Quiet Old Trafford

The problem is that there is not enough people who genuinely want to improve the atmosphere.

I’ve been involved in the original ‘singing section’ many years ago and been with that and the move to TRA and I know from numbers, there is just not enough people who want to move in to these areas.

I’ve just applied successfully to move in to the club’s ’atmosphere section’ for reasons outside of this thread but there was only about 5k people who applied. There is not a lot considering that with the new section and TRA, there is only going to be 5k in the SE who will care or try to make a noise.

The rest are just happy to go and watch the game, which is fine but it is what it is. If it bothers you, I would highly recommend that you join TRA as a member and whenever you get tickets apply to be in there. The atmosphere is mint

I'm hopeful for improvement next season with the changes in the Stretford End - 5k sounds small but seeing as the 'singing section' started with just 1.2k in 2019 it's already growing

Quite a few from J Stand are moving to the old TRA section this summer so will improve

I was at the Spurs game in January in Stretty upper and it was dire. Spoke to the lady next to me and she said it's always like that now. I think most of the vocal lads have moved into TRA

We have moved our seats into the new "Atmosphere section" for next season. We are in a group of 37 so hoping that it improves

I’d like to see this as a positive but from me experiences of J stand recently, it’s not a good move. J stand is fecking awful these days.

I’ve put all my eggs in the new club section, which feels a bit risky until I know how it goes but the club seem to be doing it right way and getting the ‘right’ people in there so fingers crossed.

In theory, that with the TRA could be mega across the whole of the SE

This is great news mate.

I’ve made that jump as well. If you’re group see anything like the lads that have moved with, it could be good.

hopefully that keep the £3.20 pints of Madri too.

You’ll have to give me a shout at the start of next season and grab a pint before a game

Yeah, will do mate, hoping it's gonna be good as it tags onto the side of TRA

The worst bit for me is the guy employed to wave the giant flag behind the goal. Can't stand that kind of corporate sanitised nonsense.

I hope we never go down that route.

Ah yes that is a load of bollox too  even my 14 year old daughter (who to be fair has been going home and away since she was 8) recognised it and called it out for being what it is - absolute pony!

It is small but given what 3000 of our away fans can get going it will be noticeable. Hopefully will get expanded.

There have never been ultras in British football.

Infact we are closer to it now than we ever had been previously with organised groups at Palace, Arsenal and the TRA at Utd.
I tried to not make a distinction between hooligans and ultras.

Ya I was in the stretford end for Fulham it was dead but that comes with the amount of chances Fulham created in that 1st half . I’m going Sunday and it’ll be electric I’m hoping but a lot of it has to do what’s happening on the pitch.

Don't hold your breath. It has been flat as a pancake even in the big games this season, including City at home.

Old Trafford has never had the reputation for being a great atmosphere, but right now it is far worse than it ever was under Fergie and certain points in the last 10 years. You can sense that supporters have given up for the most part and just want the season to end. The football is shite, we're miles off our rivals in terms of quality, we've got a guy in the dugout who everyone knows is a dead man walking, and a team that aren't really that likeable or relatable in their attitude. There's just nothing 'Manchester United' about us these days. I think many could forgive results if the attitude and application was there, and there was an attempt to play aggressive, attacking football, but there just isn't.

I've been going regularly for 20 years, season ticket holder for over 15 now I think, and that was the best atmosphere in my time. After what happened in Rome, you could sense the United fans wanted revenge that night. Never been so pumped up for a game before and I think everyone was the same.

it was certainly the loudest outside the ground, as the Roma fans arrived, I’d seen in years.
When Rooney scored the third the roof came off. Happy times.

We don't often bother, but we went round to the away fan entrance that night to join in the atmosphere. I just remember the train pulling in and a large group of them getting off, then a shower of bottles heading their way. They looked keen to get into the ground that night.

Leeds first game after covid on the forecourt was very lively by modern standards but other than that it was the last time I've seen away fans literally having to run into the ground.

I was at the Fulham game and it was quiet for much of the game (understandably so) Then when the team started going for it I thought it was as loud as I’ve heard it for a long time, so there can be an atmosphere sometimes I guess but the players on the pitch need to do something to get people going.
Another thing I notice at OT and it makes me a bit sad in a way is that you see little pockets of people or even individuals trying to get something going and they always seem to get defeated and have to sit down or keep quiet. I do think it’s quite an awkward place in that respect, feel like we have a lot more passive fans in large sections of OT than there are in other stadiums. This isn’t to criticise everyone because there are a sizeable number of vocal fans, they just get diluted by the rest in our massive stadium

The club made a bit of a mess when J Stand first started by forcing people to move and then there was the kind of split with TRA when a load shifted over so got a bit watered down over time

I guess this is the new opportunity to do it properly and bigger, hopefully it works out

I am also moving over BTW

This has passed me by a little. The club are running an atmosphere section independent from TRA as of next year?

The TRA section is staying in the usual spot?

Yes and no.

TRA is staying but moving behind the goal at the Stretford End where the exec seats currently are

The clubs ‘atmosphere section’ is going where TRA currently are

Both independent of each other but sitting next door

If that's done properly it should make a huge difference.

Might help save Stret tier two aswell which has been heavily diluted in the last five years and find it impossible to keep up with the speed of TRA songs.

I'm in J for the Scousers on Sunday, will be a rare occasion it's good as we'll have 9k of them next to us.

Cool. What seats are you in? Is there a group of you?

J stand needed to change. It was shit after a while. TRA luckily hasn’t gone the same way but has its own negative features.

Hopefully they’ll find a way to have a good relationship and make it work for the sake of the atmosphere

I got an email from the club saying they were accepting invitations to move to the Stretford end, but only from members who had applied for 50% or more of away games over the last 3 seasons or would like to form groups with their friends. I have a couple of match going friends but no one wanted to move and I have only been eligible to apply for away tickets for 2 years...

I’d have recommended applying anyway.
They might have had single seats available at the end that they could have allocated to you.

Worth a phone call to the club?

Ye hopefully this makes a difference - 2 seperate standing sections next to each other with people who want to sing should work in theory

And it was a good idea from the club to prioritise groups of mates and those who had applied for the most away tickets

See you in J on Sunday !

First game back post trip. Not been since the cup semi final last season.

Yes it's a group - I'm not even sure how many as I'm not the lead on it but at least 20 that I know well and then mates of mates

Need to check where exactly but it's definitely W210

Agree on TRA - they have done a good job and always enjoyed it when I went in there, 20yrs ago I'd have been bang up for it but nowadays it's not for me

Worth contacting the club still - there will be quite a bit of shifting around this summer

I haven't been in a few years (to my shame) but I've always found it hit and miss.

Stretford End lower was usually decent, but even then if it was a midweek game so many people would swap their tickets sometimes you wouldn't recognise anyone around you and the atmosphere would be flat.

South Stand as always quiet, East seemed to vary but could be decent. SAF stand I think I've only been sat in once or twice.

Worst game was midweek vs West Ham in the South Stand, the game where Berbatov did the skill thing. It felt like about -30 degrees and everyone just sat in silence the entire game, apart from brief amusement when a West Ham fan in a pink shirt got removed from the away section. Or the Celtic game in the South Stand where the only people making noise were the Celtic fans scattered around there, and then they shut up due to their team getting hopelessly thrashed for the entire 90 minutes.

I've been in the home section at Stamford Bridge quite a few times and the atmosphere there was usually worse. Again though depended where in the ground and on the opponent.

Do you still have that seat near the weird drunk guy who'd always take everyone's money for drinks and then just not come back?

Yeah, I might try them.

Which big screens are these? Have you every been to Old Trafford?
Have i every been to old trafford? no, but i have been to old trafford many many times, living in salford. And big screens are those things that can be rented or displayed for the purposes of watching football. hope this helps.

No I moved (partly due to him!) when they started the first 'singing section'

Was a the best seat for atmosphere on the big occasions though - just few rows from the away end. Remember being there for the Rooney overhead kick and 4-3 derby win among others. Conversely the worst place.to be when we lost though - I was in that bit for the 1-6 derby loss!

Atmosphere has been shite at OT for years but it's at least as shite as everywhere else.

It also has very little to do with what is served up on the pitch. Roy Keane's prawn sandwich comment was made in 2000. IMUSA was formed partly in response to declining atmosphere in 1994.

Ultimately, football has changed. 30 years of price increases, all seater stadiums and over zealous stewarding/police killed football fan culture in this country.

The atmosphere is far worse now than it was under Fergie and for a few years after. It was bad then but its chronic now, you can feel the apathy in the ground. I said to somebody during the City game that it was dead and felt like a pre season game. I've not noticed it ever being that bad against City at home before.

I describe our football as insipid, tedious, ugly, moribund.

An idea to raise the atmosphere would be to play back pivotal moments between clubs on the big screens whilst the teams warm up. So, for example..Vs Liverpool, we could show Robbie Fowler sniffing the white line, and also the spice boys video, of the team in poncy white suites. V city we could show the haaland leg break in slow motion..
There are no big screens in OT  There’s a scoreboard though
