Post-match discussion

All things considered - it’s clear we’ve made improvements from last season.
I would’ve taken a draw at the start of the game, we lost to them all last season and they love to raise their game against us.

We conceded a wonder goal, and we missed a penalty - as well as 3 big chances that should’ve been capitalised, on another day we would’ve won by 2 clear goals quite comfortably.

We knew this season was going to be inconsistent while we rebuild our team, that means we have to expect frustrating points dropped such as this.

That seems like 2 points wasted, dominated the match for all but about 5 poor minutes.

Missed penalty and difficult to create clear chances with defensive block of Wolves and a no.10 who can't put the strikers through.
McTominay and Lindelof were poor and Lingard confirms that he has no technique, twice unmarked in the box before Wolves score and can't even manage to shoot. Almost comical but it's not funny any more, he's in our team.

We absolutely bossed the game for 70+ minutes, what game did you watch?

They scored a wondergoal and had a good 15 minutes, but other than that, we absolutely dominated them in every department and were very unlucky not to win.

Yeah like I said Wolves were terrible..
We had a lot of the ball, partly because wolves don’t particularly like the ball. How many actual chances did we create though? We defended well for the most part and martial and Rashford linked well but our midfield were poor and as a consequence we created very little.

We looked second best technically. Naive defending letting their outside of the box specialist shooter get a shot off.

What an earth was going on with the penalty?

We gave that game away from almost a winning position. Mata for Rashford I didn't agree with and the timing too. Not enough time for the subs to affect the game.

Absolutely fuming!

Ever wince Lingard misshit it off his knee and face, he cursed are hole attack.

That was one of the key moments that cost us 3 points. It was a wide open shot at goal and he completely scuffed it.

We need a player in that position who can score those goals and give us 15-20 a season.

Lingard is on his last chance this season imo. He needs to step up or risk getting replaced.

Good level headed post. Don't personally see a better option than Lingard though, thought he was a part of making us so solid and dominant in first half, although clearly no cutting edge. Don't think andreas or gomes would have done better.. and beyond that we have nothing

Not wrong especially in a game like this, but at the end of the day he doesn’t come near the starting 11 for any of the “Big 6” clubs, and if you want to maintain that status genuine quality on the ball (on a consistent basis) cannot be compromised. What a difference someone like Bruno Fernandes could have made playing in his role today.

They didn't have enough time, that's the problem. James and Lingard should have been taken off at half time. In fact at this stage Greenwood and Gomes should be given the chance. They were the main starters that held us back and we already know we have better players in their place.
I would have liked to see Greenwood given more time maybe around the 75' mark for either Lingard or James, but Mata looked done, not sure if just rusty or steep decline but at this point he's only getting picked ahead of others because of seniority.

Disappointing to draw but I think there's a lot of positives in the performance given it's one of the hardest places we'll go this season and we could have and probably should have won with us controlling large portions of the game despite neither Pogba or McT being particularly good today.

That said I think there were two main problems being that I think we need to play it out of the back quicker at times. The defence are good on the ball but they shouldn't get overconfident especially as if we do have to pump the ball forward we'll probably lose the physical battle. Just need to get the balance right so we don't put too much pressure on ourselves unnecessarily.

Then in attack we need to be quicker, our goals have come where we've sped up the play and players have actually run ahead of the ball. It's a continual theme with us where the players check too much and we lose the momentum. We don't have the players that we'll likely unlock a defence that's organised so once we do get the opposition out of play we need to maximise on it.

Again Lingard shows why he shouldnt be playing at this club.

Solid first half overall, bad second half.

Cant blame Pogba.

Wolves are a really good side, they step it up against Manchester too.

I do not blame Scott or Shaw. There is no way that a two man midfield is going to be able to handle a 5 man midfield for 50 minutes let alone 90 mins. When you are tired, your passing goes awry. This is not the team of SAF for Ole to think we can play the way he played under SAF.
I knew that the moment they scored we needed to change and I would have brought on Matic(Yes I do think he is crap) but he is the only option we have now to let Pogba move forward. Or even Jones into midfield but Jones is not disciplined enough to play in this midfield and I do not think he can be the DM. If we take Scott out Jones can play there. Lingard has done eff all today. Our strike force does not have the capability to hold the ball During the half time Giggs was talking about it and he is right. None of them can hold the ball. Not even Martial. We need a striker who can hold the ball. We should stop this nonsense of playing with dedicated wingers.

The blame should be on Solskjær on this one. Somehow Pogba is allowed to take the penalty when we know he’s inconsistent from the spot and Rashford has scored on all 6 penalties he has ever taken. He waits until the 81st minute before making a substitution, and chooses to sub in Mata, who I can’t remember ever making an impact off the bench, instead of players like Chong, Greenwood and Gomes. The fact that the subs were subbed in at the 81st minute and 2 x 89th minute makes it even worse.

How is nobody looking to pick up Neves at the edge of the box.

That's what stunned me most.
I couldn't believe it when I saw he was all alone there. Didn't he score an identical goal against us last year? Pathetic man marking.

Wolves are difficult to break down. Everyone knows that. They stay compact and just try and hit you on the break. Tonight we controlled the game and they had zilch bar a ragged 10 minutes post half time.

We were the better team and there's clear improvement.
I honestly think people see a lot of Portuguese players in the Wolves side and think they're a silky attacking side. They're probably the most defensive in the league.

Might have to do with us fielding 2 midfielders and Wolves 5. Making no sub before the 81th minute with our midfield dominated in the 2nd.

McTominay looked knackered, should have been replaced in the last 30. Especially with Wolves high press in the second.
I don't think that's correct, we field 3 more players, Rashford, Lingard and James were all supposed to be in the midfield area and help the ball out.

Lost the game to a bad 5 minutes where control was lost. Other than that it was a decent away performance. Subs were kept way too late though.

Result again flattering.

Said it before and will likely say it again: Against teams that can pass and have at least some sort of cohesiveness in their play we will struggle. We are only able to create dangerous situations by coincidence or individualistic action. And OGS and the gang are not competent enough to coach the 11 players on the pitch to operate as a unit.

Did you actually watch the game? I very much do not agree with your assumptions about the coaching staff.

what game were you watching?

Great performance, shit subs, poor penalty. McTominay probably the only player who was sub par of the starters though on balance. Message to Ole: get our best penalty taker taking penalties. And bring on some fresh legs before the 85th minute when the forwards have run their hearts out and we're chasing the game. And ideally those legs shouldn't belong to Mata as his legs can't remember when their best before end date was supposed to be.

Honourable mention to Jon Moss, what a cock. Him and Oliver can always be relied upon to ruin a game.

What are you on about 'almost conceding two goals?

They hit the post and scored a worldie from 20 yards. I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

And thats your problem. They were very close to scoring from a header off the inside of the post, and did score soon after.

If you think a team is very comfortable when they concede 1 goal and didnt concede another by a whisker, then you have the standards of a midtable team. Just about conceding 1 instead of 2 is okay for them. Not for a team with ambitions to be somewhere near the top teams

I agree (in general, still don't think we know a thing about bruno fernandes and how he would perform here). I think Ole agrees too... Our main links in final weeks of the window were for number 10s and not 7s or 6s.

Could easily see it rectified in Jan

I’d marked this match out to be able to judge where we stand compared to last season.
On balance we look a much improved side despite the result. Wolves are one of the most difficult teams to face in the league, particularly at the Molineux. Obviously our defense has improved, Maguire is such a calming influence and Wan Bissaka is an absolute beast (he can play a bit as well). Also thought Pogba produced a more mature display and was mostly effective. Martial looks at home in the no. 9 position. All in all plenty of reasons to be optimistic, top 4 definitely on the cards as long as we avoid too many injuries to certain players.

Clueless

Some posters are saying this is not a bad result considering we struggled against them in recent year. I don't know if this is the result of mediocore football we have been playing since Fergie retired and that mediocracy has finally set in to accept a draw vs wolves away as good result for Man Utd? Just wondering.

Don’t agree I thought GN spoke a lot of sense. Stupidity and bad decision making cost us the game
Carragher talked a lot of sense. He talked about the importance of there being a set order and why it matters. Neville was just shit stirring.

Pogba isn't good at all in penalties. Game 1-1 and why in earth he goes to shoot it? Rashford just scored from pen and did same against PSG 90+4 or so. He should take pens, not Pogba who isn't even second best in team. Frustrating.

e. And even when Pogba have scored from pen, he have looked uncertain.

Luke shaw is a terrible left back. Martial is not a target man. Lingard is burnley level.

I'd say that even if we won.

I think we will struggle against a lot of teams that don't leave much space for us to exploit, which will going to be most of teams we play against. We simply lack creative players, having JLingz as the man to create goals just makes it worse. We know we can be decent while counter attacking but creating something against teams that sit deep is another story.

I think its more the fact that he has a decent record recently and he scored one last week. He should've took it. Obviously not a guarantee that he would've scored, but very strange he didn't take it.
Agreed - don't know if you are watching it but Neville and Carragher are losing it over what happened which seems strange.

It's a shite result, but you can't compare Wolves during Fergie's time to Wolves now. Context is key, you can't just remove all of that to suit your narrative.

Yeah i did, thanks. I said same old when we CONCEDE. We were great first half, i just said that. We had two shots on target so wasn't exactly peppering their goal. Again, the first half was great but when we concede we lose our composure. It gets to us easy. This is a mentality issue.

The second half was not good.

Have to disagree that we lose our composure. It didn’t take us too long to win a penalty after we conceded. The lads took back control of the game quite well.

You’re always going to have a spell of pressure against Most teams away from home. Only criticism is we failed to take our chances this time and wolves scored a worldie.

I would also say we could/should have had more that 9 shots with our 65% possession. Having rashford on the left wing has never really worked. He can’t create from that position. Needs to play centrally

Two points dropped in my opinion.
Manager needs to designate a penalty taken and it should not be Pogba.

Real shame we didn’t win. It’s not the end of the world though. Considering we lost there last year, we’re improving for sure.

Need to learn from this.

Everybody knows we're not the finished article, so we can't get all hysterical when we get a result as a consequence of not being the finished article.

The positive is that we would have lost that game last season, and that we have 4 points from two fixtures where we got 1 last season.

We can only hope that the penalty miss can be a springboard for something more positive, namely Pogba wanting to repay us and his team-mates for his miss, and that by his manager and team rallying around him, he steps up for us.

First half was a level of control I've not seen from us in a long time away from home. Second half the biggest worry was how a tactic as simple as putting a modern day Stuart Ripley (good player, but a bit dated for the modern game) on really but us under the cosh due to our left-backs inability to deal with him.

We're progressing slowly, and things like tonight are all part of the process.
