The best thing about this, is due to him carrying on as a consultant we can hopefully buy in the January window. If we had brought in day a Valverde and he wanted x player we may not have supported him. However Ragnick is now looking at the club long term.

I'm in the same boat. Would get behind both and think they're the two best options. Both have potential drawbacks but hopefully somebody like Rangnick can also help steer us to the right choice.

If he's going to be used for consultancy, presumably that'd mean he'll have input into our next manager. If he's as knowledgeable as many United fans in here, that'd surely mean he advises we hire Ten Hag?

No. He'll stay on as technical director or something for two seasons after the interim post. This is good.
If by some miracle a "Di Matteo" happens, imo - no. Ten Hag should be our main goal. Ragnick is fine as an interim, but he is on the verge of retirement. Let him work with Murtough on our club set-up and leave a young progressive manager in charge.
Forget the 6 months stint, its the 2 years consultency whilst being able to make crucial and important club decisions that we should be excited about, not only is everyone going to learn from him, but he can help restructure the football side of this club just as he has done with say RB Leipzig, and get us functioning properly from board to pitch, FINALLY, only many years to late but better late than never i guess. The Murtough effect.

This is an assumption but I don't think Rangnick wants to manage a club long term. He had a burnout at Schalke and took some distance from the touchlines.
The key point (I think) is that if you just wanted someone to do a short-term job as interim manager then there were more obvious choices linked to us with better CVs as actual managers.
So while he wanted the consultancy role, there's no reason for us to give it to him unless we're actually interested in listening to him and building on his ideas. Because he isn't so good an actual manager that you'd reluctantly accept giving him that consultancy role just to have him manage the team for 6 months.
And if our DOF & Technical Director were behind this decision, it would be a positive in itself that they are happy to bring in new people with ideas on how to do things better.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but Ten Hag philosophy is that of also intense pressing. And there are not really any German perspective coaches at the moment. Klopp is at Liveprool, Tuchel at Chelsea and Nagelsmann at Bayern. No other coach has United-tier credentials to take over the job. Ten Hag fits the philosophy of gegenpressing as much as anybody. He's also Dutch, so it's close enough ; )
This is why I find it hilarious that people think he's more ten Hag than Pochettino.
