Premier League - Matchday 18

What a miss....outside of the post from 3 cm

How many times in this game will Ipswich clearly be fouled from behind, only for Arsenal to be given the freekick?

Arsenal are doing the City thing, of monopolising possession then commit a cynical foul when they lose the ball. Saliba got away with it on Delap, then Havertz got booked finally for doing the same thing a few mins later.

Some of these blatant tactical fouls to stop a counter attack should really be red cards imo.

Then you would have more low block teams punting it forwards in the hope of getting a decision.

I don't even like when we play like this, and i don't think we do it that well. We have been very poor this game.

Maybe so, but a booking just doesn’t feel like sufficient punishment for what is essentially an act of cheating (strong wording I know, couldn’t think of another descriptor).

0 interest in the ball, looking at him the whole way, rugby tackling in the box: "not enough for me"

Its a shitte way to play. Today was a statement to make and instead we have gone with Havertz in midfield when our bench is full of midfielders. And as soon as Merino comes on and Havertz is moved upfront our play improves. Its fecking baffling why this Havertz midfield experiment goes on especially when last year he proved he's much better up front.

How long Odegaard is down on the floor for a face brush from a hand. That's after being on the floor for about ten minutes after a slight shove only 15 mins ago.

"What do you mean we're not likeable?"

It's obviously done to reward Jesus and give him minutes. No better games than Palace and Ipswich to try and get him in a good rythm. Even more so now that Saka is out.
If we were playing a big team, Jesus would be on the bench.

Yea I guess I see that more as having the advantage of being the team controlling the game. We don't give red cards away for potential attacks, has to be more than that.

Yellow cards are fine here. May need to give them out a little more.

Do you think Jesus has a future at the club? I genuinely feel we should cash in next year.

I hear you, it’s more the intention and act from the person committing the foul than the loss of a potential chance that annoys me.

Of course not, i wanted him sold last summer to bring in someone new. But this is December, you have to rotate and these are the games to do it.
I don't know what statement you wanted to be made tonight either ? Against ipswich ? We easily smashed 5 past Palace away only a few days ago, the next 2 games are where we'll need to show we can still have a small hope of staying in the race.

Hope we get some creative reinforcement (s) this January. Way too static out there at times. Move the damn ball around with purpose.

Arsenal dull as dishwater
Zero characters on their team and players of quality to get bums off seats like the peak days of Wenger.

One goal in two home matches against strugglers Everton, Ipswich will hardly convince anyone they are good enough to mount a series title challenge.

Just about held on against Ipswich!
And this is who we're clinging onto that tiny bit of hope for stopping Liverpool

I don't get the logic that he missed so it's fine... If you swing a punch you'd get sent off, what's the difference?
Scholes got sent off at Anfield for throwing one and missing.

Clattenberg said they’ve removed intent from the laws of the game for red cards now so actually has to make contact for it to be an issue.

These refs baffle me

I wanted him to stop using players in positions he shouldn't. Havertz in midfield is a proven disaster we played last season till we figured out its not the best thing to do. Then we go out splash the money on Merino. Him, Partey, Nwaneri and Jorginho all start on the bench while Havertz again starts in midfield. Its a silly thing to do when you have actual 4 midfielders sat on the bench. And our play improves instantly in the second half when Merino comes on and Havertz moves to the front.

I want some arrogance and swagger, instead of eeking out a 1-0 against a relegation threatened team. You'e right we easily beat Palace but its at home where we have dropped some utterly daft points. Liverpool even 10 men last week were all over their opponents, that's what I want to see at home.

Let me guess - Ipswich had a counter attack?
Quite a lame attempt at being amusing especially when you support a club known for diving cheats, Ipswich player raked his heels and his achilles twice.

We just don't have the forwards to win this league I'm afraid, especially with Saka out for 3 months.

It's weird saying that when no-one has scored more than us the last 12 months, but we tend to be clutch scorers. We can score 5 goals a a game or 2 in a row, then draw 0-0 or get beat 1-0 the game after.

It's not a disaster of a season like many would want you to believe. Still 2nd in league, in league Cup semi, 3rd in Champions League despite the setbacks. But ultimately I think we'll fall short when the big prizes are handed out at the end of the season, and we must address the attack over the next couple of windows.

No, you're completely missing my point mate. I totally agree with your last paragraph and I also agree that people simply get lazy and call every goal 'set piece' when we have won now the most wins in a year by 5 or more goals away from home (I posted this weeks ago) and have scored the most goals last year.

My point is the team he chooses. It'd be like choosing Partey to keep playing as RB while White, Tomiyasu, Timber are all on the bench. Surely you can see playing a forward player in midfield, a position said player is always very poor in as evidenced by last year, when we have FOUR actual midfields sat on the bench; is extremely weird? It's nothing to do with Saka being out.

This very conservative approach has already cost us points at home. More than once. An example is Everton, why play 2 defensive midfielders against them? They carry no scoring threat, we're at home. Go out and smash them. What happens? We drop more points. And make no mistake yesterday, all it would have taken is one mistake and it'd been 1-1. Even dropping 2 points now is a title ender.

Great post, considering the quoted incident is actually about Odegaard faking a head injury to stop a late counter...

With how Ipswich played, it would have came to nothing anyway. Strange lack of ambition late on by them.

I get your point. I wouldn't describe our approach as a negative approach though, you say he's playing a forward in midfield so it kind of suggests that the approach itself isn't negative.

However, I agree it doesn't work a lot of the times and it upsets the balance of the team. I want to persevere with Merino there as I think that's the best balance.

What I find weird about his selection is that we are now down to 4 fit forwards. So playing them all in each game is both risky in terms of picking up any more injuries, it also makes it impossible to make any attacking changes if your looking for a goal.

I'd be tempted to try Nwaneri in place of Saka some games.

I really want to see Nwaneri more, I wished we'd seen more of him when Odegaard was out seeing as we dropped points anyway. I'd also try out Skelly a bit more up the pitch, I read he wasn't originally a fullback?
