Rashford out partying at nightclub hours before reporting as too ill to attend training

"In football you need discipline on the pitch but also off the pitch - there is a line between. Every professional knows what is required. We have to focus on winning football games, that's all that matters. Every top professional knows what is required.

"The last two Premier League games, two goals and an assist - he is developing a strong bond with Rasmus Hojlund and we want to continue that process."

So, looks like ETH is going to start him tomorrow because winning games is all that matters!

Rashford, at the moment gives the overall impression of what my Grandma would have called a 'tortured soul'.

The club has a duty of care towards all employees and needs to sort out how it deals with what in Marcus's case might described, in playing terms at least, as a mid-career crisis. It's not as if United hasn't had examples of players going off the rails, boozing, disappearing, not turning up, etc.etc.going back to George Best (and others probably before him) and others who came after.
Sitting them on the 'naughty step', fining them, dropping them from the squad, even taking them out of harms way altogether, can work, but not always (e.g. Sancho). Lets hope INEOS brings some much needed expertise in this area.

RoShaun crashed down the leagues and now plays in fecking Larne. If Rashford cannot see how mental that is they he deserves everything that will come to him.

Don't forget Antony's case at the start of the season. It's madness.
And Maguire apparently still having to deal with Greek authorities.

You do wonder how much other stuff goes on that we just don't hear about in other clubs. Or whether we're just the only ones hit by this amount of shit.

I think the amount of off field shit ETH has had to cope with is genuinely unprecedented. We do hear about similar drama at other clubs (Partey at Arsenal, the Chelsea lad who beat up his cat) but I can’t ever remember a cluster of events like this, all at one club, over such a short period of time.

My argument is not that Rashford is the lynchpin that will lead us to the promised land, but until we can find two or three players that can match or better his output selling him is insane.
Need to sell him to get rid of his attitude.

No player should be bigger than the club, we've sold far better players than him and survived.

He was dropped, potentially fined and apologised. He is now back in contention to play.

This response is at the very least comparable to numerous examples with other players over the last 50 years.

Why are we still talking about it in so much detail??

because this isn't a one off incident and his form is absolutely shite

So who's he dropping to bring sir rashy back in then?

There is a difference between compulsive offender and occasional offender. I know he is being paid a lot and expectations are high. But at the end he is also a human being and we all could make a wrong call on a wrong day. He is obviously punished and that's it. If he becomes habitual of such behaviour then it's a different matter. I don't think he is that kind of a guy, yet.

Having said that, professionally I don't think he is good or consistent. He can be a great sub but not a starter for a club like United.

So who's he dropping to bring sir rashy back in then?

Nobody. There isn't a chance he starts against Wolves. You have to question ten hag if he starts him after this when he dropped him for being 5 minutes late to a team meeting.

Second time in three months, plus he’s been absolutely dog shit all season. There’s a whole culture of this at the club, it’s worth talking about. This is the sort of thing that should happen once and never again, not repeatedly.

Ten Hag's been playing "save my job" football ever since chucking McT on worked with him scoring two goals in injury time.

He does feel like he's that scenario people talk about sometimes where they say - "Put X in Y team and they'll easily score 15-20 goals a season". He's scored a lot for us but he's also been around for ages and basically plays every single game.

This makes no sense though when talking about Rashford. That’s said when you are talking about a player moving from a low scoring team to a team who creates loads of chances and scores lots of goals. Think Sterling at City as an example.

Rashford has played for a United team which has generally been disfunctional and, even when it hasn’t been, has been much better defensively than offensively. He also consistently outperforms the other attacking players in our team.

The reality is that if we put Rashford in a fully functional team, he will generate lots of goals, on a consistent basis. We can see that happens whenever we manage to have short spells of looking like a coherent team.

For me its simple, we need to get to Europe next season. Imho the club will do everything to achieve this goal.
What happens in the summer is an opem matter.

I have a feeling that Rashford eothet has a serious mental problem and the club will help or his gone in the summer.

Throw in the uncertainty over ownership and a bunch of wasters on savage wages too that we just cant get rid of and a genuinely mental injury list.

God only knows the stress

We've been dysfunctional by SAF standards but we've still averaged at roughly the 3rd or 4th best team in the country.

Just read the Andy Mitten piece for the Athletic which is a good summary of the situation. It’s made me desperate for Rashford to come out with some fire in his belly and a response on the pitch.

Put in a few performances and see how quickly everything changes. I’d fecking love it, there’s nothing better than a comeback when you’re under it.

I hope so too, but he doesn’t tend to do this. If he’s so disconnected that he’s out til 3am in Belfast when he has training the next morning and a game at the weekend, I don’t see where he’s going to pull an all-star performance from.

The only reason for Rashford to start tomorrow is to give him a chance to show the boss and the fans that he does care and he might actually back up his words with actions. Can't see it working though.

Adversity is useful, even if it’s of your own making. To me (and I’m guessing everyone else watching) he hasn’t looked arsed this season, so the only way this can be positive is if he feels he has something to prove again. I’m not a mentality monster but when my brother in law bet me I couldn’t go 3 months without alcohol I went out and smashed 6 months to prove the fecker wrong (bit different I know).

Hopefully he see’s it as a challenge.

Just had a look at some stats., with regarding Rashford. ( Only concerns Premier League starts ) from season 2015 to present. In 9 seasons he has appeared in 195 games and scored 80 goals. So that gives him an average of 21.6 games per season together with and average of 8.8 goals per season. So looking at these stats., there is an argument that he has never been a prolific goal scorer. His assist rate does not appear high either, having recorded 41 assists over 9 seasons. In only 2 seasons has he been what you might call prolific, they were 2019/2020 when he played 31 games scored 17 goals and had 7 assists, season 2022/23 when he played 32 games, scored 17 goals and recorded 5 assists.
Source used was the ESPN web site.

While being completely disappointed with Rashford, I am not surprised to see the journos rubbing it in as if it is the end of the world. After being forced to post positive stuff from INEOS for weeks, they would have been itching to have a go at the club, the manager and players.

This has happened multiple times already this season though. Either from being dropped, or otherwise criticised. Each time I’ve expected him to play like he has a point to prove. Each time we’ve seen almost the exact opposite. It’s almost the weirdest thing about his season so far.

"Hey boss I am ill so no train. Best regards"

"I'll make it up by having you overlook the others who did though, by volunteering myself to travel to Wales and play in the game I was supposed to be training for."

If he plays today and strolls around he‘s done for me. It‘s not worth keeping deadwood around in the hope they get their shit together. Take the loss and get winners in instead.

I will literally hope he can do it every single time it happens until he’s not a United player anymore.

I honestly believe its the culmination of a decade of Ed's "Disneyland" vision coming home to roost. Hence "discipline/professionalism" aspect is such a huge issue with this lot. Pampered, spoilt, entitled lot which we've built our squads around post SAF.

It might depend on how Rashford responded to being dropped for the FA Cup game (if the story is true that he asked to attend and Ten Hag told him no, and the club cooked up the illness excuse at the time).

Either way, if Rashford has accepted he's been unprofessional and taken the fine without causing a fuss then I don't see why he wouldn't be an option for the next game. He's had his wrist slapped and Ten Hag has already shown his authority. I don't think he needs to rock the boat any further because his point has been made.

Only once in the past 9 seasons have we been top 4 on goals scored in the league (the season we finished 2nd under Ole). We are currently 17th on goals scored in the league. Creating and finishing chances has been a consistent issue for us for a long time.

Now, I haven’t analysed the expected goals tallies for those seasons but I would be a bit surprised if they indicated that we actually create the chances and finishing them has been the main problem.

If anything, we have been a graveyard for attacking players. Look how Antony, Hojlund and Weghorst have all struggled. I’d agree with you if you said that there is bad recruitment but we are definitely not a team where players can come in and stat boost based on our amazing levels of chance creation from midfield.

I have hope that we might finally have some balance with a Cas-Mainoo-Bruno midfield and the Rash/Hoj/Nacho frontline, with Shaw and Martinez back as well. We will see how Rashford does if we do start to look a decent team again.

Think the amount of sponsors now, although good for income is also a distraction. If they all want a piece of the players then it can take their focus off their actual jobs. I know other teams have sponsors, but you wonder if they manage it better. We have always said about players doing extra work on the training field, but what if they actually can't because it is set aside for work with the sponsors.

I would let Rashy start and sub him if he didn‘t work his arse off. After ten minutes.

Got to get rid.

Hojlund, Antony and Garnacho are all tearing it up so it’s a tricky one I’m sure.

Garnacho was horrendous on Sunday but is still too dangerous to drop. Antony equally terrible but had a goal and an assist, so the optics of dropping him for the Tequila tippler would be pretty appalling, would send a horrible message to the players.

All three were very poor against a Div 2 side at the weekend. Antony is obviously the one to drop though.
