In saying that players like Lingard, Martial and Matic would be superb signings for Newcastle- they'd probably even pay a 3 or 4m loan fee for Jesse based on what he did for West Ham last year

Getting them off the wage bill is most important. Jones, Mata, Lingard, Pogba, Matic, Martial, and possibly a few more, and we could bring a couple of players in. If we are fighting for that 4th place it will help us.

I fully agree with you. However Rashford is local, he's an academy product, and the way he is out in the public eye means he will stay at this club for his entire playing career. There will be nothing but scrunity and constant question marks if we decided to get rid of him, and they'll hang it over us all the time, even if it was the right decision. Only way i see he leaves is if he causes a storm and tries to get out himself

Martial won't be allowed to leave in January, it's very difficult to find a replacement in the winter window.
We obviously need a midfielder, but there's not many available. I can't see much happening with Lingard, Pog etc. Not when they're so close to being free agents.
Hopefully we can bring a CM in to sure up that midfield. (Fingers crossed)

Martial has barely played 350 odd minutes this season and scored 1 goal. He will be hardly missed. Amad/elanga could easily cover for him.
If he goes, he opens up space for a replacement - hopefully a center mid.
Think a lot depends on the nature of Ralf's position at the club after the summer. If his role includes transfer dealing I can see some transfers in January. If not they will be better off saving the funds for the next manager imo.
Amad will go out on loan. Elanga will be introduced slowly as he is being.
Martial although hasn't played much recently is still an established 1st team player. He won't be allowed to leave unless we have a replacement for him in the squad. In my opinion.
We don't need to sell to buy & if there is a suitable midfielder available it's likely we'll attempt to bring them in. It's just finding a man suitable & available.
do we need one for Martial in Jan. Between Greenwood, Sancho and Rashford, we could cover the positions that Martial would cover ie left wing and centre forward. If we got a good offer in Jan, I don't think the club would turn it down.
I think we do, yes said playes can play in those positions Martial plays but we need to keep depth in the squad, there's lots of games coming thick & fast, injuries to one or two and we'd be left short.
I do agree IF a good offer came in Jan we'd accept BUT is anyone going to make a healthy offer for a player who's struggling in recent times & is currently injured? I'm not sure. Plus I think we would want to have a replacement lined up. Don't forget January can be a difficult window.

Joking apart in the last game he played which I think was Villareal, I was very surprised to see him pressing and his movements were really positive. Especially first half. So he can do it. He's just lazy!
Rangnick was presumably looking at players for Lokomotiv the last 6 months and they seem to top out around 6-7M signings, so maybe there's a deeper midfielder for 10-15M he rates that we can bring in for January. If Lingard, Pogba and Matic leave in January or at the end of the season and VDB ends up with the higher 2 we could arguably do with 2 players there anyways with Covid meaning slightly bigger squads, we'd have decent balance like this :
2 Attacking - Bruno, Sancho, VDB and 1 of Mejbri or Amad with the other on loan
2 Deeper - Big Fancy Summer Signing (Rice/Tchouameni), Fred, Cheaper January Guy, McTominay

By listing Fred twice you must think he's atrocious. When in fact he's been our best player under Rangnick.
After spending on Sancho, Varane and Ronaldo you can be sure that Martial is gone the moment Newcastle show us the money. We badly need a midfielder, it's January, they need a competent striker and he reportedly wants out so a deal is easier to do.
As for his replacement, we don't really need one as the squad is top heavy and we have Sancho/Rashford who can play LW and Cavani/Greenwood who can play the striker role. We don't even need to replace him as we have five players, established first team players at that, who can cover the two positions he plays.
It would be a poor decision to hold on to Martial and fail to fund the signing of the midfielder we really need when he is never going to play much anyway.

I think if Omicron continues to impact the league so strongly and the league continues, we'll be less likely to sell as many players. A big squad may be essential to compete.

Yeah, I would be surprised if Rangnick isn't desperate to get another deeper midfielder in as soon as January. It would be surprising if he looks at McTominay as a starter and he doesn't seem to have immediately looked at VDB as a starter there either.
Yes, especially with the way COVID is raging, if one of McFred is out for a week or two, we're fecked.
Yeah sure if Newcastle come up with a good fee in Jan I'd expect us to sell him. Especially if he wants to leave. But we don't need the money to be able to fund bringing in a midfielder.
I would also say that we DO need to replace him. For reasons I've already stated above. Plus Cavani is gone at the end of the season too or even sooner if you believe the current Barca gossip, so if we didn't replace Martial in Jan we will in the summer (if he leaves in Jan that is) 100%.
& I'll just reiterate again, we do not need to sell to buy. So Martial staying in Jan or not should not impact on us purchasing another football player.

Personally i'd rather keep Armad over Elanga, I think the former has much higher potential and is ready for the first team. This gives us Ronaldo, Rashford, Greenwood, Cavani (he isn't being allowed to leave in Jan and he's not the type to push for it) for the front two. And then Bruno, Sancho, Amad and VDB for the two 10 spots. Martial even if he doesn't get the transfer he wants isn't going to be given minutes knowing that he's out the door. Hopefully we can ship him and Lingard out.

Yeah with developments regarding Cavani I agree we will need a replacement, my initial post was premised on Cavani staying.
Not if hes dropped he wont. We should pick players for the benefit of the team, not because hes local and an hero to the single mothers and I cant see his ego letting him sit on the bench for too many matches either. He will want to move on in this scenario.
I highly doubt we're going to see anything in January. We spent a lot in the summer, especially with wages. You have to consider the hit to our finances through Covid and ongoing uncertainty around postponements.
Throw in how hard it is to get the quality you need in January and I fully expect a quiet window. Even if we sell a couple that will really only represent a balancing of the books that was probably intended for the summer but a few of them were hard to shift.

I think some need to be reminded our current manager is only an interim appointment so do not expect the club to bring anyone in until there is a permanent manager in place.
I will be happy if Ralf gets the team playing his high tempo game and gets rid of the crap out of the squad and gives the youth a chance for the rest of the season.

I don't really see why Rangnick would wait to bring in a DM. If you figure we need 2 players for each spot (especially with Covid) we really only have Fred and McTominay for the 2 midfield spots.
We're in a battle for the final CL spot with Arsenal, West Ham, Spurs and possibly Leicester and you'd figure Rangnick needs a CL Semi-final berth or that 4th spot to consolidate his power at the club, either to extend his managership for another year or a front office spot and the ability to seriously influence or outright pick the next manager.
Covid makes signing players tough, but some team out there with a CM will be hurting for money.
I could see Renato Sanches. He'd fit in terms of high mobility in the deeper 2 spots and he's apparently itching for a move.

Sir Alex always said that you have to find the right characters and personalities to be Manchester United players. Some players look good at other clubs but buckle under the pressure at playing infront of Old Trafford and 75 thousand people week in and week out. Finding a Manchester United player is a completely different kettle of fish. I'm not sure if Rangnick understands that playing for the Red Bull Leipzig or Saltzburg are completely different to playing for Manchester United. He probably thinks if they can turn into great players for the Red Bull teams they can do the same for Manchester United
That's why Fergie and the club always looked at a players background, upbringing etc first. I'm not sure Manchester United do that anymore. Hence all the waste of money United have wasted the past 10 years (and probably why United haven't won big trophies the last 10 years as we don't have enough winners and have a lot of bottlers even our Captain Maguire isn't a winner).. even Fergie made a few transfer mistakes but generally got it right. He even rejected a few great players at other clubs (that the fans wanted him to sign) that turned into the right decision once they moved to a big club they flopped.
