to disprove your point. Nothing to do with who's scouted who. Jackson looks class though so be surprised if any scout looked at him for €30mn and thought they would get twice the production from Hojlund.

What a pain transfers are now.

This should be really straightforward but on it drags.

oh you make it sound so easy dealing with million upon million of pounds and various different departments and stages of sign off.

Didn’t realise it was as easy as eBay!

We’ve been pretty quick this season. This transfer was always going to take a bit of negotiating though.

I don’t want to be a party pooper but let’s keep in mind this guy is not the finished article. Not even close.

We initially spoke about him a month or two ago as a good back up for Kane or Osimhen, now he’s being touted as a Scandinavian rival for Haaland and exactly what we need, which is insane.

Ideally he comes in and is given a year or two under ETH to improve but expecting plenty of goals off the bat isn’t happening.

If Martial can stay fit I’m more then happy for him to be our first choice with Hojlund playing a partial role and eventually taking over as our main striker.

Højlund is apparently a elite prospect and we are probably paying for that. I guess we will see how well the money will be spent and to be fair Chelsea have been shocking lately with their recruitment.

I think all this stuff is interesting. My take is that EtH is not interested in stats that tell you “how many” of this or that and who ranks where for this metric or that one. He is looking at fundamental attributes, physical, technical and mental. He is trusting his judgement over top line data. If he’s a good judge, that’s brilliant. We really don’t know yet whether he is or not.

Well that's the thing isn't it, so many people are focused on BuT 9 GoAlS, if that's all that mattered we obviously wouldn't be going for Hojlund. There's much more to scouting and evaluating a player than this, especially a young player. There's a reason ETH and the recruitment team are at United whilst people here are just commenting opinions on a football forum but that won't stop them from thinking their scouting and knowledge is superior to one of the biggest football clubs on the planet.
