This isn't tricky, lads. Someone spoke to Matt Hughes at the Times. They may or may not have some sort of relationship to Rashford. He would generally have to get a second source to stand up the story before he'd print it, so someone else probably corroborated it. None of which tells us much about the story being true or otherwise. It just says there are possibly two people who want that story out there, for whatever reason(s).
Pilib de Bruin, I assume, upon hearing the story, went off and spoke to someone, who told him roughly the same story. He has plenty of media contacts. He may have spoken to one of them who gave him the nod that they'd heard the same. He, given that he doesn't operate under the same sorts of guidelines as the Times, can publish immediately. He may even have spoken to one of Matt Hughes' initial sources. Or, it could be a different person altogether. Either way, the story now has a couple of public sources ie Matt Hughes and de Bruin.
As for Mr. Mujac and jb talking to people around Rashford, that certainly makes me think the story didn't come from him. He wouldn't be the first footballer to have a story like that put around about him, by someone known to him, who subsequently backed away from it, though (albeit I don't think that's what happened here). It doesn't mean that Matt Hughes and Dr Bruin didn't hear it from someone they trust, though, which makes it fair game to report.
