Racism in European Football

Yup, we need much more tougher rules here, it's naive to think this was only a problem with Guimarães White Angels supporters, every club here has a small sample of racists, and a lot of them felt recently emboldened with that clown Ventura elected to the Parliament. But that's another issue. What needs to be done is much more heavier financial sanctions to the clubs, and heavy sanctions to those clowns who do that shit inside the stadium.

The Portuguese league disciplinary committee also applied other fines on Guimarães for incidents during the game, including 4,017 euros for bringing flares into the stadium, 3,392 euros for throwing objects at the Porto bench and 7,140 for removing and throwing seats.

In the aftermath of the Kamara-Kudela incident in the Europa League game between Slavia Prague and Rangers, some Slavia ultras thought it was a good idea to pose with this banner:

(and yes, they spelled out the n-word entirely, the blurring was added by the journalist)

We had some lovely Slavia fans in here yesterday saying how innocent & open minded they were as a club & how it was big bad Rangers fault.

Did you see all the comments on Roofes social media?

If they (UEFA) don’t take this opportunity to take a hard line and throw them out of the competition, it’ll be a travesty.

they could really, really make a stand here

Not sure you should throw out a team because of their fans as you would have to throw Rangers out for a start.

If there is proof the player was racist then he should be banned.

Don’t see what the issue is here with that banner & those fans. The appropriate governing body will hammer Slavia hard with a foundationally-crushing €714 fine. Such a punishment will quickly eradicate such behavior going forward, no doubt. These feckers should be suspended from all competition for the remainder of the season.

The only punishments possible are fines, and bans.

Fines have been shown to not make a single iota of difference. If their fans want to behave like racists, then their team will suffer. I think that's fair.

Shouldn't that be restricted to stadiums though? The club can't really control fans at home. What if a Sparta Prague fan decides to pose as a Slavia fan with this banner just to get their rivals banned from the competition?

At the very least the first step must be a lifetime ban from all European stadiums and from social media for these idiots in the picture.

No. The club should be banned. It is about time clubs took responsibility for their fan base. Instead a lot of clubs are terrified of their fans, the so called Ultras.

You can literally ban every club in Europe then... I agree clubs have the absolute responsibility over what happens in their stadiums and on their social media. They also have a duty to inform/educate, especially towards young kids. And to unequivocally condemn any racist incidents (especially involving so called loyal fans). But they can't be held responsible for every idiot's everyday life.

You do wonder if it needs a mixture of both, the fans getting banned from stadium, but also if the club is banned, their own fans might take charge of their fellow supporters a bit. If nothing happens to the club, then the banned fans just sit at home, once the stadiums are open again, watching their European games on TV. Think social media should do more as well. Also if they are going to fine a club, make it a massive fine, an eye watering fine. Not a drop in the ocean find. Make other clubs sit up and take notice.

So what's your plan? If we want City out of PL, we can just pose as City fans with a banner like that about Pogba or Rashford and we are champions? If it will work like this I go and order my first Aguero shirt.

You would presume there would be investigation to make sure that doesn't happen. I am not against fine, but as I said the ones they hand out are meaningless. Hit the clubs in the pockets hard and maybe they will control their fans and in some cases their own players.

Uefa and Fifa have never shown any real desire to rid racism from the game..

Clearly clubs should be booted out of the competition and facing crippling financial sanctions.

How could a club control 100m fans around the world? I think all clubs would be out of the competition by the end of the season.

Exactly it's ridiculous to suggest clubs should be thrown out and punished because of their fans.

There wouldn't be a club able to play anywhere.

How about we just punish the guilty instead?

Or maybe there are better ways to address the problem.
Like what? Ban the fans, they will still be on social media spouting their sh*t in the name of their club. Education. You can only educate people who want to be educated. Didn't this latest issue come from the alleged behaviour of a player, then the fans have just stirred it up a bit more?

Your ideas and comments are so childish. Propose totally unrealistic solutions and then acting out because people showed how dumb it sounds. :wenger:
I am not saying people are necessarily wrong, but then come up with a solution. Paltry fines do nothing and are laughing in the faces of the people who are being abused. I am having a go at the authorities here. UEFA and FIFA are they main problem as they do not take it seriously. They are just paying lip service.

People more adept than me will deal with the abhorrent social media racism by fans, but it feels so easy to stamp out player-to-player racism. Once a player is found guilty, give him a season ban and a fine worth hundreds of thousands of pounds. He’ll have no grounds to appeal it because well...he was racist.

Let’s see whether there are any cases of racism against black or Asian players, players from poorer backgrounds or whoever is exposed to it after that sort of non-negotiable rule is imposed. It’s that easy imo.

Of course they can. It’s their competition and they can do what they want. They fine clubs and countries for similar things so just make the punishments harsher

if they make a stand and start to punish their fans for their behaviour, I can guarantee that things will change.

Otherwise nothing will.

Make the clubs accountable and hit them hard.

First of all, I wouldn't try to solve 'racism in football', I would rather try to address racism everywhere. Footballers or fans should be punished for racism but it's more important to educate the society and work on social equality.

And I think anyone can be educated if you have good teachers/methods. First, don't be angry. The angrier you are when thinking about solutions the worse your results will be. If you try to 'educate' a bunch of racist people in an angry know-it-all way, they will be defensive (maybe because of hidden guilt what they try to deny) and won't learn. So, you have to understand first. Where does racism come from, history of slavery, what makes us, humans dislike people who are different, why do children bully their weird classmates...

If you understand these maybe you will be able to communicate with 'more conservative' people effectively. So we have have to find the reasons first, then the solutions.

Racism isn't just a football-related problem so it always baffles me how people expect it to be swiftly dealt with. Football clubs, players, fans and associations should not be expected to somehow miraculously fix the racism issue.

So Cavani, who was deemed a racist by the FA, should have been banned for the whole season, in your opinion?

I said player to player. When someone calls another player on the pitch a ‘f*****g m****y’ for example like apparently in the Rangers game. Of course there must be a line drawn, so things like Cavani and Bernardo Silva where they don’t know better, especially in Cavani’s case, shouldn’t be met with such a firm punishment.

I do agree that it is a wider issue and that it needs dealing with with education from a young age. No football should not have deal with it on their own. That is why the platforms for racism should be dealt with as well. I don't understand why someone can hate another human being just because their skin in a different colour. You would have thought that by now we would have learnt something, but it seems not.

People hate each other for various reasons. Race, nationality, religion, a lot of people even hate the fans of their rivals, you can hate someone based on so many stupid and petty things. I just think it's human nature and there will never be a proper or quick fix.

So if an employee good home and is racist on twitter or elsewhere should the company and every other employee get punished?

It is ridiculous beyond belief to suggest a football club should be punished for their fans.

There is not a football club in the world that does not have racist fans.

You punish the guilty party properly not someone else
