Sir Alex Ferguson: Rafael Benitez lucky over Chelsea job timing

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has replaced Roberto Di Matteo at Chelsea at a fortunate time.
Benitez won the World Club Cup with Inter soon after taking over from Jose Mourinho and could to do so again when Chelsea play in the event next month.
"Rafael Benitez is very lucky," Ferguson said.
"On his CV in two weeks he could have two world championships and nothing to do with the construction of the teams

Fergie wasting no time

In all seriousness though, fair comment.

To be fair though, Rafa's not at fault for it. And Di Matteo inherited a team as well, 2 months before UCL win. Either way

"Rafael Benitez is very lucky," Ferguson said.

Di Matteo was sacked after only eight months in charge at Chelsea, having won the Champions League and FA Cup.

"Everyone feels for Roberto Di Matteo and quite rightly," Ferguson said. "It's quite amazing that you win the FA Cup and the Champions League [and lose your job]."

Benitez, 52, who was involved in several disputes with Ferguson during his spell at Anfield from 2004-2010, won the Italian Super Cup and Club World Cup during a six-month reign at Inter but was sacked in December 2010 and has not been in a managerial post since.

The Spaniard's new team are still involved in five competitions and are currently third in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Manchester City.

They travel to Japan for a World Club Cup semi-final on 13 December with the final three days later.

fact

Any idea who'll be appearing with him today?

No chance of Vidic playing.

TO THE LINE-UPS THREAD!

Sir Alex: "I don't think Nemanja [Vidic] will play. He feels he needs another few days' training so he won't be available. He's not far away. He's training well now but I think another few days will bring him on better. If he doesn't play tomorrow there's no chance he'll play in the derby game."

Daniel Taylor saying - Ferguson also says Kagawa started running again today and could be on the bench for Sunday's game #mufc #mcfc

Says Rooney plays against Cluj.

What madness is this?!! Days before the toughest game of the season, he's going to risk our best player in a match that literally means nothing to us? :wenger:

until he goes in the physio for a rub down, after which it will be announced he is out until march!:wenger:

Fergies already talked about how its harder for Rooney to stay in shape more than most. Its more important for us that he remains match sharp than being rested. I'm sure he'll not overdo it, an hour would leave him in good nick for the weekend

What time is it?

Looking forward to some good news on the injuries front. Kagawa, Valencia and Vidic all due to comeback and positive news on the Ando and Cleverley front.

Aren't you optimistic!

"Tom Cleverley will have a scan this morning and we'll see what he's like. It's his calf injury, which is a worry, but we'll see. I thought Kagawa may have done enough to make the bench on Sunday but I don't think he'll be available until the Sunderland game. Vida, he's doing well in training but I think the game on Sunday is a bit soon. I think he'll be ready for Sunderland. I know we've got a few injuries at the moment but we've got a big strong squad of players. Nani and Valencia are still out. It will be a few weeks with them."

Bugger.

Why is Valencia out for a few more week? Last time I remember him saying that he would fit for the City game.

I think he is lying and we would see Valencia start.

Would be interesting if someone can list some classic Fergie's lies (which can sometimes be interpreted as a sort of mind game) on injured/recovering players.

Damn!! I thought Valencia was dropped but turns out he was injured. Would've been really useful v City.

It'll probably get it's own thread soon enough. For now, however...

FFS! Another waste of time pre-season contributing nothing but jetlag and, no doubt, a host of injuries. Why can't we just go back to the USA? It's the perfect balance between profit and football, providing a good string of matches played against decent opposition whilst training at top-class facilities. The 2011 USA Tour was basically the reason for our blistering start that season.
