Premier League Festive Season

How do you define where a player's arm/shoulder starts exactly? It's impossible to do this accurately up to 1 mm like they are trying to do here.

It will always be millimetres regardless of where you put the line. Push line forward and it pulls in the clear offsides we have now into the too close category.
Linesman always looked for millimeters, its just now we dont get mistakes.

I guess the Premier League better hope the majority are like you loving this VAR stuff, where perfect offside calls ensure nobody scores a dodgy offside goal.

Or get away with handballs in the box, fouls not seen etc.
So what happens if someone scores a goal a few millimeters from Pukkis goal? If Pukki didnt get an advantage then player x wouldnt have since its the same principle. Then what if another player is fractionally more offside next week?
At some stage millimeters will have to be called. At least this is an unpeachable stance.

Is it even 100% certain, that he was offside? Or is there a small possibility, that an other camera view can tell you something else?

It's not always millimetres though and that's the point, there was no advantage for Pukki with his shoulder being a millimetre ahead of Alderweireld's knee

If you look at each players feet then Pukki is well onside

I'm not blaming VAR I'm blaming the offside rule

Everyone is focused on the line, but what about the connection with the ball?

Say there is 60 frames-per-second, who determines which frame is selected for the ball contact?

I don’t see that ever being discussed. Seems everyone is focused on the line, shoulder being offside etc but the ball contact is just as important.

We are talking millimetres here but what technology is being used to analyse the very first contact with players foot to play the ball forward before the line is imposed on the screen.

Where? I love my phone way too much to do that
In the Norwich game.. it was pretty far from the crowd too..

Must have been an incredible throw.. or it came from some player or the ref..

Look at those lines... How do they even know that they are 100% straight?
How do they know where to put the reference line at the exact right spot on the body? In that picture it almost look like Toby's shoulder is even further down than his knee. Have they even stopped it at the exact right frame?
A tenth of a second later Toby is clearly lower than Pukki. The attackers advantage of that millimeter is clearly none existing.

Football should let AI make the VAR decisions and treat the system like tennis’ hawkseye me thinks?

These hairline offside goals being disallowed could all be resolved by copying the VAR strategy for offsides in Germany. I mean they've had 2 more seasons with the technology so why not just emulate them? Because the PL are so stubborn that they want to dictate how it's finally going to be used universally. Pathetic
What strategy do the Germans use mate?

It’s obvious, that’s why. When we’re shown a line on the telly we’re assuming that it’s done at the point the ball was played.

We arent seeing what thegy are! Sky doesnt broadcast in the resolution VAR uses.
Honestly think the exact stats should be stickied above every page in the VAR thread

The lines themselves are generated by a computer. They're right.

The exact point is, I'm not joking, done by hand. I agree with you that I'm not sure it's in the right place.

The VAR chooses from three frames the first frame in which the ball is played.

From the women's world cup:

"Virtual offside lines are superimposed on the broadcast image by computer software. Angle of view, lens distortion, field curvature and many other factors are considered when calculating the true position of the these lines. The lines will be calibrated before each match by the technology provider to take into account the exact pitch dimensions and conditions on the day. The VAR team will have various tools available for determining offside positions, which have been validated in a number of tests across different venues by an independent third party using survey grade equipment."

One imagines it is the same process in the PL in terms of ensuring it is calibrated correctly.

Totally undeserved. Unbelievable officiating in this game.

Come on Norwich, feck these guys up.
