satisfied result. first half performance was like LVG boring football, fortunately big Felly managed to score a goal. 2nd half performance was great. nice assists from Martial and that 3rd goals is beautiful counter-attack goal. Mikhi is my MOTM, very good performance. and hopefully TFM injury is not too serious and he get other chance again.

Man, that Wigan player's name is
Max Power.

MAX POWER.
Max Power...Will Grigg...Nick Powell...There's something about Wigan's players' 3-syllable names that gives them a good ring...

Trying to be a journo? Listen..on the cafe.....after a game..it's probably better not to write too much, even though it's well thought out. It's just...well..we won...and people will just read short stuff..probably because they are having a beer or well.....doing something... we just can't read too much. Tomorrow yes.....

This was a confidence building result, especially in the final third. Let's hope we continue the vibe into the weekend.

Very happy with that! I know it's just Wigan but that 2nd half performance was such fun considering the shite we endured the other day against Hull.

That 3rd goal was lovely.

Happy Martial showed what he can do. Nice to see BFS score. Hoping for a good draw in the next round.

I will say this, though, that I didn't expect Jose Mourinho to substitute a keeper out for another keeper just for minutes. Then again, he did work under van Gaal at Barcelona, so I can see where he got inpsired.

The first half was awful but in the second half we were fantastic. We upped the tempo and the players started to get some confidence.

I don't know how you've all managed to be wrong. But you have.

Either I'm racist for thinking that Martial was Mhiki, or you're racist for thinking that I shouldn't confuse those two players. But I'm not sure which, too confused.

On another topic - since when did crosses start being described as 'route one' or 'long balls'? Is it simply since Klopp's comments after the Liverpool game?

I thought Basti was MOTM, he really bossed the midfield and also brings the same calmness and intelligence as Carrick.

Another thing i noticed about having a Carrick/Basti at the base of our midfield it helps Smalling to just concentrate on defending and not worry about passing or coming out of defence with the ball.

This result is great; wont get slated for disrespecting the cup because although we did rotate lots, our 4th string midfield is BFS so nobodys gonna complain there. On top of that, Jose gets to actually disrespect the cup by subbing keepers, and still winning 4-0, whilst fielding a weakened team. Subbing keeper when theres time left is the epitome of taking the piss. Loved it all

Jose looks like he hasn't slept for a fortnight.

That would be the slowest 'base' in the PL. while I like him, he's way past his best and should only be considered a sub if we're winning 4-0.

First half we were dreadful and were very fortunate to go in ahead. Much better 2nd half but still abit loose in possesion.

Can't argue with a 4-0 win though.

No it's Martin Keown being a dick

Tbf, Martial does seem to somehow morph into Mikhi at one point whilst Mata has the ball. It took me a few watches to figure out why.

Obviously not both together, i think we can use Basti as cover for Carrick in some games.

Very fortunate?? I recall one decent long range shot from Wigan and some good defending but 'fortunate?'

In reality we were in a bit of a slump coming in to the game after the let downs of the Liverpool, stoke and hull games and you could see in that first half we weren't at our best. We really played ourselves back into form in the second half though, hopefully confidence back in the squad now.

Good result considering the team and other results this weekend...but Jesus H smalling looks so awkward on the ball. If it's not a straightforward pass with his right he has to completely readjust his whole body...accident waiting to happen every game

Agreed , but together most teams would walk through our midfield. He has something to offer this season but I'd love to see Pereira back from Granada next season

Jose's errand boy in fine form tonight.

First half was dreadful. I think the lack of legs really showed with Bastian, Fellaini and Rooney central against an energetic Wigan pressing the ball. We made them look better than they actually are.

The Fellaini goal, while by no means pretty, settled us in though and I felt we were more liberated thereafter. I think the main adjustments that Mourinho made were for Martial and Miki to stay wide to have a go at them, and for Bastian to carry the ball forward more centrally, and it worked, we looked way more fluid and dangerous in the second half.

Pretty obvious over the last few weeks that rotation is hitting the progress we had been making. When we had a consistent 9 players, they started to read each other, and that led to some consistency. Rotation may be needed, by wholesales changes is probably not the way to go.

Not sure that Shaw took his chance to impress, been out a long time, so probably not surprising. Martial, Shwienie and Miki grew into the game. Thought Rooney just went through the motions. Smalling still lacking confidence, which leads to the back line being insecure. I would stick with Jones and Rojo, until Bailly is rested, and then see if him and Rojo can build the same level of understanding as Rojo and Jones.

Fellani and Mata always show what they are good at, and what their weaknesses are.

Next round, away to some premier team would be nice.
