Premier League Gameweek 6

Is Elanga's hairline receding? Why is he rocking the Noni Madueke headband? Is that what is fashionable these days?

Funny how City went from a club with like 6 FBs to now only one real FB in Walker, all their other defensive players are CBs by formation

Pep has basically changed from using inverted full backs to going with 3124 in possession with Stones going into midfield. In defence they drop back to 2 banks of 4 with essentially 4 CBs.

It's a great system to be fair. Helps when you can just jettison the fullbacks you spent half a billion on to start with.

Cooper taking off Aina makes no sense. Only one of Odoi and Elanga should have come on with Woods/Origi.

And Phillips looks like he won a competition. He just seems so out of place

Not that I want to purposefully continue to go after him, but yeah, that dreadful minute where he lost it twice in possession was just insane. If you genuinely just swapped him with Rodri, City are likely controlling this with ease still with 10.... and very much, probably Stones too.

I've never seen them look so ordinary even with 10 under Pep before, and a lot of that can come down to how off the pace Phillips is. They can carry that with 11.

Hoping your game with Burnley is better value. This set of games was horrible.

Yep the bold part was what I was thinking about.
Pep was known to have a infinite number of FBs in his squad to now having no FBs but an infinite number of CBs.
Great system and smart to change his tactics, but it helps when you basically have no financial accountability on buying and selling at a premium/loss

Is he selling at a loss though? He is not topping the net spend table and has a squad stronger than most

Not necessarily saying they do, but they don’t really care for their first team. They let go on free transfers Mendy, Gundogan, Aguero, then Laporte for a small fee, Mangala for a small fee, Angelino for a small fee as well, and so on.
They basically make their money by selling academy graduates.
In terms of squad building for their first team, they basically can buy or sell without thinking about resale value.

Watching Brentford v Everton, two things surprise: Ashley Young starts at right back, and James Garner somehow had no place in our team. It surprised me at the time that Ten Hag didn’t give Garner a chance, a player who is tidy on the ball, knits defense and attack. Garner just crossed the ball in for Everton’s first goal. Seems weird we have a bunch of players who panic and make sloppy passes even when under no pressure, and Garner didn’t get much of a look.

This whole "stick Jimmy Garner out wide and tell him to do his best David Beckham impersonation" thing is generally working a whole lot better than I thought it would.
