Get in!!!

Wolves were probably worth a point, but great to win a tight game like that.

Bailly brilliant. Matic even better...

But the elephant in the room is the lack of creativity from FB. It may look as though Pogba and Bruno were over-doing the straight chip over the top to Rashford... but it all stems from the unwillingness to roll it out to AWB... Absolutely nothing comes from him at all... he was put in acres of space over and over again, but not a single decent ball came in.

When teams defend deep, and congest the middle, we need another option from RB that can makes something happen
Our plan surely can't be to roll it out to our full back on the touchline and expect him to create a chance by himself? Even with good attacking full backs that's a big ask.

We need some sort of link up play and overload out wide. Very very rarely do we create a 2v1 out wide so we can get a clear cross in with runners across the 6 yard box and options for the cut back.

There was one time in the 2nd half Pogba got to the byline on the right and hit it near post to Cavani which the defender cut out. These are the types of moves that will get us goals if we do them consistently but large majority of the time the players look absolutely clueless as to how to go about creating a chance.

The fact we've brought in Telles who has a great reputation for his attacking qualities and we've managed to make him mediocre at best going forward suggests to me it's a cohesion and coaching issue rather than the blame going on individuals.

By the way
We need to give Mason a role for a few games. His confidence is shot. His man marking and tracking back is absolutely nil and he put us under pressure in the first half, so much so that Bruno had to overload constantly on the left to decrease the amount of pressure on the right.I hope he scores soon otherwise its just a case of second season syndrome

delighted those time wasting cocks got what they deserved.

We were as much to blame with that slow start - we didnt play with any tempo until the last 20. Not sure how much of that is down to Pogba/Matic but its a factor.

We need Liverpool to drop off a little still to win it. Just think we are lacking that bit of consistent quality in our front 3.

I wonder if this could be the catalyst for Martial/Rashford to take that next step up

anyway - enjoy the table and come on the Toon

So chuffed with those three points. Not enough speed in passing and moving the ball. Thought Wolves played well, making it difficult for us. Bailly was my MOTM.

Cant be overstated how important that win was, by hook or by crook.

Hate playing Wolves though. Super negative, cynical team that seem to have a bizarre reputation amongst the media of playing beautiful, attacking football.

De Gea was a MotM, very performances by Bailly and Matic as well. Strong substitute appearance from Luke Shaw, lucky goal, but unlucky not to earn a penalty for Wolves’ handball earlier.

All in all a fair result, and perhaps 4 points from 2 last games is what we really deserved

Really awful game, but I think Wolves paid for defending a 0:0 draw with 15 minutes to go.
Let's be honest we're not winning the league, but we're improving.

Might as well play youngsters then because we had next to no midfield today. This combination doesn't work, maybe rotate with different combinations to avoid this one?
Like whom? We don't have many other viable alternatives!
They work, it's just too slow to break teams down.

Same struggles we’ve had for the last few seasons, no width from wingers or fullbacks makes it difficult to break down these type of teams. Wolves got what they deserved though . Nuno becoming a mini mourinho without the criticism!

I feel like we make so many sloppy passes or fail to get in the right positions to receive a good ball.

It might just be because i'm a United fan so will naturally over criticise things but when I watch some other teams, they always seem to be in the right place at the right time, rather that depends on one players genius.

Anyway, a huge 3 points.Keep it up boys!

Oh that was horrible to watch until the jammy goal at the end. Well 3 pts is all it matters.

De Gea clearly saved a few. Bailly did well. Rest all were meh.

Come on man no need to look back like that. Were second in the league. Looking back will only kill us. If we get Sancho in, a quick quick RB and a CB we are in a very nice position. I don’t think Liverpool will hold up physically.

Yeah I know. It is what it is but it would have been nice to be going into the game with Liverpool level on points.

Hopefully a seminal moment for this team. We would have lost or drawn this match in other seasons. We ground out the win and got the 3 points we needed. It wasn't pretty but it was a champions performance in the sense that we got the win despite not being at our best.

Also feck Wolves, hate that team, they always play out of their skin against us.

Hate the way Wolves set up so negatively against us but also can't blame them for setting up so defensively having played Spurs just 48 hours earlier and missing their striker.

Not the best game to watch but also can't expect every team to play open football for us like Leeds United. 3 points and moving on.

Feels like an awful long time since I checked out our goal difference.

Spare a thought for the commentators, they’re completely distraught that this young, inexperienced Wolves side have lost the game. Bless ‘em.

To be fair the commentators spent a good five minutes talking about how this game wasn’t quite as awful as last year. But yeh, they love an underdog don’t they.

Pros:
  • Ole's tactical adjustments helped us in asserting ourselves in the 2nd half and getting the 3 points
    • Rashford dropping deeper to drag defenders away
    • Formation change from 4-2-3-1 to 4-1-4-1 on the attack (Bruno dropping deeper; Pogba pushing higher; Matic dropping back into a 3)
      • Pogba getting more of the ball due to Bruno being double-teamed often
    • Shaw coming on and improving our build-up from the left wing (and overall)
    • Martial coming on to link up attacking players and drag defenders away
    • Cavani roaming more to link up attacks
  • Keeping the playing style consistent and not getting frustrated
    • Composure when getting pressed on the flanks, allowing us to be more of a threat in the 2nd half
  • Good tactics
    • Cavani and Fernandes pressing midfielders to stop longer passes
    • Bailly in there to stop/slow down Wolves' counters and press attacking players coming deeper
    • Pressing on the flanks with Pogba and Bruno cutting out midfield options (not always executed well, but this improved in the 2nd half)
    • Tracking back from Greenwood and Cavani (in the 2nd half) to slow down Wolves
  • Composed defending when dealing with their counters
    • Credit to Bailly and Maguire for slowing down Wolves' counters and forcing them to break us down
Cons:
  • Lots of ball-watching from the midfield in the first half (less apparent in the 2nd half)
  • Lack of link-up between the midfielders and attacking players (less apparent in the 2nd half)
  • Sloppy execution (fatigue can explain this, but it was still apparent)
  • Wan-Bissaka
    • Slow to come forward
    • Took too much time on the ball in 1-on-1 situations
    • Got sucked in way too often to deal with the striker and left the opposing wing back open
MOTM: Maguire
  • Defensive composure
  • Astute positioning
  • Slowed down Wolves' quick transitions
  • Kept possession under pressure
  • Smart passing

Subpar performance by Bruno and still delivered a killer pass to the goal that won us the game.

I think he is the key for the title challenge. Even in his worst games he finds a way to change the outcome of a match

Thought it was a very good performance, seems to be against the grain.

Deserved victory. Can't do much against a team playing like that. They were very good.

Can we somehow reach an agreement where we never have to play Wolves again?

Seriously, at around 30 minutes into this game I just realised I had watched 30 minutes of football and yet couldn't draw one interesting memory, thought or conclusion from it... It just happened... And to be honest I'm not 100% convinced it did happen.

There is actual evidence that it did right?

AWB is so bad going forward, he never crosses, always just passes it back... he really needs to develop himself over the next year or I don't see why stick with him.

United need to score goals and he just passes back, the best chance from the right came when Pogba ran down the right wing.

There's absolutely nothing to the right side of attack.

Difficult game of attrition as it always is v Wolves, who were very, very solid defensively. It was an off day from everyone on our side in the attack but we persevered and got the result we wanted in the end.

I think with a lot of these games coming thick and fast for us this season, it all almost came to a head this game, but thankfully all's well ends well.

I disagree with people saying it was a systemic issue today, rather it was half of our team playing the full 90 in a hard fought match three days before and it told in the performance today. Lest we forget a lot of this XI were carving Everton apart this time last week, who were setting their stall out similarly to Wolves today.

I think as the season goes on, we as a fanbase will have to get used to such performances the further we go in the cups.

Absolutely hate playing these cnuts. The matches are always boring and usually end with a draw. Nice to win, don't care much about the performance.
Agreed. Fecking great three points. I voted Bailly MOTM, but after deep reflection it was 50\50, rand maybe Matic shaded it.

Very proud of the team. We were fighting to the end and we wanted to win much more than Wolves. Deserved win even though we were lucky in the end.

Wolves made it difficult for us, but that wasn’t a surprise. When a good team like Wolves go for a draw, it is difficulty for any team.

Happy to see the defence had very good control during most of the game. Think the back-four composition today is the best we have.

Greenwood did some good things, but in general struggles in these kind of games.

I think the performance today was ok or decent. Obvious that something is missing, but it’s very difficult to put the finger on the exact problem.

2020 has been a good year :)

Up to 2nd.

We didnt concede against a team that scored 2 against Chelsea 14 days ago and 1 against Spurs a couple of days ago. We were pretty boring going forward with our attacking players finding it difficult to break through against Wolves sitting back and defending quite well but we got a bit of luck at the end.

Not exactly a must see match but a good result and Wolves have some good attacking players so they must have fancied hurting us at some point

Great result, this Wolves team have got so many annoying draws against us. Feels like a big moment for us to push on.
