Premier League Gameweek 37

If they didn't score it would be a red, as it's deliberate

If you scythe someone down and don't make a genuine attempt to get the ball it is still a red card as it is a deliberate action. The handball there is a deliberate action, hence the red for DOGSO.

But because they scored he hasn't denied anything... So it's just a deliberate handball, which is a yellow card
Im under the impression the new rule was for a yellow in this instance? Since the opposing team will get a penalty? (If the scything occurred in the box of course)

Even Steve Mcmanaman thinks he should have seen red.

Take off the rose-tinted specs and think about it
But because the referee allowed the play to continue and Atsu to score no goal was prevented.

You can’t give a red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity when the goal was scored anyway.

It is rare I say this, but this a time I wish the game was on BT so we could get an immediate expert referee opinion on the decision.

For me it’s a red because he committed a deliberate professional foul to stop the ball going into the net. The fact Newcastle scored from the rebound gave the referee an easy way out, and we know it’s an escape most referees would have taken. It’s ashame Mike Dean isn’t doing this game. :wenger:

The ref/linesman never signaled for an infringement therefore they never allowed play to continue on. It was simply fortunate that Newcastle were in position to regain possession and score.

It’s amazing the amount of goals Liverpool score from crosses yet you will hear people on here calling crossing football outdated and how our old school method of crossing football under Sir Alex would apparently not work now.

Yeah, but there's a difference between crosses of now and yesteryear.

Pumping crosses into the box(which the 2nd goal somewhat was tbf) versus drilled attacks ending in a cross or cutback from the full-back.

Did his arms go up to signal he was playing advantage?
I think it happened so fast he didn’t get the chance to do anything, but because the goal was scored he didn’t need to.

If the expert ref said the opposite to what the CAF wants to hear, they'd just disagree with him anyway.

Is Lee Dixon on MDMA? "I might start calling him Hendo because I...I just love watching Henderson play" etc.

No, the new rule is when it is a genuine attempt to play the ball.

If you rugby tackle someone for instance, that would still be a red card

But what does that say about the EPL when top sides are getting close 100 points but can't win the CL?

The PL has 2 representatives in the semi-finals (4 in the quarters) which is more than any other league involved in the competition.

That's hardly a poor showing.

So what advantage was he playing? The advantage of having a goalbound shot blocked with an arm bounce back to their possession?
I think if Atsu misses or the ball lands in a way where Newcastle can’t directly score then he gives the red and a penalty.

He has to disallow a perfectly good goal to give a red/penalty based on how the play turned out.

I remember the Barcelona v Arsenal game where Lehman got a red card and Barcelona given a free kick but they could have had a goal.

The referee messed it up big time or as usual letting Liverpool have the game .

If it was any other team but Liverpool, Benitez would be asking the officials why TAA wasn’t sent off.
But he won’t, because he’s a gimp.

I don't think he saw it. Then the goal got scored.

Move on with the game.

Could he not have given the goal and the red card?

I don't think he would he done because he didn't see it.

He'd have given a yellow 100% otherwise

There were rumours Rafa wouldn’t use his usual park the bus tactics against his beloved Liverpool. They have proven to be true. Newcastle are playing a suicidal open attacking game against a much better side. It feels like the fat Spanish waiter has set his team up to make this as easy as possible for Liverpool.
