I've said it a few times that my jury was out when it came to Rasmus, but they're getting closer and closer to reaching a verdict.

He seems to be a decent finisher but he's terrible in every other aspect of being a centre forward.

His hold up play is diabolical. There was one occasion in the 1st half I think where we was holding the ball up and holding off the defender and I thought "this is better Hojlund". And then he can't even play a 5 yard pass to a teammate and falls backwards on his arse. Terrible.

Half fit Martial brings something to the team atleast a guy that can turn around with the ball at his feet, lay it off to runners on the side, carry the ball and even find passes in between the lines. I’m not even talking about his dribbling in tight spaces or his cool infront of goal.

Højlund had a chance after 1 minute today the ball went through his leg no anticipitation. He got a nice cross aswell couldn’t get his head on it. The situation where he throws a tantrum torwards Amad what does he expect he’s shown clearly he can’t handle the ball in tight spaces why would he want to give him the ball there.

Højlund doesn’t have the X factor he might score in Europa but the Premier League is a different beast. If we can serve him chances on a plate sure he might have a role to play as a sub but we can’t do that and thats not how football works.
 
If we could find a way to get Osimhen in in January to take the pressure off Rasmus that would be excellent business.

Problem is, I wonder how much damage this period will have done to him. Rasmus will need to show a great level of determination and humility to accept taking a step back and working hard to learn his trade as a 9 at this level.

I think he’s a good lad with a decent character, and I’ve not lost all faith in him just yet. But I will concede that after 1.5 seasons the gamble has not worked as he is still not ready and we quite simply cannot stand still and wait.
 
He's not good enough for this league. Brings nothing. Probably not fair on him to be the number 9 for this club either.
 
Horrible player.. He looks like a kid playing against grown men, so out of his debth it's unreal. How on earth did we pay all that money for him. Atalanta must be pissing themselves laughing every time they watch him play for us.

Indeed. I genuinely don't understand the logic. I don't know if he will be a success or not but the fee behind the deal, his output and his career trajectory doesn't scream £64m.

I only watched him a couple of times for Atalanta, once was against Napoli where he was so bad he was substituted at half time. Kim played him like a fiddle that game.

If we look deeper into his season, his first 90 minute game was in January, it took another month for his second 90 minute game.

He scored 9 goals, they were against Monza X2(two different games), Spezia, Bologna, Salernitana, Lecce, Empoli, Hellas Verona. The only good team he scored against was Lazio. With Bologna (9th) the only other top half team he scored against.

What on earth were the club smoking?

I was thinking the EXACT same thing watching the game! I can tell you what Larsen does for Wolves: holds up the ball, occupies defenders (even bullied Maguire at times), and is a threat from headers. I can't tell you what Hojlund does for us other than the odd good finish when he has decent space, or is up against non-PL defenders. He can't hold a feather up, has no touch to speak of, is often a step behind the cross/play, and is too busy wrestling with defenders to manipulate them to where he wants them to go.

If he likes a physical battle, he should look to Drogba, and expert at pinning defenders and rounding them or playing around them. But he doesn't have that physicality, and often loses duels. Saw Amorim trying to tell him to curve his runs behind the defender rather than engage a couple of games ago. Does he listen feck!

I judge players in their second season, and he's failing badly.
 
He has been setup to fail from the beginning.

A 20 year old should not be the starting CF for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

The summer he arrived it should have been to play as backup to a more experienced CF.

His second season, nothing was learnt and the geniuses in charge decided to add a second inexperienced CF who has looked even more out of his depth than Hojlund.

What makes it even worse is the wide players are also inexperienced kids.

How can you spend so much money and basically end up with a bunch of kids trying to learn their positions!
 
That header he didn’t connect with in the box is happening too often and is worrying. A new striker who knows what he is doing is critical. The whole result could have been different if he had scored that.

I remember that friendly the summer before we signed him, where Atalanta scored 14 goals or something silly, but he didn't get a single goal.
 
Worried about him now, really like the kid but not sure he will make it here.

Was that from the Mainoo cross in the first half? A top class CF is getting across the defender at the near post and heading that home. Rasmus is nearly always a day late and a dollar short. It's like he's not expecting it or something!

You're right, he seems to get there just too late quite alot.

Not convinced all this lack of service stuff is the main issue with him now.

It was a good excuse for people last season, but it doesn't wash now. At some point the focus has to be on him. I've always said positioning is poor.

I'm not really sure why people are surprised. It's not like he had a decent goal record before we signed him. We are getting what we signed.

He'll probably net a couple of goals, a couple of posters will come out the woodwork for a few days and start calling people out like last season who dared question him, before quickly disappearing back in their holes when normal service resumes.

It's not the lack of service, his movement and positioning is poor. He needs to bag a few to get some confidence and turn this rot around. But we still need a proper striker, he isn't the one to lead our line, a potential good option off the bench if he improves.
 
We need more. He doesn't get into the game enough and doesn't influence it enough. A large fault is that the players behind him are also in poor form or are underperforming, too. But, he's leading the line. We have to expect more from a player in his position.
 
This transfer is beginning to look as bad as Anthony.

Zirkzee should be starting ahead of him at least he has some quality in possession.

Zirkzee is at least as bad as Højlund, if not worse. If the roles had been swapped, it would have been Zirkzee getting the majority of the criticism tonight, which is what happened after Bournemouth. Zirkzee did nothing but give the ball away. Currently the striker that starts puts in a terrible performance, and then the guy from the bench might look slightly better, depending on the circumstances. Rinse and repeat.

We have managed to spend a load of money on two strikers that probably has potential for one okay'ish back-up between them. Incredible transfer work.

The only thing I will say in their defense is, that the way the team currently operates, they play the toughest position on the pitch. Often times they are in complete isolation and being fed with long balls with little support.
 
If you stuck Maguire upfront for the 13 league games that Hojlunds played, I’d reckon Maguire outscores him which says it all.

Hojlunds not it. Cash in on him in the summer.

Zirkzee is clearly better than Hojlund. His technical ability is far far better and this is also evident when you look at their analytics.

Zirkzee lost possession once vs Bournemouth, the same amount as Ras except Ras was on the pitch for less time.

They're both struggling because we don't have a left winger or left back capable of beating defenders or creating chances, Rashford and Garnacho have been appalling and Bruno while an excellent player doesn't effect the game by beating defenders 1v1 or with pace.

No team has ever won the premier league without a forward player who could make 2+ dribblers per game in the line up. We currently have zero which is why someone like Cunha would be a huge addition.

Not as much as he is with the opposition as they just keep tackling him and taking the ball off him or jump while he stands still and just head the ball to a teammate.
 
If you are a striker with potential shouldn’t you be able to put yourself in a position to get a shot of shouldn’t you be able to atleast get the ball to your feet and just create space to get a shot off. I rate Højlund as much as I rate Zirkzee but atleast looking atribute wise I prefer Zirkzees atributes to Højlunds.
 
He’s not all that, but was always likely to be the biggest loser of Rashford being out of the team too. Even less service now.
 
We really need a player who can become one of the best strikers in the world. Unfortunately, that sort of talent level isn't there.

I do feel sorry for him though, he makes runs that aren't picked out and players choose too shoot rather than pass when he's in a better position. It's a nasty combo of him not being very good and the service being bad.
 
The problem is Hojlund starts and plays so poorly we prefer Zirkzee then next game Zirkzee starts and plays so poorly we prefer Hojlund.

Neither is ever going to be good enough for us as a number nine.

Zirkzee does have other qualities where he could fit in but I would still see him getting some veggie Hojlund not just as there might be more suitors.

Either way we need a proper forward as quickly as possible in January
 
Terrible first touch. Terrible movement in between channels. Regularly fails to anticipate typical striker things like rebounds or getting on the end of crosses/passes across the goal in the 6 yard box. He always tends to drop back for a cutback when he would have just scored if he continued running. He does this very consistently.

He's a good finisher - I'll give him that. But he is very bad at getting himself in a position to finish for the reasons I mentioned and these are usually things you typically have or do not have. I would look to move on. If we could somehow combine Garnachos knack of finding himself in dangerous positions with Hojlund's finishing, we would have a great player in there, but I just don't see it.
 
Feel like I'm fully off the Hojlund train, sadly. He can be a decent goalscorer but I don't see a top player at all there. Hope he turns into something decent quick because he wouldn't be a reliable starter for any premier league club at this point

All this “he doesn’t get support” hides the fact that his movement is below average



He didnt even attempt to make the run and just stood there. Amad would have slotted him in, if he had made the forward run.
