Potential striker signings (who aren't named Højlund)

According to Romano Galatasaray are signing Icardi for €10m following his loan move there

He’s a name I hadn’t heard in a while so checked how he did last year and he scored 22 and assisted 7 in 24 games.

I know people will question his attitude but he knows where the goal is and could have been a decent experienced option alongside Hojland.

That's enough justification for us not to go there. We don't want another bad egg in the squad.

What's up with Jonathan David this summer ? If I remember it correctly, there was a lot of talk about him here this time last summer and he had an even better season after. Is there any source linking him with us again ?

His goal numbers are incredibly inflated by penalties. 24 goals in the league, and 10 of them were penalties. Both his non-penalty goals per 90 and xG per 90 is worse than Højlund's.

I see, fair point. Although I think there is more to his game than just goalscoring output. At this moment, it seems like it's Højlund or nothing for us this summer.

If we can get rid of Martial and get Hojland + loan Joao Felix (with option or obligation to buy) then I’d be ecstatic
Think people would be as frustrated by him as they currently are of Sancho. Not sure I'd touch Joao Felix with a bargepole on his current salary as he just doesn't have the output you'd expect for a player of his value/reputation and he's one of those 'tweener type players who isn't a pure volume creator like Bruno and KdB but isn't a prolific goalscorer either.

A kind of aesthetically pleasing floaty around type of player who'll score the odd banger but is either the first player pulled off in a tight game or is the one who comes on to be some kind of impact sub...but Atletico want €100mn for and he gets upset when he doesn't start.

Moussa Dembele (26) ex-fulham/celtic/lyon/atletico is available on a free. As we require a "experienced" striker, why would the club not look at him as a one-two season option?

If we get Kane on a free next summer then great, if not we still have a experienced striker and hojlund (inexperienced one).

I think we'd be better off playing Rashford as a striker and Garnacho on left

Without trying to sound like an ITK, when it comes to Moussa I am ITK! My pal is his lawyer (and part owner of FC Mansa - Moussa’s team in Mali)

His team have held talks with Utd this summer over a 2 year deal but he’s not high up on their priority list. One of those where it will be late on in the window and we haven’t signed anyone else then we would explore it, however he’s more than likely going to Saudi. Only 26, big money on the table and if it doesn’t work out, still another big contract in him.

Amazed we weren't interested in him or Thuram when both are now free agents

Some poster here said he had 3 bad matches in the WC and everyone thinks he's shit. Personally I'd agree with everyone since his team only played 3 matches in the WC.

Considering the current circumstances my bet on our new striker is MG or Hugill.

Oh, that's little bit unfair to him as their approach and tactics at WC were rather laughable and suicidal in a group that was pretty strong.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting him over Højlund or saying that he is good enough to lead our front line by himself, it just came to my mind how highly rated he was here a year ago.

Probably zero. The Athletic said we have about 100m to shop this summer. Mount and Onana in total already cost around that.
I suggest this thread is renamed "Potential striker signings (who aren't named Hojland)".

If the £100m budget and the Mount/Onana fees are to be believed, we can probably afford Hojlund's little toe with the remaining budget.

Given the trend for five letter surnames, I have a nasty feeling we will end up with Jonathan David as our new striker. Just so long as we don't go back in for Messi, Giggs or Pogba. Maybe Roy Keane would be a good shout as he knows how to handle Haaland?

Maybe tbh I haven't watched him so I'd take your words on this.

Yeah whoever we wants to sign now would cost us north 50m when teams know we absolutely need one. I have no idea who that might be but I bet ETH would love to find out asap. He has like 4 weeks left before the season starts. Then it seems we have no money left. And we really really suck at selling. It's depressing really.

Tell your mate to convince him to sign for a year at least. We need a competent striker and the fact that he's on a free is useful.

For a striker in his peak years, his last three seasons that been a bit hit and miss. 3 goals last year, 22 the year before, and only 1 the year before that.

If Hojlund was struggling for form and Martial was injured, I would rather make do with Rashford at 9 and Garnacho in the wing than rely on Dembele. We can't have another goal shy striker again, as nice as Weghorst was.

I think Vlahovic is the best value option available if we're not prepared to pay for Kane or Osimhen. Surprised we're not being linked to him.

He’d sign for Utd in a heartbeat. He’s low down on Utd’s list however. He’s only an option if he’s still available at the end of the window and we haven’t signed anyone higher up our priority list.

We wouldn't have such a striker issue if we had City's goal output (pre Haaland) but unfortunately that's not the case. I could see how Felix can work in that scenario but we just don't score enough to accommodate that sort of player

He's just not that good and I don't think he would be cheap at all. A large portion of his goals are from penalties or fks and he's unlikely to be on either at United. Personally would prefer any of the strikers we're being linked with and I have reservations about every single one of them to some degree or another.

What about Jovic, wasn't he meant to be promising at some point? Not cutting it at Real Madrid when they had Benzema there is hardly an indication he is a bad player. (Appreciate he may actually be shite, I just remember a lot of fuss about him a few years back and wondered if he was an option)

He's been at Fiorentina for a couple of years and hasn't lived up to potential at all.

Feels like we might have to go round in circles a few times in order to find that right one

Yeah surprised. Vlahovic at least has a track record going back a few years at a high level despite last season being a dip. Plus he's still young.

Consistently shit for 3 years straight and barely scored more open-play goals than Højlund, but somehow he's the better option. When are people gonna realise he's not a good striker?

Probably zero. The Athletic said we have about 100m to shop this summer. Mount and Onana in total already cost around that.

Some of that is FFP restrictions, and if we sell a homegrown player like Maguire and/or McTominay, that number shoots up. I think with sales, and a well structured deal, we are going to be able to spend 50-70m on a striker. But we’ll need to sell 2-3 players to make that happen.

It’s also worth considering savings in wages as we restructure the squad. Okay, we’ve added mount. His wages will be offset by a couple of departures. Fred seemingly likely to go for about 20m and Elanga 15m, also 35m added to the kitty. If Telles, Bailly and VdB can be sold (now getting some interest from SA) for a combined 15-20 (for all three), the war chest is up to 50-55m, plus whatever we had left. Then consider that Onana May cost 47mm or so but over a five year deal, the club is going to save approximately 50m on the difference between his and De Gea’s wages. Which is insane.

Transfers can also be done creatively. We can loan now with an obligation to buy in 12 months for 50-70m. Maybe adding 5m or so to the fee the for the privilege. Loads of big transfers have been done like this, including Mbappe. There are lots of options in the squad to raise funds through sales.

Bottom line is that I can’t see there being a serious impediment to making a big signing, unless we really have no creative juices at all.

We really really suck at selling. Plus with the takeover hanging it makes thing so complicated. Not that easy I'm afraid. We'll see.
