The Premier League may consider imposing punishments on individual players if they feel goal celebrations are damaging the reputation of the game or could inflame opposition fans or players.

"Some of the celebrations have been very funny [and] entertaining but there's a line," said the Premier League's chief football officer, Tony Scholes; "Once it crosses over into mockery or criticism, then we would need to deal with it," he added.

So, where's the fine line? I think it's a bit ridiculous if they try to decide what was too mocking, and what was just cheeky enough  nonsense.

If the players have to take the abuse they do from the stands, then they should be able to celebrate a goal in a slightly antagonist way, assuming it's not offensive.

Refs being shit? Players diving? Teams cheating FFP? Nah, it's the celebrations that we need to worry about!

Man City getting away with their years of systemic cheating at the same time as we start punishing goal celebrations really would be something

I’m looking forward to every goal we score being awarded 6 or 7 yellow cards by Michael Oliver for players partaking in a “mocking celebration”

What is it with guys named Scholes and speaking absolute nonsense?

Lewis-Skelly’s influence is already massive

Can only assume this in response to Haaland being mocked on Sunday. As if we needed further proof that the league is in City's pocket.

They should just announce that they're fine to carry on cheating and be done with it.

Every player that scores a goal should from here on in, should mock them in some way.

Can understand this in a sense but it's context-dependent and Lewis-Skelly was mocking a player who already mocked his team so...

What a ridiculous rule. No player as there name on a celebration. Therefore it doesn’t belong to them. Players can celebrate how they want.

Serves the knobheads who have trademark celebrations right.

In all seriousness, what a stupid fecking idea.

They can’t get referees and VAR officials to follow and understand the rules of the game , best of luck getting them to understand a “mocking celebration”
VAR check for inappropriate celebration incoming

As much as Arsenal are pathetic, this is just another painful step towards the death of this sport. Where’s the fecking fun anymore? Overly sanitized shite.

Didn't honestly see much wrong with the celebration. He was responding to someone openly mocking his team. Are we not allowed to have banter anymore?

Haaland literally threw a ball at Gabriel’s head to taunt him during a celebration (which incidentally was for an equaliser at home - something that would have been derided as small time had Arsenal done it) and no one batted an eyelid.

City are like that the mouthy kid who cries to the teacher the second anyone gives them even the slightest taste of their own medicine.

Of all the things that could be improved upon in the game this is what they're focusing on?

I think they should go even further and ban goal celebrations all together.

Knobheads…

Take humans out of football completely, I say. Just leave a ball on the pitch and check up on it after 90 minutes, let the natural elements determine what happens.

Good process lads. Next thing on the agenda is banning any representation of the devil and weapons in club logos.
