Ralf Rangnick | ex-interim manager | does anyone rate him?

So another manager who is shit? No.

it’s blatantly obvious now this group of players have a seriously shit mentality. Some of these players have had 4/5 managers at Utd now. We can’t keep blaming the manager. The attitude of some of these players is shocking.
Who are some of these players? Otherwise you are just parroting what you thought Shaw was saying. By the way, we beat Wolves away earlier this season with the same group of players, but we weren't convincing enough and did not dominate games. A proper manager with actual tactics should be improving us.

Nothing he talks about asking for from the players manifests itself on the pitch.

Ditch the 2 striker system. They are all me-oriented. I don't know how we ended up with a logjam of these types at the forward position. Good luck Ten Haag or whoever.

Actually I'm confused. He says he want control in the midfield but we don't have the players to do it. He has always been known for his high pressing tactics but we aren't seeing anything from the team. He says, we will look for quick vertical passes to the forwards but then except for one or two occasions, I saw nothing today. If you are playing quick vertical passes ,you need someone who can hold the ball and another one to run behind. Cavani and Ronaldo isn't exactly a combo like that.no idea why Rashford or Elanga isn't playing.

It is really fecking weird how we dont press, not even in the first few minutes at home, it's just some token closing down but nothing like what we need. There's no energy or cohesion yet he clearly wants it from his interviews.
Because pressing requires a coordinated team effort and not just random closing down as you said, and that requires a high level of understanding of the system. Each player needs to know exactly where to go and where to stand. Maybe in time he'll get his ideas across, but right now he's learning a hard lesson in the toughest league in the world.

He basically said we didn't have enough aggression and intensity to defend. I have no idea why isn't Fred playing them. He needs control and so understand why Matic is playing . But play Fred as well and ditch this 4222. We are being found out in every single game. We done have the forwards to play 4222 RBL game.

If he wants to stick to 4222, ditch one of Ronaldo or Cavani and bring a proper forward.
Fred has long covid apparently and has been struggling since.

So am I to understand from this that the players at Man Utd are so shit, that this is the only way they can play? This underwhelming, errorridden, lazy, f off way?

At this point, I have to wonder if we'll ever be a proper football club. I am seriously stuck for answers.

It seems that no one can come in and make the hard decisions. Why are the same players given chance after chance and the same players being ignored.

There's a rot there that goes deeper than I thought.

We could... Against bigger teams. Those bigger teams figured it out. It took a mistake to score against Chelsea, but rest of the game we were dominated. Liverpool and City dominated us and we had no chance to counter. Counter attacks worked last season but this year it's not gonna.
Not talking about this season. Ole did not sit back this year.

I'm not saying it would guarantee success... but if this guy has been given a permanent contract atleast the players would know they have to put in a shift to have a job at the club.

This 6 month interim bollocks still has our players running around like they're troubled that someone asks them to defend.

It's a dead squad full of weak mentalities.

Conte was the one that would've broke these bastards wills into playing hard.

You have no idea why Rashford isn't playing? Really?

I’m not writing RR off, I kinda hope he stays next season too - but I haven’t seen any great tactical improvement, I haven’t seen any vast improvement in work rate and we haven’t really seen a new manager bounce. Hope he gets some backing in the Jan window or the end of the season will be miserable.

He seemed confused when we were being overrun in midfield with two strikers up front with a combined age of 70 plus.

That's worrying he couldn't work that one out.

see, this is what annoys me. He's an interim manager, his job should be to get immediate results, not stubbornly stick to somethign that isn't working. If the next manager comes in and changes everything, that's his prerogative.

To be honest I didn't mind him coming in and trying his 4222 and gegenpressing if it worked with this squad, great. But if not (and it obviously hasn't) he should then adapt to what suits the squad to get results as this isn't his team long term he's here for a new manager bounce and to get into the top 4. He's not here to overhaul the team/squad/style of play though I don't know if he realizes that.

Why "Prove" yourself when you have lots of Football men in the game singing his praises from the rooftops.

One of Klopp and Tuchel said that they should be worried (a half serious joke) now Ralf has come in.

I'd rather listen to them than the Man Utd online fanbase to be honest.
Opposition managers rarely have a bad word to say about their counterparts unless they have personal animosity towards each other. Fergie even started waxing lyrical about Wenger as soon as he stopped becoming a threat.

Of course they were gonna feed the narrative and tell everybody what they wanted to hear.

RR got the job and realised that he actually likes being at a big club and therefore doesnt want to piss the Glazers off.
If he doesnt finish top 4 he certainly will piss the glazers off

He is i feel trying to accomodate all these attackers we have. We have too many forward players, that can only be shoehorned into the team playing this formation. Ronaldo, Cavani, Rashford, Sancho, Greenwood, Bruno, VDB, Elanga, Amad, Martial. We need to sell two or three and buy some MFs.

We will see if we play the same formation or players next game. I think he has to change. To do that he must sarcrifice some of the attackers.

You could still play four of them with a 4-2-3-1. But the 10 in that formation doubles as a Mf and an attacker, ergo Bruno.

The likes of Pep and other top coaches have sung the praises of Marcelo Bielsa too. Arguably more so than for Rangnick. And yet he's not been successful at the elite level.

My point is that it's not as clear cut as you make it out to be.

What's even more worrying is after already missing out on a great manager in conte, we are going down the route now with a set up under ragnick that is leading towards a scenario where ten hag will not be a good fit to follow on from ragnick and once again screwing up another big missed opportunity to get a top manager in their prime.

To me it seems like our path is quite clearly marked out. The Board never really wanted Ole gone but to save face got rid. And yet Phelan and Fletcher are still here?

With Rangnick moving "upstairs" in the summer I think its looking fairly obvious that he will take Darren Fletcher's job and Fletcher will take the reigns - meaning the Board don't need to make any management decision and the Oleball era can continue. Fletcher is currently learning that Ole style under Rangnick and Ralf just needs to see out 5 months.
You've got it all figured out. Good on you.

I don’t see any of what he talks about in interviews being implemented on the pitch. I know the players are to be blamed but this guy seems to talk well without being able to implement his ideas so far.

Has anyone in the press asked him about how we were able to press capably in his first game in-charge and then we regressed so hard ever since? We considerably stopped pressing over the last few games and he needs to be able to explain it.

Maybe he's finding it impossible to implement with players like Ronaldo, Matic etc

Either way I hope we're on the lookout of a permanent manager. The next big mistake I can see us making is waiting and watching while our managerial targets get snapped up and sticking to this guy who said he may suggest 1.5 years as manager. Please no.

But while he is here he needs to be ruthless and play whoever fits the system and the club need to be fine with it. No point in him bleating on about tactics and us looking as useless as ever on the pitch.

It’s not surprising though. He hasn’t been a coach for a while and it shows. He knows about what he wants but is sort of struggling to get the players to do it while also not exposing other weaknesses.

we are in for a painful few months. And another reset in “philosophy” means we have no clue whether there is actual light at the end of the tunnel.

Well, if you conveniently ignore the Covid outbreak and the fact that he joined us only last month, you are probably right.

He needs to rotate the squad if he wants fresh minds and bodies. Or he has to tell the players that they can do it and they need to believe that they can play high intensity football every 3 days.

The two most worrying signs is how quick the pressing game seen against Palace disappeared, also the fact he is still persevering with the same failures under Ole

No disrespect to the situation, but that is very hard to sell when Spurs met similar problems early in Conte's tenure (including COVID). We also have to remember that Spurs started Conte's tenure quite worse than we were just before Ole left. In any case, lots of people need to start pulling their heads out of their arses at the moment.

Well, it's not like Ronaldo or Cavani is pulling trees up.

Ronaldo scores goals. Cavani scores as well, plays with intelligence, doesn't keep running into players, etc.

Rashford's brainless. He's like a very, very inconsistent Nani. And Nani was inconsistent.

What's funny is many were (rightly) calling for Rashford to be dropped. And he was.

You need to cotton on to the fact that the problem isn't the forwards anyway.

This is my biggest issue with him. Like, how are you going to ask the likes of McKenna to stay, pick similar personnel, etc. and expect different results? It's baffling.

If he can somehow convince the board to get rid of a lot of these players, I will be happy.
My biggest concern is the total disconnect between how we know for a fact he likes and talks about the way his teams play and how we play. Half a dozen games in and we aren't seeing any of the principles in our style.
Another troubling thing no one can accurately pinpoint what is wrong. It seems everything is wrong.

Spot on this is the most troubling thing. We know what he wants and we know it's different to what we were seeing under Ole, yet he is making all the same decisions. Something doesn't add up. Mayne his heart isn't in it and he's really just here for the paycheck or he doesn't have the free reign we hoped for. Worrying times.

One thing is so sure. A system coach can never be successful at Man United, unless he gets to gut the whole team and bring 6-7 new players in. Let's be honest that it is never going to happen as our players are in huge wages and cannot be shipped off. It's in our best interest to bring in coaches like Allegri or Conte or even Potch and hoep they can bring something out of these players. Ralf or Ten Haag would struggle with our players.

I am convinced the players are just treating him like a supply teacher and no signs of it changing since Palace which is worrying

This is what I really don't understand. Like at least press for the first 5 minutes in a home game against Burnley and Wolves to show some token attempt at it but we don't even do that, from the first minute its just jogging around and half assed pressing. It doesn't make sense because Rangnick seems to be indicating in his comments that we're not pressing enough so how can they all just be ignoring what he wants so quickly.

Watching the games since he arrived, despite what he says in the press conferences to me it looks like the team is not being asked to press. Since the palace game we have pretty much dropped deep to defend with the only real pressing coming from opposition goal kicks.

Whenever the camera goes to Ralf he generally seems content on the side. Contrast that with conte, pep, klopp, tuchel etc if the team was not doing what he wanted surely we'd see him shouting at the team to get up the pitch qnd press. Maybe it is a tactical thing for those games, after all it was a quick turnaround of games and with the covid break, maybe the tactic was to be a bit more Conservative until he has actual training ground time with the team.

whilst I don't think the players are actively playing trash, its clear their confidence is low. Not sure trying to implement this 4 2 2 2 that is so similar to the 4 2 4 that Ole was playing is the right way to rebuild the players confidence.

I don't know why people didn't see this coming or thought Ole could just manage on the final year of his deal without an extension. The manager loses all authority once the players realize they are going to be around longer than him. The board would do well to put out a sourced story suggesting he will have a lot of power over footballing operations and player personnel even after the season.

I also don't understand how he started Ronaldo, Cavani and Matic on a short rest while preaching high intensity football. He's billed as being far too smart and innovative to not expect what he got in terms of effort level.
