Raphael Varane | Signed for United!

Why would City go in for him? Stones + Dias have proven that they're a great partnership and they still have Laporte, Ake etc. PSG are set with Ramos + Kimpembe, Bayern aren't spending a lot this year, Pool signed Konate (so no more CB signings), I assume Juve have bigger issues so they won't be in either and no one else from Italy / Germany can afford him.

That leaves

Spurs (actively targeting the same set of CBs as us: Kounde, Torres etc.)

Chelsea: They don't like Azpi as their 3rd CB (Rudiger + T. Silva are nailed on). The plan was to sign Hakimi and have Reece James as the 3rd CB but that didn't really happen. Maybe they'll go for another wing back.

I haven't seen any links from either of these clubs but the only real competition would be from Chelse
Chelsea seem to be the big competitor in this case. City, only if they sell Laporte, and there have been such rumours. PSG, would only be if they plan on transfer to 3 at the back or Marquinhos want to step up to DM.

2 possible transfers and I've not read "preparing a bid" once. Change is good sometimes

Has his stats for the last 2 seasons ever been posted? Be an interesting read

Varane isn't going to City to play second fiddle to Dias/ Stones and City isn't going to pay that much money for a backup option. They already have Ake for that.

Yes, Chelsea would be a threat and he would be an upgrade to Rudiger.

Interesting line in The Athletic's Sancho piece just posted by Whitwell, Ornstein and Honigstein:

"Still, United are not flush with cash. They have indicated there is no substantial money left for further deals, which casts doubts over a pursuit of Raphael Varane."

Hopefully no more than putting out the message that we won't be fleeced or pay over the odds for players. The absolute opposite of Ed's 'we can do things in the transfer market others can only dream of' approach.

I'm reading that the Sancho deal is €17m a year over five years so I find it hard to believe there is no money left in the bank. Also consider Sancho was a target last year.

250k for him, 250k for Sancho and the potential renewal of Pogba. Wages are going to sky rocket.
.
i'm not convinced that Pogba will still be a united player at the end of the summer

Varane and Sancho would be a brilliant start to the window. Why would Varane take a pay cut when he knows he can leave Madrid and probably get paid more at United and have a new experience?

Hope we do a group unveiling/presser with Sancho, Varane and Tom Heaton all taking a picture together with Ole.

If Real cant afford to offer him a raise at the age of 28 because of their bleak finances then it's pretty much a done deal already.

No player of that stature would accept anything less.

We already saved a lot by offloading Sanchez and Lukaku last year.

Add to that - we will probably save £200-300.000 in players leaving this summer. I am convinced 2-3 established players will leave

Judging by how hard the media are going in on this now, we’re going to look like a right bunch of twats if we didn’t get him. I hope this now highly publicised pursuit is because hes already given his word that he’ll join.

DDG is on £400k and Pogba on £300K. Move those and we have enough money to pay wages to Sancho, Varane and Camavinga.

Then we have Mata, Romero, Lingard, etc who can be moved for some incremental cost savings.

Would guess 300-350 for Varane.
He's on less than 200k at Real, we're not going to give him over a 150k wage hike unless we move de Gea or Pogba on. We're not PSG or City, our resources are finite and we're simply not going to cripple ourselves by offering every Tom, Dick and Harry upwards of 300k a week.

See, that Ancelotti tweet has me wary on this.

If all it would take is for Ancelotti to give him the assurances that he's in his plans (and let's be honest here, why wouldn't he be?) then he'll be staying at Madrid.

Its known that Varane did not like working with Ancelotti the first time the latter was at Real.

Do Madrid have in house replacements for Varane and Ramos?
Nacho and Militão did solid jobs filling in last season and the former just got extended for 3 years but they also added Alaba and are reportedly looking at adding another CB this window
