No way he should be our lead striker next season, I would definitely keep him as 3rd or 4th choice where he would have less pressure to learn and train hard. His game IQ is poor atm at least give a try of watching great strikers of past which could help.
Worrying signs for us going into the remaining part of the season as our lead striker not producing any goal threat.

Hojlund must learn to make counter-intuitive runs.

the last goal Nunez scored last night was a perfect example of count-intuitive run.

I can't post image so let me post a link to the image:

in situation like this, most (poor) strikers would intuitively run in red arrow - hojlund exactly loves to run like that. but in reality, making a run as green arrow would open up more space due to inertia of defender and make it a greater goal threat.

Honestly feels like we’re playing with 10 men sometimes when he’s on the field. He hides from the ball and doesn’t give our wing backs an option to surpass the press or when he does get the ball in those situations he loses it.

Much rather Zirkzee which might not be the finisher that Holjund is but helps our overall game.

We need an upgrade on both asap

That green arrow could be due to instruction from manager to move wide draw defender wide so your wide player can cut in and get numerical advantage in the box with AM stepping up, problem I see with Hoj is,he stays close with defenders even during those runs as you pointed in red instead of running between those defenders which gives enough room to strike the ball.

I like Hojlund and I feel he can finish but it's clear he's a player that needs time and patience to develop but we've put him in a situation where it's difficult to do that. He still can't really play with his back to goal and his movement hasn't been great. Add that to the fact that at times we don't create anything for him and the fact we very much over paid for him by 30 million. Add all those things together and this is what we get.

I still feel he would have been fine right now as a backup striker to a better more experienced forward. We could have gotten a top striker before if we hadn't wasted money on Anthony and Mount. That's 140mil right there

A big reason as to why we were so terrible today. Worst forward we've ever had, not even League 2 level.

Yes, a player who came on with less than 10 minutes to go and when we were already losing 3-1 is why we were so terrible today. Maybe just admit you didn’t watch the game instead of embarrassing yourself in public.

Love this thread. Ha Ha. Starts with 'I love him' he'll be great etc. Now 'he should be 3rd or 4th choice'. Ha ha.

Opinions and situations aren't fixed and constantly evolve. Just because you feel one way in July, doesn't mean you have to feel the exact same way in January.

This guy has 2 PL goals this season. He shouldn't be the starting striker for Manchester United.

Maybe instead you should recognise the sarcasm in mocking the absolutely terrible takes in this thread everytime Hojlund takes the pitch instead of embarassing yourself in public.

I doubt that strikers in L2 try to control the ball with their back. :)

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

The moment it hit him on the back sums him up really, can't blame him for today but that moment you realised he has zero awareness of what's going on around him.

Said it last season, if he'd signed for Crystal Palace you'd be looking at him and thinking jesus another average striker in the Premier league.

At this point I've lost my faith in him, he has the physical attributes but lacks so many basic technical abilities that I don't think he can be developed to an elite or even a functional striker for the premier league.

It's just too many flaws in his game, his awareness, his movement, his aerial threat, his ball control it's all below par, he's not a target man, he's not a false 9, he's not a killer, I know it sounds cliche but playing him feels like playing with 10. He can't retain a ball to save his life, his runs don't open up any kind of spaces for others to take advantage, his physicality is of no use to play hoff ball as somehow he manages to lose every single aerial duel.

Seriously I wouldn't have him even as a rotational option, if we can get 20-30M take the loss and move on.

I think Zirkzee linked up well with his team-mates, had some nice passes too. Was far from the worst player on the pitch.

Another one for the deadwood pile.

At least he's not on an outrageous wage, so we should be able to recoup a bit of that £70m

We were terrible for the 80 odd mins before he even got on the pitch, blaming Hojlund for that is complete nonsense

Surely, there is a player in the U21s or even U18 that could do a better job than this melt? He has done the square root of zero ever since Amorin arrived really and looks clueless - the biggest let down since the new manager arrived if you ask me. Absolute waste of a place on the bench. Makes you wonder if there is anything in what Amorin says about Rashford not been good enough if this lad gets on the pitch - Rashford must be turbo shit in training.

Keep saying it but without a major improvement in his touch everything else, his movement, instincts, are pretty much irrelevant. You can't be the 9 for a top club with a touch like that unless you are scoring at Haalands rate.

There should be an investigation into how much he falls over, Ive never witnessed the likes of it.

It's like a toddler learning to walk, I feel like saying "ooopsie daisies" about 20 times a game.

More like an investigation into why on earth we spent 72 million on him and his agent being the same as the managers

He looked kind of sulky after coming on, after he had a half arsed attempt to keep the ball he had another moment later to show for the ball and he's got his head down looking away and walking around like he's just ran a marathon and not interested in helping the team for those final minutes. Shocking attitude for a young player.

Needs pads for his arse. As he's always sitting on it for most of the game. He's massively gone backwards.

Surely the coaches can see this happening, why hasn't improved on his inability to control balls under pressure.

No where near good enough, but its pretty clear by now the CAF hates the kid. comes on at 82 minutes and doesnt really do nothing, and gets blasted here. Zirkzee did nothing for 82 minutes but zero comments.

To be fair the team just got loads worse for the change. Zirkzee was crap in the first half, but I thought he was doing fine in the 2nd with his holdup play, usually drawing 3 or 4 blue shirts and helping us get up the pitch. Losing that hurt us.

Ironically we'd probably have done better with Hojlund in the first half when Rangers had a 36-year-old centre half to run at. Provided he chose to run at him rather than scrap with him, of course.

I have the feeling he would have scored today if he had started instead of JZ. Europa league is where he's his strongest self. Maybe Amorim plans to start him against Fulham, but otherwise it implies he is not happy with him.

Barely played and still lacked intensity.

His press is lethargic. Hes not making any noteworthy runs with or without the ball. I don’t expect much from him anymore.

No it didn't.

We had control of that half for all but the 10 minutes after the change.
We were undone by a ball over the top. There wasn't any difference in the overall pattern of the game before or after the change. Unless you believe Hojlund coming onto the pitch influenced the concentration levels of Maguire and Dalot.
