"In football you need discipline on the pitch but also off the pitch - there is a line between. Every professional knows what is required. We have to focus on winning football games, that's all that matters. Every top professional knows what is required.

"The last two Premier League games, two goals and an assist - he is developing a strong bond with Rasmus Hojlund and we want to continue that process."

So, looks like ETH is going to start him tomorrow because winning games is all that matters!
Has anyone else observed this "strong bond" (because I haven't)?

So who's he dropping to bring sir rashy back in then?
With ten Hag mentioning the development of Hojlund and Rashford, and in light of the clear lack of any connection between Garnacho and Hojlund last match, I think Garna gets dropped. To be fair, Garnacho also needs to know that selfishness to that level is unacceptable. Unfortunately, Sir rashy is the only good replacement there.

Christ, what do you expect from the manager. To lay into Rashford in a press conference, to say that he's shite this season and no hope whatsoever of getting better. Ofcourse he's going to say it's a closed matter, that we're hopeful that he'll continue to produce goals and assists.

Not really but Rashford probably has linked up better with Hojlund than anyone else has managed - felt as though Hojlund might as well have been playing in a different team to Nacho and Antony at the weekend. Rashford has actually linked up fairly well with Nacho as well at times - Villa match particularly.

That's exactly what some want.

Winning is obviously all that matters, but I have my doubts if Rashford is a deciding factor in his current form.

Rashford is on the same selfish, self obsessed, "pity me pity me" path trodden by Pogba and then Lingard and like Pogba seems to believe he is more important than any other player in the squad and is bigger than the club. Rashford was without doubt an admirer of Pogba, especially it seems Pogbas self importance and image of himself. Pogba became pure poison for Manchester United, a toxic, egocentric serial whiner more interested in his own glory than that of the club, and Rashford, like Lingard, is going the same way. We should get shot of Rashford as soon as possible because I dont think his attitude is about to change for the better soon; in fact I imagine that as more criticism is heaped on him it will become worse and more self pitying.

Second time in three months, plus he’s been absolutely dog shit all season. There’s a whole culture of this at the club, it’s worth talking about. This is the sort of thing that should happen once and never again, not repeatedly.
The first time wasn't a punishable offence. Just bad optics.

Only once in the past 9 seasons have we been top 4 on goals scored in the league (the season we finished 2nd under Ole). We are currently 17th on goals scored in the league. Creating and finishing chances has been a consistent issue for us for a long time.

Now, I haven’t analysed the expected goals tallies for those seasons but I would be a bit surprised if they indicated that we actually create the chances and finishing them has been the main problem.

If anything, we have been a graveyard for attacking players. Look how Antony, Hojlund and Weghorst have all struggled. I’d agree with you if you said that there is bad recruitment but we are definitely not a team where players can come in and stat boost based on our amazing levels of chance creation from midfield.

I have hope that we might finally have some balance with a Cas-Mainoo-Bruno midfield and the Rash/Hoj/Nacho frontline, with Shaw and Martinez back as well. We will see how Rashford does if we do start to look a decent team again.
The only seasons where we've been good at scoring goals were under Ole so your point has merit. Under LVG goal scoring was an issue. Under Mourinho it fluctuated IIRC and same under ETH but even then, last season the only player who scored was Rashford really. Under Ole is the last time I remember us having multiple double digit scorers.

Also, the midfield composition is irrelevant because ETH has us basically bypassing them to leave it to the wingers to create chances. Bruno has been wasted under him this season.

So either we don't have enough people in the squad who are actually goalscorers or we play in a way that makes it difficult for them to become that?

Rashford is basically the only player we have who's consistently created chances for Hojlund. The number of times he's done that though shows how horrible our tactics and playing has been if he's the best.

Professional help with what? Organising private jets to fly all his waitresses around?

Jim White proving that there‘s no floor to how poor and lazy modern journalism is. Latest Telegraph article.

“A player who at his peak is almost Best-like in his ability to light up the pitch"….“The player's '12-hour bender' in Belfast has evoked memories of the original self-destructive Belfast Boy”.

Best never pointed to his head to exude focus though

And what has happened to him since couldn't have happened to a nicer person.

Think the amount of sponsors now, although good for income is also a distraction. If they all want a piece of the players then it can take their focus off their actual jobs. I know other teams have sponsors, but you wonder if they manage it better. We have always said about players doing extra work on the training field, but what if they actually can't because it is set aside for work with the sponsors.
I think all big teams and players have sponsors and their fair share of sponsorship duties but yeah, ours could well be too much - we are a commercial club first and foremost, and not a “football first” club as it’s been said plenty of times. I mean didnt we allow commercialism to dictate a silly preseason schedule? I don’t recall fully now but I remember reading a few moans on here about it.

He’s a 20 goal a season player when on it. I think overrated is harsh, because he clearly has talent, he’s just very inconsistent
The problem is, fans want an Henry/Salah level player in terms of quality and consistency especially when Rashford earns THAT amount of money which is more than those two for example ever earned despite them being far better players. Rashford is a little similar to Sterling for City in that he can pull great numbers when he's on his best form but he's just not really good enough to be considered world class.

Everyone was happy with his form last season and he was deservedly player of the year for us. Can he do it year in year out while improving some aspects of his game? I'm very doubtful. I hope he gets his head sorted out soon.

Odds on us seeing him put a shift in the next few games to prove a point before he resorts to jogging around the pitch again?

Always knew this would end with being brushed under the carpet with a mental health angle and an arm around his shoulder.

This clown has got the club wrapped around his little finger and can do no wrong. If he wasn't English and homegrown, the outcome and media sympathy would be very different.

If he plays against Wolves, there may be a slight difference in Rashford's enthusiasm, but it won't last. He'll be back walking around the pitch like he's too good to track back. EtH should start Rashford and sub him off after 5 minutes to make an example.

Annoying for he how it was so pre planned. You know full well you aren’t making training if you’re in a Dublin nightclub hours before you’re supposed to be at Carrington and he’s just not given a feck. They’ve had almost a fortnight off and he went out on Wednesday and it still wasn’t enough.

Inexcusable it’s a disgrace

Pogba, Lingard, Sancho and Rashford = Virus
Greenwood was on the same path before he totally fecked up.

The pre-seasons have gone mad. Agree, hopefully we are going to get back to being a football club first and footballers back to being footballers not wannabe models.

He does feel like he's that scenario people talk about sometimes where they say - "Put X in Y team and they'll easily score 15-20 goals a season". He's scored a lot for us but he's also been around for ages and basically plays every single game.

I think he's a good player but not a great one. His form has always been in patches and never really lasted a whole season. His importance has been inflated because he's from Manchester, shown quality at times when the club has been in the doldrums and been a lovely lad off the pitch (this is still the case really despite him clearly having something going on now).

In a Fergie Utd he's a squad player at best. Unfortunately he's such a big name now changing his role and game-time in the squad would never work. It would be a constant talking point about why he's not playing, even though it's quite clear he's not at the level needed.

He's likely destined for a career of moving to other clubs thinking he should be the main man and slowly finding out it doesn't work there either.
Not trying to contradict you just think in context Rashford's record is comparable.

Marcus Rashford 126 goals in 384 games,
OGS 126 goals in 366 games
Andy Cole 121 in 275

Andy Cole and Solskjaer played as strikers (not wingers) in a much better team at a time when scoring 3+ goals a game was pretty normal for Utd.... not saying Rashford is the bees knees, and I would rather have a peak Cole or OGS than I would Rashford, but his GPG stats are comparable to players we (I) hold in high regard.

But clearly stats are not everything, Rashford at his best is a better player that either Cole or OGS (IMO), problem is you always got a 6-7/10 performance from them, Rashford tends (a lot like the rest of this squad) to be a 9/10 or a 2/10 and unfortunately the 9/10 performances are in scarcity.

I am not giving Rashford a free pass, TBH I do not really care about the nightclub in the grand scheme of things his biggest transgression is being stupid enough to get caught, it's not like he shat in a nun's mouth (against her will!) he went out drinking, Christ at 26 I think I was hammered 90% of the time, if I had been minted then I would probably have died before I even reached 26.

But his form is criminal, end of the day he can do what the feck he likes off the pitch as long as it is consensual and doesn't involve cruelty to animals! just get it right on the pitch, and there IMO it is more ETH at fault than Rashford.... this team is so poorly set up that nobody is performing to their potential.... stick Pep, Klopp (or another decent manager who has any fecking clue about tactics) in charge of this team for a month and it would be transformed.

@vanderpants what's the scoop on Rashford and his brother coming into carrington today? Anything you can share without getting into trouble?
Sorry only just logged in and saw this, Not sure why he brought his brother on, he was also accompanied by a female, It is not unusual for his brother or best mate( he drivers for Marcus) to be at carrington. As you have heard in the press
he had a sit-down meeting with ETH and Sir Dave, he was also the last to leave Carrington, He tried alone on Monday as he missed the morning session due to his meeting.

I thought his brother is his agent? That would probably explain why he was there.

Maybe its a good thing that Rashford is showing this side of his character, everything is falling into a place for a revolution at this club. Bit before my time but from what I've read and heard could we be in a similar position to the mid/late 80's? with Klopp going and City's charges along with our new Ineos connection it feels like a change is imminent, Ratcliffe and his team need to work out what's worth keeping and what needs scraping, some people are making those decisions easy for him

The weaponising of mental health issues by bad actors continues.
He's clearly having a difficult time. No one who's making smart choices decides to feck of training for a bender in Belfast if they're professional footballer, you've got to imagine that your state of mind must be pretty fecked if you do that without any regard for the fallout or consequence. I'm not defending him, he deserves the consequence he gets for his actions but to say he did it for a laugh is disingenuous.

It's well documented that United have a problem that almost nobody improves after joining but many decline, even well established players. One of the biggest factors appears to be general attitude and discipline. Fans can sit around moaning about FFP, 115 charges, money money money but none of that is responsible for a bad attitude on the pitch, being unfit, looking like you don't care and generally being unprofessional

Money doesn't make you first to the ball. Attitude does.

Whether a kid or an experienced highly decorated pro, if a new player joins city they see the professional attitude of Haaland, KDB, Kompany, etc and they soon understand no matter who you are, you have to act like a pro and pull your weight. If they join United they see the attitude of Rashford, Pogba, etc, they see what they can get away with and it's bound to rub off on them.

So I'm baffled by some of the responses on here saying he's apologized, move on. What kind of message does that send to the rest of the squad ?

To suggest he did it because of mental illness, as the club is pretty much trying with that brief, is just as disingenuous.
