Where are all the people who were making insane posts about him in July?
I was quoted on either this thread or another when I said he was obv better than Maguire and still class, they told me I was living in the past. Nowhere to be found now, of course. The words spineless and idiotic spring to mind.

Brilliant defender and leader. He’s been our best player this season.

Brilliant today, even his passing out was top class.

Long may it continue...

When he’s fit he’s the best in the league.
I never appreciated that Madrid side but feck me they had class, quality and outrageous talent from 1 to 11

I think many didn't appreciate those Madrid sides just because they didn't play like the Barca teams with the same level of 90 min dominance. But they always had the same level of quality as Barca, and were glorious to watch in their own way especially when Bale and Isco were fit along side Ronaldo and Benzema.

Probably the best club side ever really.

Casillas, Marcelo, Ramos, Varane, Carvajal, Casemiro, Kroos, Modric, Bale, Ronaldo, Benzema.

Not 1 weakness anywhere in that 11. Mad team.

To be fair Casillas wasn't really a part of it.

Unrelated to the thread, but pretty sure Casillas wasn’t their GK.

God help us if/when he gets injured. Our best player by a mile.

The most unappreciated part of his game is his speed, just wait until he is at peak match fitness. There was a period of time where he would’ve been the fastest centre back in the world.

This is still only him at 80% too. Ridiculously good player.

He’s absolutely colossal at the moment. Sadly, the drop off from him to Maguire or Lindelof is like the Grand Canyon
Something like less than a goal a game when he plays and 2.5 goals a game when he doesn't.

I've had people try to explain this away a few weeks ago. There is no explaining it away. He was far and away our best defender, and now he has some competition.

Very eqrly days, but Raphael and Lisandro seems to complement each other very well, in a way we’ve not seen in ten years. Martinez is very proactive in his positioning, and Varane seems much more assured when he goes compared to last year. So far we’ve not missed aerial protection either. They’ve been among the best on the pitch three games in a row.

Maguire-in-ers and Varane-out-ers tend to focus on those "tackles per game stats" "interceptions per game stats" (which some of our fans or maybe our scouts/coaches probably pay attention to) which Varane doesn't excel at and Maguire does well on.

Those "tackles per game stats" "interceptions per game stats" are extremely misleading since your those numbers get inflated if your team is constantly under pressure (which may be the fault of the CB who randomly boots the ball forward ) and if you stuff the space well, the attacker may not bother pass the ball into the box/attempt to dribble past you and you will lose one "tackle" or "interception"

Asking once again, can we make this guy captain instead? World Cup winner, multiple Champions League winner, the pedigree is there. Bruno absolutely doesn't deserve it when his whole game is so erratic all the time.

Needs to stay fit…..

Yeah, I'd rather us risk the occasional Maguire game then run him into the ground. Need 30 starts from him in the league to have a chance at top 4.

Just leave him out of the domestic cups. We need him for all league games

I think even that might be too much and we should probably leave him out for the occasional Bournemouth away or an easier home game.

We really can't afford to lose him for a few months.

Wonder where are all the posters who said "past his best", "there is a reason why Madrid did him" and more bs.

Last season also he started very well and then for injured, he was poor only in the last few games when entire squad just have up. They was clear difference in how we defended with and without Varane.

Those posters are not fans of this club. They only revel in negativity and expect 100% dominance every game. We seriously need to do a filter to see which posters only post negatively and temporarily ban them.

Our good run of form and multiple clean sheets is on him and him alone. Not Martinez, not Dalot, not Malacia, not De Gea.
I love how he is such an unassuming character, just does his job and get on with it. No fks given.

Been brilliant this last few games, with the air of a man just taking care of business, no drama. Last night him and Martnez made the penalty area a dead zone, Leicester got nothing and most of their work was outside the area. Just hoping the injury problems of last year were a one off, because on this form our defense can be a real platform for the season.

Everything he does he does so elegant. There was one distance where Lisandro lost the ball and Leicester might have been in a dangerous position but Varane just popped out and cut their pass like there's nothing to it. His reading of the game is fantastic and when you read the game so good it's half of your defensive work. Reminds me of Rio in that regard.
