Race for top 4 | Finito.

The late goals against Palace and Arsenal have really cost us. We would have been just 2 points behind Arsenal.

Ultimately doesn’t really matter to me where we finish as long as its not outside top 4. So hoping for a Spurs loss.

If we are comfortable in the league we can give FA and Europa a proper go.

Top 4 is still not done. Our away form is not great. We've done very well beating city, Liverpool, arsenal and spurs at home but away we've lost to city and arsenal. We still have to play away to spurs, Liverpool, Newcastle and Brighton. Very tough games.

So hoping for a city win today to open up a bit of gap

Need to win the double header v Leeds before the stupid play off in Europa league. Consolidate top 4 first.

so we are 8 points behind the leaders with 17 games to go and you all are giving up?
Not giving up I just think that, as sad as it sounds, top 4 will be really important this season.

With potential new owners and new investment coupled with FFP, being in the CL places is going to be key.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t or can’t go for top spot but it’s going to be really difficult so for me a City win or ideally a draw would be far more beneficial at this point.

This is the sort of mentality that has caused our once great club to become also-rans! If we aim for the top then top 4 will take care of itself.

This will happen to every team. it hasn’t really cost us anything because we can’t win every game nor can anyone else.
This weekend before Arsenal v City could be huge if we beat Leeds twice

They have to face City two times more than us. Let's not ignore that either.
Fair enough. But it’s not like playing City is an automatic loss or something. They’re way ahead and playing better than us.

And they have a game in hand, miles better goal difference, and they'll put 100% focus on the league while we are in every cup and don't have their level of performance on a week to week basis.... Us winning the title from here would be a miracle happening. It's not on. I'd be very happy with 80 points for us and cup wins. Arsenal are on pace for high 90s.

I find it quite unbelievable that we were fourth, won our match, saw two teams above us lose points and then some here hoped the team in second (our city rivals of all teams) beat the team below us. :wenger:

We are not going to throw this away.

The results this week were almost perfect for us. Time to celebrate!

So you are saying there's a chance?

feck it i'm all aboard the 2nd place train!!! WE GO FOR IT

Would have preferred a draw but we have a game in hand on spurs so if we win on Wednesday we go 6 clear of them and go even on points with citeh

Thank you... To be fair, I wanted a draw. I feel like Arsenal has become our main rival for the title. City getting 1 point today wouldn't be a big deal (They will soon turn their mode onto "total focus on the CL" and drop more points in the way). And at the same time Spurs is still a potential rival, should we drop back to a top 4 race...

But as it stands, I believe we are safe in top 3 with Arsenal and City. We can dream of winning the title... The battle for the fourth spot will concern N'Castle, Spurs and maybe one of Chelsea/Liverpool.

Some amount of blinkers on here. That was the worst result for us. If folk think we're actually going to win the title this year I'll have a pint of what they're on.

Yeah, fortunately the management and players show a lot more resolution than some of the fans on here

Basically Spurs win is imo worst outcome for us but can't complain, it's been a weekend of some great results.

Maybe some are just enjoying the race and even though we have a tiny chance it's more of a chance than it's been for years and years. I don't think we will win the title but second place is definitely within reach and who knows what will happen but at least its exciting.

Get at least 4 points from the next 2 games and we go above City.

I bet we'll still get people saying that going 2nd in the table is somehow a bad thing for us though.

Yep, it's quite bizarre. Spurs winning is bad news for us - it means we can't relax in the league, still can't really build up a cushion over 5th place. We're in all the cups so we'll have a ridiculously congested fixture list and our best passer in midfield is out until April while our first choice striker is ridiculously unreliable. We'll drop a lot of points so we need Spurs, Newcastle et al to do the same.

Spurs will topple Newcastle I think…

People finding out how to play again NC now and with lack of proper goal scorers in team, they will eventually find hard to stay in top 4 but still difficult to beat.

Their last 5 matches ended up with one win and 4 draws:or which only 1 was 1-1, rest 0-0.

I hope the media does not hype us for the title race again. We still need to improve a level or two before we can be challengers. Top 4 and a cup would be a great season for us.

I think Man. United will comfortably get 3rd. You've got a very easy run of home games so you'll win the majority of those and might only need to win half away games to get to 75 points.

How many points are you clear of Brighton? They've turned you over a few times recently so they're ones to watch with how they're playing imo.

Why is that odd to you? City winning benefits us, and cements us further in top 4.

Heapsie is a local lad, goes to every home and away, he’ll have you know. City losing is more important than United benefitting. All of us non-Mancs just don’t get it.

Not sure what i've done to trigger you into this weird dig.

It’s not about winning the title. If we can overcome City it increases our Top 4 chances exponentially. Tottenham are 3 behind us and we have a game in hand. We are closer to taking second than we are dropping out of the Top 4.

We've won 13 in a row at home and we have the 17th placed side at home next. Should beat them and then it's a nice 6 point gap from Spurs with the same games played.

People just don't understand the maths of it.

I've been accused of being negative because I said this result was the worst for us.

We're still in a good place though.
