Rashford out partying at nightclub hours before reporting as too ill to attend training

But it's ok to have an opinion on someone else who dares to form an opinion?

That must be some comfortable fence you've found yourself again.

Many molehills will soon form a mountain, this isn't an isolated incident.
Honestly Nome, I'm just not that invested.... The hysteria, I don't get it most of the time. If that's a me thing I'm fine with it....

I don't see too much hysteria, I just see lots people sharing their opinion on the latest hot topic on a discussion forum about their clubs star player, who once again, has let himself and the club down. I thought that's why we're all here no?

I'm not sure what you really expect to see tbh, he has history and people are getting to the point of having enough, that isn't a hysterical reaction it's just the straw that broke the camels back.

We really are in a massive predicament with Rashford.

He's woefully inconsistent and season after season there is "something" internal that the club have to deal with.

He's immensely talented, a local boy, been in the first team squad for years. He should be the poster boy of the club - the star player. But he's in the peak of his career and looks like he's going to waste his talent.

At this point in his UTD career - he isn't offering anything near the level that he should. He's become more of a burden than an asset.

Getting him out the door has to be a priority come the summer. But i cant see where he would go. No top club would want him on his wages coupled with his erratic form. We might be stuck with him

It still makes me laugh that only two years ago he published a book called 'You are a Champion' which advised young kids about navigating challenges in life.

Admittedly I haven't read it but looking at the blurb you'd have to think Marcus could use some of his own advice right now...

It shows kids how to:
  • Be comfortable with who you are – you can't be a champion until you're happy being you!
  • Dream big
  • Practice like a champion
  • Get out of your comfort zone and learn from your mistakes
  • Navigate adversity in a positive way
  • Find your team
  • Use your voice and stand up for others
  • Never stop learning
The irony is just too obvious

Precisely.

Looking at the incident in isolation, I have to say that some of the criticism is indeed OTT and is made up of dubious speculation, and yes “venting” isn’t an altogether inappropriate label.

The Rashford defenders choose to view the incident out of context (why? Blind love for the player or disingenuous trolling?) and fail to acknowledge that it’s part of a bigger picture.

How is he playing it out in public? How is he feeding them a negative story? By simply saying it’s an internal matter? It’s not if Ten Hag sent out a memo here stating that Rashford was out clubbing two nights in a row.

Everyone is well aware of the situation. Stating it’s an internal matter to the press it he least of our concerns. What was the alternative? «No comment»? It’s not as if the information isn’t already out there.

Were you as negative when Fergie openly stated he didn’t include Gibson, Rooney and Evans in the squad because they went on a night out?

The media will continue to play it out in the public because he's all but confirmed their story.

The alternative was obviously repeating the clubs official reason for his absence, he's ill, that's it. If as the club said he's simply ill then that isn't an internal matter that needs to be dealt with.

Jesus christ what a silly thing to blame him for.

He has to answer the question - saying its an internal matter is the least controversial thing that could have come out of his mouth.
Not even answer the question, but questions in plural.

The poster you replied to was replying to a poster who wrote the following: From Ten Hag: “He reported ill”, “"It's an internal matter. I will deal with it.”

To be fair, it is slightly ingenious to write it like that, as this was not the scenario, and purposely makes ten Hag look like he's naive and blurting out random words.

But ten Hag did not blurt out those two sentences as one answer to a journalists question. He was replying to two different questions, and both answers can be true at the same time. It was professionally done, and smartly diverted all the attention and responsibility, as it should be, to Rashford.

Oh, and I will not be surprised to hear Carragher, and many other ABU journalists and pundits, blame ten Hag for this somehow the next chance he gets. I only mention Jamie in name because he is always, aways the quickest. I expect a Telegraph article from him on ten Hags failure to get the best out of "Rashy" shortly.

Literally go back a few pages and you'll see someone infer he's too old and another saying we should sell him. If he wasn't drunk, who cares?

He missed training and thus the match because he was out the night before and the night before that. That's all the evidence we have.

If you think it's acceptable to miss work because you got smashed for two nights before it then good luck keeping your job.

The media are not going to swallow 'he was sick' while that same media has footage of him partying. The only person that has confirmed that he wasn't sick is Rashford. If club says he's sick, Ten Hag echoes it and Rashford lays low then there's no story. But the minute Rashford pulls a sickie then allows himself to be filmed in a nightclub or whatever. How on earth is Ten Hag supposed to stick to the 'he was sick' line? Honestly in as much as he's made some media mistakes. This wasn't one of them. If Klopp or Guardiola were questioned about it and gave the same reply people would be praising their hard line (keep it in house) attitude. Ten Hag is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't .

Well that exactly what should have happened. But Ten Hag is still too naive in his dealings with the British media.

They can swallow whatever they want but the manager shouldn't be contradicting the clubs official stance.

*Remember the giddy excitement on the fresh-faced Mancunian in post-match interview when he scored against the Arse?

What happened to that lad?

*I've gone full Drury here. I apologise.

Tell me this is an ill player normally an internal matter that needs to be 'dealt with'?

Jesus Christ indeed. This isn't about having a dig at Ten Hag for the sake of it or protecting Rashford. It's about the manager of Manchester United contradicting the clubs official stance and feeding the media.

If it's truly an internal matter then that doesn't need to be said. By saying that publicly he's confirmed there's actually is a matter that needs dealing with. That's the opposite of dealing with it quietly and privately.

Time to move him on now. Brilliant player on his day but unfortunately in his early years he had players like Lingard, Pogba and Martial around him. Poor schooling from the outset.

Not to go all tin hat but I've noticed a lot of the Rashford defenders seem to be usernames I've never seen before on this forum.

Glad you said 'published' rather than wrote as anyone who thought he wrote a word of that book is deluded.

Same applies to his school meals campaign, I'm convinced it will come out in a few years he barely had anything to do with that and all his tweets to MPs were being written by his PR agency - from memory The Spectator or someone tried to do similar but there was a social media pile on as the whole story was so politicised at the time.

The state of our dressing room just makes me sympathise more with Ronaldo. Even though I thought (and still do) that he reacted at the time like an egotistical moron, I do understand his frustration having to work with these cretins.

Rashford seems to think he is on the same level of the greats like Ronaldo even though he isn't even in the same stratosphere in terms of dedication or achievement.

Who can blame him though since the idiots in charge of our club seem to think they should be paying him the salary they do.

You're aware that their are pictures of Rashford coming out of clubs over a period of a couple of nights, vaping and drinking and then the media have reported that he's "phoned in sick" in the next for training after partying until the early hours?

He's told the truth, which everyone knows, which is Rashford has phoned in sick for work and he's shown that that bullshit isn't going to fly at United. I'd much rather he sent our a strong message that the club and fans won't be made a joke of by Rashford.

Are people pretending to be thick here?

Its irrelevant whats in the media the manager of Man Utd shouldn't be contradicting the club and confirming a negative story about one of his players.

Well it's been flying for the entire 18 months he's been at the club. So instilling discipline in this group of players is maybe beyond ETH. And speaking about private club matters publicly isn't likely to have any positives for the club.

We dont even know when he’ll return and the state he will be in, its not as if he was rock solid to begin with either.
Ok but that goes for basically any player who gets injured. Point being Shaw isn’t an issue because a) he’s a good player and b) we have a decent amount of backup.

Priorities are quite clearly in other areas of the pitch.

Not sure ETH can dismiss it when it’s plastered all over the papers….by playing it down he will be accused of being too soft or of double standards.

Do agree though that under the new Ineos stewardship maybe we have a more formalised PR person do this type of media response and ETH can just divert this type of question there.

Trouble is every issue is blown up and ETH is spending time defending or responding to issues rather than focusing on football matters. Doesn’t help that everything seems to leak out at Utd.

Rashford needs to grow up and take responsibility - and apologise for his behaviour and for throwing the manager under the bus again. Everyone is growing very tired of him nowadays….

There were absolutely no issues at all in his first few seasons. They only started once the club had decided to make him the poster boy.

Proper teams (like Manchester United used to be) don’t have “the star player”; they have a few of them. Burdening Rashford with so much expectation has clearly done him no good.

At this point in his UTD career - he isn't offering anything near the level that he should. He's become more of a burden than an asset.

He showed fitful hints of a return to form in his last couple of games (assist v Wigan, good goal v Spurs). I reckon the best way forward is to punish him sufficiently to deter others, leave the incident in the past and look for a buyer in the summer. Finding one might not be easy, but let’s hope that our new overlords are going to transform our lamentable selling record as much as our signings.

I really don't think this is true.

This should be obvious to you.

He can't not say it's an internal matter. If he left it as illness, they would point him to evidence that he wasn't ill and force him to comment.

If he says its not illness theyl ask what it is, why the club line was initially that he was ill and why he was clubbing.

Remember the Athletic said they asked for a comment from the club and the club assured it was an illness. The Athletic then said that was bullshit in the same article.

The only way ten hag can walk out and keep a lid on it is by sticking to the club brief of illness umbrella and say the whole matter is internal.

Jesus. Really?!? Cast your mind back a couple of years…

Some of us are not as easily duped as you are. When one has such resources, it's not difficult to dupe the masses. Some of us see right through it and know better.

Rashford does not have one single plus point.

I don't know why it's a debate. Managers nowadays just say whatever PR people tell them to say. A PR guy told ETH to answer the question that way, it has nothing to do with him.

He could have just said he's ill and that's that.

Watch this from 2:20 onwards and tell me if you think he's handled it well and didnt give the vultures more to feed off?

And I agree we need better PR and Erik needs media coaching because as I say 18 months on he's still very naive in his dealings with the British media.

No excuses for Rashford I'm not trying to defend him at all. Now that the managers confirmed it yes he should be issuing a very public apology.

He's ill. Next Question. Simple.

An assurance which Erik contradicted, that's the problem.

Would be a terrible approach. You know it's not that simple, because the next question is "he's not ill, we have pictures of him at a nightclub the night before".

Which then opens him up. Him saying it's internal before they can push him is a far, far better way to go.

I thought Ten Hag's response was pretty good, and am unsure what the moaning is about.

He's made it clear that he's dealing with it, that he's not going to tell the press any more for now and to move on. The press already know what happened, so he's just stopping the conversation at what they already know and not adding to it.

Apparently Rashford is now at Carrington with his agent (his bother), having to discuss a separate issue, ie more than the 'illness'

The moaning is daft.

As though he can actually say illness alone when they have evidence to the contrary. He'd look like a mug.
