Benfica star Ramires chooses Chelsea over Manchester City - Transfers - ESPN Soccernet

Benfica star Ramires chooses Chelsea over Man City

Benfica midfielder Ramires will join Chelsea next week in a £20 million deal, according to ESPNsoccernet sources.

Carlo Ancelotti wants the defensive midfield player having lost two experienced stars this summer in Joe Cole and Michael Ballack. Deco is expected to follow with only Liverpool's Yossi Benayoun coming in so far.

Ramires is now heading for Stamford Bridge with the deal virtually done and expected to be finalised in the next few days.

Ramires, 23, was one of the big successes of Brazil's World Cup campaign as they reached the quarter-finals in South Africa. Dunga, who was ousted as coach after the country's exit, stressed that Ramires was badly missed after suspension ruled him out of the 2-1 defeat by Netherlands.

Ramires is also wanted by Manchester City, who are ready to outbid Chelsea, but a source said: "He has opted to go to Chelsea, and the deal can be done in the next couple of days, certainly by next week."

Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira has met with intermediaries representing both Chelsea and Manchester City, but the player has chosen to move to the reigning Premier League champions. Bayern Munich and Barcelona have also been linked with the player but the two English clubs have the financial resources to make the deal happen.

Ramires said recently: "My agent has told me that a number of clubs are interested in signing me, but this didn't surprise me. We all know that the World Cup is the perfect stage to prove your worth.

"One good game could be enough to attract the interest of a big club. I don't know the names of the clubs that are after me, but it would be a dream for me to play for a big club such as Barcelona, Real Madrid or Chelsea."

Gives them options in the squad and more youth, makes sense. Not really seen anything £20m worth from him though, he was played out of position most of the time for Brazil when I saw him, but still...it's a lot of money.

He's a completely different type of player to Essien :wenger:

Not necessarily, he's supposed to be an energetic box to box midfielder who puts a foot in, even though he's been played as something of a withdrawn winger for Brazil.

Just makes you think really. If Anderson hadnt got injured and went to the world cup, would 1 start suddenly make him worth £25-30 million?

He wasn't really in Dunga's mind for the Brazil squad was he, even when fit?

But, yeah I think if he had 1 good game for Brazil at the WC - his price would jump up, the potential is there for the boy and those that have that kind of money to over spend - probably would do just that.

20m for Ramires? World has gone mad! I don't think he's hat good, at least not better than what they have.

20 million for a player doesnt necessarily mean you are that good anymore

No one thinking that he's a bit lightweight for the Premier league?

Well he was being played in his position that he plays at United as a central midfielder, way before Ramires even got his debut.

And for Brazil Ramires had constantly been used in Elano's role on the right, not in his real central midfield role.

Its all very silly to suddenly have his stock so high after 1 game at the world cup no matter who the player.

if your going to spend 20 million i can think of a few better ways

why not go the extra mile and get a de rossi?

I'd like to think that a professional football club like Chelsea don't make signings based on a couple of WC games, particularly not for 20 million pounds. Does anybody watch the Portuguese league regularly?

Absolutely nobody had him down as a £20 million midfielder before his one game in the world cup. Benfica had a good season but thats close to what Real paid for Di Maria.

I bet Carlo thinks he can make him into a Maka

This might seem too obvious, but it really seems to me that this reflects the fact that Ancelotti is an inexperienced PL manager. You'd hope he knows what he's doing spending sums that large but I've a feeling that this is another example of a foreign manager signing an expensive foreigner destined to fail to live up to his price tag on the PL.

I thought Chelsea were cutting back on spending anyway? Can anyone convince me that this is really better for all concerned than spending 20m on developing local young talent?

It's not the worst deal in the world, plus Benfica aren't the easiest club to deal with.

Chelsea don't worry about price tags anyway but Ramires will probably used to fill in the void left by those that have left in the hope he'll be better than them.

They should have got Yaya Toure basically.

Yaya Toure's 4 years older though, which would go against the main motives of this move - youth and long-term value.

It's a bit pricey but he's only just turned 23, he'd going to be able to give them cover in multiple areas and I'd be surprised if he didn't show himself to be Chelsea quality.

Chelsea have seemingly being tracking him since he left Cruzeiro where he apparently had a lot of praise, and he has done well for Brazil out of position, so I think you're being a bit harsh. They didn't just see him come out of nowhere in this WC, they certainly didn't decide to spend big money on him mainly because of that one game. It might've been a factor, but I don't see why you'd assume it's a particularly big one.

That is if it's even true, there's loads of bollocks transfer stories that come from ESPN.

Its the price tag. There's absolutely no chance Chelsea, or anyone, would have paid it before that one match. I know a couple of Benfica fans and even they didnt think they'd get so much for him before the match. But then he had his "Hargreaves" match and the price ballooned accordingly. Dont get me wrong, I rated him before the world cup. I can remember defending him a couple of times when you yourself were suggesting he's not very good Brwned in some of his matches for Brazil. But basically he's shot up £4-5 million after 1 match.

If he adapts to the premier league he could be an excellent addition to the Chelsea midfield.
