Premier League Matchday 21 (January 1-3)

We're gaining ground every game it seems.

This week it's Chelsea who drop points. Did anyone see how they played?

Wolves-Palace was a 90s game. Very entertaining in a "WTF am i watching" sort of way

Should have won, but until they sign a reliable goalscorer games like this will keep happening. Really missed Pedro tonight. Willian went out injured and RLC replaced him and was dreadful. Good cameo by Cesc, still far and away the best chance creator on their team, but came on too late and for the wrong player

Appreciated.

Gonna have to watch MotD tonight :)

We played a defensive game. OK, they had a goal ruled out, but the big teams really need to be able to break down defensive sides like we set out today. While they had the better chances, they didn't play that well, and actually didn't create a whole lot of clear cut chances. Lots of long range shots which shows a lot of closing down.Compared to the 3-0 victory they had against us at home earlier (under Hughes) it was chalk and cheese.

I managed about 60 minutes but couldn't bare the NBC commentary anymore after that. We controlled the game but lacked a bit of creativity. Good goal chalked off. Same against Palace.

More injuries, Willian this time. Will Moses get a run out, we don't have any other wingers fit?

Southampton will be o.k I suspect. No idea on the two teams who'll join Huddersfield in getting relegated. They are all picking up points at long last.
Unless Fulham sort their defence out they are going down. Then it a choice between Newcastle/Cardiff/Burnley

Fulham are starting to pick up points against teams around them, 8 points against Wolves, Huddersfield, Newcastle and Southampton since Ranieri took over. Still got to play likes of Cardiff and Newcastle at the Cottage although also got a number of home games against top 6 which isn't ideal.

Ahh, 11 hours to go... I wasn't even remotely nervous before the CL final, as I never really expected us to win it. Hell, I spent a lot of it shitposting on here with you guys :D But tonight? Tonight, I'm anxious. Just play the game already.

That is what football is all about. Glad we as United fans have that back now!

Let me help. 7 points. You can afford to lose this game. Don't lose it, and you've won the league

City fans already getting the excuses in. Refs had them over, fa are corrupt and eufa want them banned. They've got some nerve calling us candle lighters.

Yeah, you'd be hard pressed to find any sensible Liverpool fan who wouldn't take a draw right now.

City will throw everything at you early doors tonight I imagine. Weather the early storm and you could hurt them. They're a bit shit at the back. You're not.

Liverpool will win tonight...I can't honestly see them being beaten this season because the state of the sides in the league after the top 6.

So yeah I'm not really getting hopes up of a City win

Damn. I was perfectly calm up till now but I've just had my first nervous fart. This is becoming as much nerve wrecking as the CL semi final first leg last season.

How long until there's talk of Liverpool winning the league and CL double, or even the treble? :p

Could honestly see them winning the lot.

7 points would be a big advantage but its not over. City get that down to say 5 by the end of January (drawing one less game) and Liverpool might start getting nervous heading into the final few months.

Bit random this but I remember when Zidane took over Real Madrid after Benitez was sacked, I think they were something like 10 points behind in January and ended up pushing Barca to the final day and only lost it by 1 point. Things can change. 10 points would likely be too much, but 7 points, providing City have a better 2nd half of the season and 7 points is doable.

Enough of that. We haven't won anything since 2012 so let's not pretend that we're about to win the lot.

I think this game is the first proper mental test of this City side in nearly two years.
I have this fear they will crumble. The simply have to win.

I know I'm in a minority in this, but I think they can get away with a draw. 7 points isn't as insurmountable as people think, Liverpool definitely favourites, but its not a cert.

City tore Liverpool apart in the first half at the Etihad in their second leg of the Champions League tie last spring. Absolutely ripped them to shreds. If it weren’t for some appalling officiating and unbelievable luck (this happened at Anfield too, remember, with City having a goal wrongly chalked off for offside), Liverpool would’ve been three or four down at half time. Of course Liverpool picked them off on the counter in the second half - Salah’s goal was completely against the run of play and obviously turned the tie on its head as it destroyed City’s resolve - but City, when they are on it, proved they are undoubtedly the best team in England.

Yes, in reality 7 points is nothing. In the 2011/2012 season, both City and United reversed 8 points deficits on each other within the space of three months.
But I think City not winning today would be a psychogical blow.

Agreed. As long as City don’t lose, the title is still up for grabs.

P.S. How annoying does Spurs’ loss to Wolves last week look right now?

You're not a minority.

City are far too good to be written off with half the season yet to be played.

Spurs are really annoying for Sky.
They keep slipping up in their player comparison piece, top two this and that.
Spurs are second!

City are a very good team, Fernandinho / De Bruyne are fit I think which is a massive plus.

Pep has history coming from behind in a title race against a juggernaut winning almost every match. in La Liga 09/10, Barcelona were a point behind RM before game at the nou camp, then hammered them and went on to win the title 99 to 96 points. Hopefully we'll get a repeat tonight / this season.

City need to play a perfect game from a discipline point of view though. Any whiff of contact in the box and wouldn't be surprised to see another Liverpool penalty.

7 points isnt tonnes other seasons, but this season itll surely be too much.
Liverpool will have ticked another tough game off, still not lost and barely conceded a goal.

City need to win tonight, then 4 points will not be insurmountable. Especially if Liverpool see Salah miss a few games
