Prem clubs lying about match attendance figures, City by 10k a match

Attendence is based on turnstiles surely. For health and saftey reasons any club would have to know the exact amount of people in rhe stadium at all times, no? I doubt the club would even get insurance at the ground without a system to manage the numbers.

Not the one announced in the stadium. Clubs know what go through the turnstiles and obviously have a record of that. But the attendance announced on the megaphone end of the game is the amount of seats paid for. There was some league cup game within the last 3-4 seasons announced at 70k when it was clearly evident max 50k were in the ground.

Statement from Manchester City:

Manchester City record various data sets in relation to the number of people inside the Etihad Stadium on a match day including fans, staff and contractors for operational and security purposes.

The attendance figures published by the club are based on ticket sales, both match-by-match and seasoncards, of which the latter sold out in record time ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

We are aware that a percentage of fans are unable to attend matches on occasion, due to a variety of factors often related to individual circumstance, and therefore provide an exchange platform so tickets can be re-issued.

Really interesting. Out of the top 6 the figures City and Chelsea are posting are laughable.

Good to see United's accurate and very high.

How sad is that. Inflating attendance figures to try and mask the fact that all the money in the world can't buy you fans.

'including..staff and contractors for operational and security purposes.'

Lads bring your wife and kids along to work, we need to bump the numbers up. Ask your wife if your girlfriend can come too.

An average of 7500 fans each game is a lot of people!
How do we know how much those ‘missing’ people were supposed to have paid as well?
A great way to cook the books!
7500 x platinum VIP tickets = No problem with FFP.

Jesus! Just looked and they do a £25000 ticket! That was back in 2014!

As a Mancunian season ticket holder, it's unbelievable that City fans actually believe the nonsense they spout about their fans and ours. This is lovely :D

Stats backing what's plain and obvious from viewing :D

The great late late sterling winner in front of a half empty stand last season was visible proof called fake news

The players go mental, the staff are on the pitch, guardiola is losing his mind, the title momentum builds......and it looks like a bloody league 1 game

City are pretending to be a big club so I can see why they do it. But West Ham? But of an odd one.

The City is yours
The City is yours
20,000 empty seats
Are you feckin sure?

Apart from home games against United and possibly Liverpool, there are always more than a few empty seats in the home end at City. Looks that way on TV anyway.

It's all mentioned here. Clubs announce official attendance as "tickets sold" - so if only 50k show up and tickets sold were 70k, it will still be announced as "attendance today of 70k". That's the money generated for that game.

Of course for health and safety they know who has gone through the turnstiles and how many is on site along with the police - they just don't announce it to the public as they go by revenue generated only. You can understand why they do it as it's money in the pocket whether people attend or not - just looks daft when it's clear 20k are not there

Yeah, all the day trippers at Old Trafford travel with plane and train so ..

I get fed up with the myth of the amount of United fans from Manchester.
I was born in 1970 in Salford and through the 70’s and especially the 80’s, there was VERY rarely a City shirt in sight on playing fields, in schools and around the city centre.
All my mates growing up were United fans. Only when I started going to pubs and clubs in the late 80’s did I meet a City fan and he was from Blakeley. His family were all City but when we went to his local, most in there were United fans too.

They, and by they I mean we, don't call it the Emptihad for nothing.
Biggest floodlights in the league...
How do the police get their figures?

Their attendance numbers are on PEDs

Maybe the stadium itself is inflated?

There are about two people missing in this thread.

This is what the Colombian clubs did when they were owned by kingpin drug dealers, to launder money :D

This us Bermuda triangle stuff, creepy shit, will make a nice horror flick?

Or at least a couple of new verses to the City Is A Massive Club song.

How often do you reckon 10-20k buy a ticket and don't go :wenger:

Can any Mancs confirm that all these empty seats mean it's easy to buy tickets to City's home games? That's the only way to know for sure that they're not selling out.

I did hear something about City going round local schools and giving free tickets away for a lot of games.
Anyone confirm this too?

I fully agree it was more of a joke that City fans are stuck in traffic while us Utd fans have to commute with planes and trains but still manage to show up on matchday.

This has happened a lot since the takeover. They've always struggled to fill the ground and it's no different today.

Anyone who thinks they legitimately sell out the stadium on a regular basis only for 10k to decide they won't turn up for one reason or another are deluded.

Just checked their online ticket office and there's seats available in most of the sections, on general sale, for the weekend game.

Not a manc but used to listen to Key 103 and City tickets were constantly advertised on there days before games. They give plenty of tickets out for free to schools and sometimes sell for as little as £10. City's support will definitely have increased globally but not the type who will go to home games week in, week out.

No matter the event, there is a 10% variance for people not attending due to everything from illness, to travel issues, to working etc. then when you throw in a league cup game in the middle of the week to Championship opposition - you factor in the people who just cant be arsed to go as well. A lot of the quota would be season ticket holders here thanks to the having to opt-in to cup games so they can apply for away games, for us anyway.

City I have no idea hoe their ticket schemes work.

Had a few friends that went to university there and regularly reported being offered heavily discounted tickets for City home games in the days running up to them. A few years ago mind, so not sure if they still do it.

Eh....I'm confused. So you're saying United zero variance is wrong ? No way old Trafford has 7800 empty seats every week. Games like Derby in a few weeks will be the exception.

No I'm saying you will always have no shows no matter the game or importance as shit happens. Rule of thumb is 10% for no shows for sports events and other things. That's the average rather than the norm. Some games it's less, other games it spikes. This includes away fans and corporate boxes as well though - it's not just the regular home match-going fan here, as that lot are included in the attendance as well.

I even heard a lot of United fans attend their games. If true, it's a nice gesture from us. Rent a fan for a day.
