Is there any indication that the normal PS3 are get much cheaper when this new, slim PS3 come out? And when exactly is all this going to happen?

- As for the slimmed-down PS3, it, too, is real, according to the mole--but Sony won't begin selling the new PS3 until stock dwindles on the PS3 currently on store shelves. The source is targeting August or September for possible launch dates.

- There's no word on if Sony plans to strip any features out of the alleged PS3 Slim or if it will cost less than the current model.

- The mole claims that Sony isn't expected to announce a price cut on the current PS3 to clear inventory, "but the possibility is certainly there." (This obviously has the biggest no-duh quotient of any of the statements.)

Wow. That really is slim.

Still, I like my PS3, it's quiet and looks like Darth Vadars toaster. If they slim it down I imagine they'd have to get some louder fans for it.

Firstly, it's not a slim (this would still be a very large console). Secondly, it's obviously real.

The 45nm Cell is coming into the production line (this is fact), maybe even a 45nm RSX (this is unknown), both of which would require less power and generate less heat. Also, the current PS3 has the power supply in the box, take it out. This is coming, and it's coming soon.

So, financially talking, you reckon it doesnt make sense getting a new PS3 now but rather wait for the slimmer edition to come and hope that the prices for the old PS3 will go down?

I'm quite sure that you will see it around September time. How they price it is a different matter, they could introduce this at the current price and drop the original by 100. One thing is for sure, they cannot afford to go another Christmas again at the current price point, and they cannot afford to drop the price on the current model and keep producing it.

PS3 in terms of sales hasn't done as badly as many people think though. This is the most recent data for the three main markets.

Considering the launch date, and the price, it's not a flop.

I was in game yesterday and seen an original 60gb PS3, 1 game, extra controller, and a bluetooth headset for £350

Looks like a square version of the current model to me without the lacquer.

The lack of lacquer makes it look extremely shit. I reckon the reason a lot of people are claiming that these pictures are fake is because it looks so cheap and tacky. It appears to be made out of kinder toy plastic and the 'Playstation 3' font looks like something a toddler knocked up in paint.

Do you mean the power supply will now be part of the power cable? Instead of inside the console itself? I might wait to pick up the slim, because my TV area is kinda small. I've been waiting for the price cut, if it does actually happen. I don't game as much as I used to and my 360 handles what I need, but I'm starting to shop for a Blu-ray player now.

Yes, a brick (power supply unit) outside of the box, just like the 360.

Not this big though. ;)

Amazon has a better deal, an 80gb PS3, plus Infamous, plus HDMI cable, for £279.

I'd expect to see a return at some point, in software emulation. Technical difficulties aside, the money they could make by selling PS2 games over PSN is just too much for them to ignore, but they are still selling PS2s and making a lot of money from that (PS2 and PSP has kept them afloat while they have been losing so much with the PS3), so I suppose that we'll have to wait.

As for how they can get the size of the PS3 down, here's a few images most of you will not have seen, and maybe do not realise how well packed the stuff inside a PS3 is. This is an original end 2006 PS3 opened up.

As you can see, the whole top half of the machine is taken up by a huge BD drive (right), a largish PSU (back left), WiFi and some card readers (front left - card readers have gone now). Take out that PSU, stick in a much slimmer laptop sized BD player, and almost half the height of the machine has gone.

Underneath that is the fan on top of the mobo (motherboard). This (note how the heat sink fins are not below the fan like in a PC, but surround the fan):

That fan was designed for the 90nm Cell and RSX, so they should be able to shrink that down also.

Not thought of that

Will be epic to be able to buy all those games for the PS3.

Jesus that is well packed in, especially compared to the PS2. You could lose a small goat in there.

That looks nice actually.

My original one is still going strong though....i see from the link that its a 'mockup' so it not official?

No, it's based on leaked information (now serious lack of old PS3 stock in certain places around the world, semi-conductor companies reporting increased orders for components from Sony, and what was said by the chief financial officer of Sony regarding the PS3 last week when they published their last quarter results) and photographs (of which much debate has been had regarding fake or not fake). It's coming.

“The cost reduction since we introduced the PS3 is very substantial and this is on schedule,” Oneda-san replied when asked about manufacturing costs. “We don't disclose how much of the PS3, specifically the cost deduction was achieved during the past two years. But that is on schedule.”

“About 70%, roughly speaking,” Oneda-san added when pressed further on the matter. Although a precise manufacturing cost isn't known, it's widely believed that the PlayStation3 originally cost Sony approximately $800 (£485) per unit. In January 2008 reports surfaced that the manufacturing costs had been reduced by 50% to approximately $400 (£243). Although Sony wouldn't elaborate on exact figures, the 70% decrease suggests that costs have come down to around $240 (£146) per unit.

Who's buying one? Think I'll just stick to my one now to be honest.

If you already have one what is the point in getting this just because its smaller?

Also, Weaste, you would think to make it smaller there would be bits from the origional that wont be in this new version. Do you know what these will be?

Everything is simply made smaller (see post 24). I like by big in your face shiny one, no matter what TheReligion says about it. It looks and feels like it's expensive and well built, even though I would have always preferred it if they had released a version in a Hi-Fi separates case. They have simply cost reduced it, halved the size of the chips, got the BD drive down to laptop size, etc. It had too much cutting edge technology when first released.

The smaller one doesn't have that "hey look at me" type feel.

If they can sell this at £199, then it will sell like hotcakes. In the last quarter worldwide it only sold 100,000 less than XB360 (1m to 1.1m) when Wii sales were cut in half from the same quarter in 2008 from 5 to 2.5 million.
