He was truly awful. It was his sloppy passing early on that broke down several passing moves that set the tone for for a generally sloppy performance. 4/10 at best

Rio was awesome. I was worried about Pogrebniak before hand, but Rio never gave him a chance. Evans had a couple of jitters but otherwise pretty solid. Evra excellent

Sky even said "It must be the easiest job in the world playing full back behind Valencia". Well I wish someone would tell Rafael that. Awful

Welbeck was awful too btw (and Hernandez didnt improve things when he came on. Hope he gets back in the groove soon)

Clueless post, especially when you consider that Fergie picked out Rafael after the game as being one of our star performers (along with Evans and Valencia).

92% !!!! Where the hell did you get that from?? I'm stunned its more than 60%, and most of those were backwards, AND a fair few of those made the recipient adjust their position to receive it. It must include his throw ins. Rafael and Welbeck both misplaced/miscontrolled simple balls early on, so maybe I was looking for it. But I watched the whole match (as I always do) very intently, and I thought he had a stinker. He did improve in the second half, as they all did for a spell, but overall, still poor for me :nono:

I've said before that I think Rafael has a lot of very good attributes, but he's very careless with the ball and a lot of passing moves break down because of him. He frustrates the hell out of me

fecking hell what game did you watch

Rafael was good. His passing is one area I'd like to see him improve but last night it wasnt bad at all. Its just sometimes he gets the timing wrong when it comes to releasing the ball to Valencia or doesnt quite get the right contact on the ball before his off moving and making a run. Its not that he gives the ball away a lot, its just that when he does its often in a slightly frustrating way by being a bit careless with the way he tries to pass the ball and in areas where you dont need to take a chance. He'll definitely learn though.

Good to know, I was worried I was crazy.

It's nice to have someone so comfortable going forward at RB, it's been a while!

I agree about Evans and Valencia. I can only think Rafael's confidence is low and in need of a boost. The boss is very canny with his praise

 Just to boost his low confidence. What a crock of shit.

He got praise because he deserved it, he was one of the best players on the pitch last night. He was good defensively, got in quick and tight. He also made some cracking tackles. He looked good going forward in tandem with Valencia and was a joy to watch.

There's so much wrong with this post. The Rafael stuff has been well covered by others so I'll point out the Evans/Rio stuff is the wrong way around.

As already pointed out his passing was fine. Valencia is an excellent player and works hard defensively, but Rafael has shown several times that he's able to do the job at right back without Valencia, so it's stupid to take anything away from Rafael just because he happens to play behind a good player. You could say the exact same thing about Evra when Young plays left wing if you want, but Evra was "excellent" according to you.

I also find it very odd that you say Rio was "awesome" and Evans had "a couple of jitters". If anything Rio's reluctance to get close (because he was either saving himself or felt his back early one) was the reason why Fulham had anything at all for the first 60 minutes or so. Every time Evans was close to the ball he got to it first and got it away. Evans was miles better than Rio last night. That's a discussion for another thread though, I just picked up on it as it highlights your lack of football knowledge when you combine it with your Rafael assessment.

If you thought it was that low you clearly weren't watching the game. Or you were watching the game wanting Rafael to play bad.

i got Rafael in my MOTM three. Didn't see him do much wrong. quite the opposite really.

You must have a point there; I clearly am looking for the bad he does more than the good. Man Utd set very high standards, and rightly so. When I've been to Italy to watch Utd I've seen their fans boo a single misplaced pass from someone who'd been perfect to that point. At first I was appalled, but then I thought, "no", there's nothing wrong with setting high expectations.

Raf does do a lot of good, but he just makes me nervous when I watch him. He gives the ball away (albeit clearly not as much as I think), and he gets caught out of position - he's young and obviously he'll improve with experience.

Evra was a liability when he first signed. I'd say he's been the best left back in the Prem for a number of seasons. I'll be only too happy to eat my words, but I stand by them for now

thanks, happy to see some evidence. Clearly more accurate than I thought. It does support what I said about the vast majority of his passes being backwards though

But is that a bad thing? I'd much rather he retained possession going backwards than lost the ball going forwards. At fullback a lot of the time you will have to resort to going back when the space is closed up or else the alternative will be going long which presumably you wouldnt want if you're not a fan of his passing.

And? Ball retention is excellent for a full-back, he had more touches of the ball than anyone bar Carrick, won 3 tackles and made 3 interceptions with 2 fouls which wasn't even the most in our team.

I'd say, and also backed by statistics, that Rafael's a fairly astute passer and reasonably seldom gives the ball away.

He's also got a cracking cross on him, as evidenced for example against Wolves last week, although he didn't have his best crossing game vs Fulham.

He gets forward well, and Valencia seems to love playing with him, and for all the talk about him being positionally suspect/and or rash, I thought that was the most pleasing aspect last night. He never gave Frei the opportunity to go past him, stuck tight, and didn't dive in, and he was positioning himself really well throughout the match.

I thought that was a very assured performance.

Massively disagree with that.

On the rare times Pogrebnyak had some joy it was when he was clashing with Rio. I think Rio could have been a bit more physical with him though to be fair Pogrebnyak is a strong player. He seemed to win cheap throw-ins or was able to lay the ball off to a team mate when he came up against Rio

Evans won pretty much every challenge he went for. He seems to have found a physicalilty in his game which I don't think he had as much of before. Has been our best player bar none recently

It's like you were trying to get absolutely everything wrong, and you nailed it.

What app is that?

FourFourTwo Football Stats Zone.

Free download but costs £0.69 to unlock the Premier League stats from this season. There's also Champions League stats but that also requires another £0.69 to unlock and there are stats from the 2010/11 season in both the Premier League and Champions League that are free to view. Worth every penny.

My old man comes up with shit like that, he made his mind up that he was too small for a RB on his debut and slates every mistake since.

Some people forever have clouded judgement

Cool thanks for that, showing up £1.49 for this season. Think I'll give that a miss as there are only 8 games left. Will purchase it from the start of next season though.

My Grandad is the same about Fabio. He played really badly once and ever since every time he makes a mistake he says "his twin Rafael has all the talent, he is not fit for Conference football, we obviously only signed him as they were a package".

Very strange.

Strange, surely it's more relavent now 30 games have gone? I use it to analyse certain teams before I lay any bets down and it's definately helped there, like checking cards and what not before playing trebles. It's also great for checking out players and seeing if they match up to your image of them, like Giggs for example who I've been criticising a lot and you can really get an idea of wether the stats match your suspicion. Passes, attacking third passes, tackles, interceptions and blocks for example. It gives you a good idea of what's actually going on.

What's £1.49 though really? Half a larger?

Larger what? App? Depends how much larger, really. If it's one that costs £2.99 then yes, it would be about half of that.

Bugger. That would be my autocorrect.

We only sell City the second-raters to buy better players like the Ox and Ramsey.
