Liverpool sell Sterling for say £45 million, they probably just spend it on Benteke, and Clyne, will that improve anything for them?

I think the gap between Sterling and Ibe/Markovic/Lallana is smaller than the gap between Benteke and Balotelli and the gap between Clyne and Johnson.

(I know that doesn't automatically translate to better performances, though).

If he wants out, and we can get £40m+ for him, then I'm all for it. At least it's not Coutinho (yet).

Pretty good position until you remember Sterling is your best player, and the great front 3 that gelled 2 years ago are in effect gone, bearing in mind Sturridge can't be counted upon.
And remembering your manager showed last season how little £20m can get you

Coutinho is our best player, but Sterling does run him close.

Sturridge can't be counted on, agreed.

And our transfer business last season was shoddy. I am of course saying this sale is a good thing based on our club doing some decent business that improves the squad in the immediacy. If we go out and buy more potential, I'll be annoyed.

I get what you're saying about the poor transfer policy in last few years, but I don't think clubs think like that, like 'oh we wasted money in the past lets never sign players again'. I think 40m is a good price for a player who doesn't want to play for you when that money can be reinvested. you may keep an unhappy player on 30k for two years but hes unlikely to form any partnerships that will get you back into top 4

£40m isn't a good price if teams are willing to pay more than that. I doubt City are done yet, it'd be stupid to sell now when there's clearly going to be another improved bid.

Not now he isn't, but he will be if he gives City the next 10 years of his career. Same with Rooney when we signed him.
Rooney was in a different stratosphere of talent when he broke through. You knew Rooney would be special, Sterling is touch and go.

Liverpool's posturing is truly  we all know sterling wants to leave, the more time goes by the less money you will be able to get for him. 40m is a very generous offer from city.

Sterling last two seasons were more impressive than anything Rooney did at Everton(but, also Rooney was only 18 when sold and Sterling is soon to turn 21).

That seems to be all you can attract these days. Well, that and squad players at big clubs.

He will probably never be worth £40m again, Liverpool are crazy not to sell... But they didn't know what to do with £80m so I cannot imagine they would know what to do with £40m.

I imagine they're the ones who leaked the report that City's £40m offer was a final one, it allows Liverpool to display themselves as being resolute in negotiations and unwilling to buckle to the pressure of a better side. Having said that, I don't think there's anything laughable about what they're doing. Their only concern is protecting the clubs interests and ensuring if Sterling does leave they get as much as they can for him.

They're right to turn it down, it's only mid June, the fact City were stupid enough to go in at 40 million so early gives Liverpool the hope that either they'll improve the offer or another club will, worst case scenario and there's no more offers Liverpool can always go back to them and offer him for the 40 they originally declined, if city want them that much, which their offer suggests they do then they'll sign him for the 40.

However this really does show how inflated the English players are. You can't really blame clubs for going for foreign talent. No wonder the national team is suffering. To think we got Depay for around 25 million and Liverpool are rejecting a 40 million offer from City for Sterling...

He'll be great for City.

Liverpool have really, really blown the opportunity to build on their title challenging season. Thank feck.

Coutinho would probably cost the same maybe even more. Sterling costs so much because of the money in English Football.

Difference is Coutinho is coming in off a very good season where as Sterling has had a poor season. Sterling has also made it known he wants to leave. If Coutinho had the season Sterling did last year and came out saying he wanted to leave with 2 years left on his contract he wouldn't be going for 40 million

It is not like there are any clubs that NEED to sign Sterling or else, so I agree they need to be careful or it could cost them money. Of course that risk could be offset if several clubs get involved.

Cant see arsenal dropping 40m on him, let alone more. We might but doubt they really want us to get involved. Chelsea could i guess, think its a bit unlikely tbh.
No foreign side will at that price, maybe liverpool would sell for less elsewhere but no one seems particularly interested anyway.

Not exactly swimming in options really are they.

Sterling's "poor season" is completely overstated. He looked good when not played as a CF or at Wingback.

He's gonna be a class buy. I really wish we could go for him but it seems very unlikely that Liverpool will sell to us.

Liverpool news: Raheem Sterling 'caught using laughing gas' again
Reports emerges alleging that Sterling has been pictured again inhaling nitrous oxide, only months after the last similar furore

Liverpool have declined to comment on fresh allegations that unsettled striker Raheem Sterling has again been inhaling laughing gas.

The 20-year-old England international, who on Wednesday was the subject of a £40 million bid from Manchester City – £10 million below the Anfield asking price – was warned in April by Liverpool about his responsibilities as a role model after he was caught on video at his home sniffing nitrous oxide from a balloon. Photographs also emerged at the same time which purported to show him smoking a shisha pipe.

The latest images are carried on the front and inside pages of the Sun under the headline '£50m? You're having a laughing gas.'

The inhalation of laughing gas – or hippy crack as it known – has become fashionable among young partygoers but doctors have warned it can potentially have harmful or even lethal consequences.

Despite Sterling's recent controversies, and his stated desire to move to a club with a greater chance of winning trophies Liverpool are desperate to hang on to one of the Premier League's outstanding talents and have already rebuffed an earlier offer from City. The Merseyside club insist they will not sell for below £50 million.

Probably the thought of staying another season at Liverpool that made him do it.

City will eventually get him for a couple of million more. Will be a good signing for them as he is a player who can open up the defense when they come against a defensive team.

He'll be great for City.

Many on here do not see us as rivals to United next season anyway, so City who I assume you DO see as rivals will surely just be stronger should they sign Sterling.

Got a feeling its the media more than anything calling it the 'final offer'. Makes the headlines even more sensational in a summer that's looking quite bland for transfers. What is the homegrown quota situation at City at the moment? Been reading that with Lampard, Milner, Boyata, Sinclair and Guidetti leaving you pretty much need to up that quota sharpish.

All players (bar Luiz, maybe) that cost more than the price tag on Sterling right now moved when they are at their prime and were all established world class players. This English tax and their ridiculous overestimation of how good their players are is getting abit clowny.

Anyone else not buy the suggestion from Liverpool fans that Coutinho is clearly their best player/ talent, over Sterling? Raheem's a much rarer talent, and has the potential to become so much more of a match-winner than Coutinho.

If the figures are correct Liverpool would be mad to turn them down.

Effectively they'd be getting around 40m and milner for him.

He'll be next to leave anyway. That will be the final nail in the coffin securing midtable level for decades. Bawaaaaa.

Sinclair and Guidetti leaving is not much of a problem, they haven't been in the squad for the past two seasons. Boyata was barely used so he can just be replaced with an academy player. Lampard can be replaced with Marcos Lopes and we'll definitely be signing an English player to replace Milner, whether that is Sterling, Delph, Barkley or someone else remains to be seen.

Dont really rate this guy that hard so hope City blow their load on him.

40 million on Sterling  Not worth more than 25.

Hopefully they lose Aguero to Madrid. Without him, they'll struggle, Sterling or no Sterling.

Nah, Sterling, Aguero and Silva all linking up will be very effective I think.

I think he could be disruptive in the dressing room, and a bit lazy. Its definitely not a scary signing put it that way, I;d be very comfortable about our chances of finishing above City if that was their main purchase this summer.
