Post-match discussion

I think 4 games in 11 days showed in that second half, I suppose that’s what happens when you don’t rotate that much (or can’t rotate due to lack of quality?).

Dalot, Martinez and Rashford immense. Benrahma constant threat for them and Dalot dealt with it impeccably. He was sniffing danger out everywhere.

Thought the Scamacca high foot on Martinez was atleast a second yellow, elsewhere on the pitch it surely would be, he jumped for it?

All in all, massive 3 points, all in the right direction at the moment.

Course it can but from the attacking team if you dont score its bad finishing.

what? not it's not. Amazing saves are by nature saves of shots/headers that were bloody good and wouldn't have been saved by most keepers out there.

How can there be no middle ground? An excellent shot and an ever better save are things that very often come together in a football match.

So Rices effort was a bad finish? I’m struggling with this I’ll be honest
If you shoot at goal anybody that is and dont score whether its a save over the bar just past the post, etc its bad finishing. It cant be anything else.

David had his best game in years. Sweet three points if nothing else.

Two goals conceded in last 7 games.

Penalty at Chelsea and a worldly form Iwobi. It certainly seems like we’ve stop conceding shite goals on a match basis

The sort of game where we just have to take the three points. The entire defence were exceptional, including Maguire despite some shaky first half moments where his lack of speed was exposed, and De Gea was even better. Rashford scoring more headers is a massive plus too, as I always believed that it was his biggest weakness and the largest hurdle that he had to overcome in order to be world class.

If you have a shot on target and the goalie saves it its poor finishing. If you score its good finishing. It cant be anything else.
This is one of the craziest things I've read on here.
You could hit the same great shot at 2 keepers, the great keeper might save it but the crap one won't but its still the same shot by the striker

Tbh, this is only one of those super crazy things many throwing onto you. You lose no matter if you use logic or not.

Obviously a goal might have changed my mind entirely on this, but today felt like one of those backs to the wall performances/periods in a game where you can tell how well the team is being coached, rather than being a heroic, last ditch type of showing where it’s all based upon the desire of the players and, at times, luck. There was plenty of that, too, but mostly it was being where they should and not getting isolated.

The system today looked predictable. In a good way. You knew what would happen, by and large, when the ball went into the channel between the centre half and the full back. The player defending the back post was doing so while goal side and in touch with his centre half. There seemed to be a lot of talking out there. As soon as we were overloaded down each side you could see the midfielder try to close off that channel and everyone move one across. This might seem like basic stuff for some top teams, but we haven’t seen it in a long time. Players know what their job is and how it affects the players around them.

Famous last words and all that, but I think we might be on to something here.

Posters here are seriously underrating the quality of Maguire’s game today. I think there are some people allowing their negative feelings about Maguire (and Ronaldo who also played pretty well today to more recent performances) to impact their view of today’s performance. Maguire certainly was instrumental in ensuring the clean sheet.

To the few on here. If you shoot at goal and dont score is it good finishing? Because to the few on here who is arguing for it then you have a different view on football than the majority.

DDG was immense today, Martinez and Dalot too. Surprisingly Maguire was competent enough today.

Theur keeper saved a lot today, if not for him, it should have been at least 3-0

Great to get another win. It was a performance straight out of last season really, didn't play well but scored with a moment (great header from Rashford) and held on thanks to the heroics of De Gea. Only difference is last season we likely wouldn't have held on.

Maguire defended his box well but we proved once again we are 100% a worse team with him and Ronaldo starting games.

I actually thought martinez or dalot could of easily won MOTM as could de gea because his saves were crucial and got us the 3 points… however when an attacker scores the winning goal in a game there’s only 1 player there giving MOTM to.

It always puzzles me how managers feel they deserved something when they lose. Yes deGea had to make 2 saves - and Bowen had an effort blocked by Maguire - but Fred hit the post, and they should have had a player sent off in the first half. We were horribly sloppy - if we hadn't been, we would have put the game to bed much earlier. So I just dont see West Ham deserving that much.

Love a gutsy 1-0 every now and again. These are season definers when all is said and done. Surviving these usually translates to 8-10 points over a season, and we look increasingly adapt at grinding these out.

Missed the game. Good to hear Maguire performed well. We need all hands on deck.

Good result and it was always going to be tough. Biggest game of Moyes's season and he always throws the kitchen sink at us, Ronaldo gives our midfield zero outlet, and Maguire invites pressure with his passing.

He was his usual self. Fish out of water in the back line when it came to passing and positioning, which meant we were pinned back to our own box, where ironically he was in his element and could save us with some good last ditch tackles amd headers. Overall, hard to see a way back into the team for him. He doesn't possess the skills ETH requires.

Huge W!

Thanks DDG, Dalot, Martinez and Harry.

I wish it was Garnacho over Elanga. Elanga just does not have the technical skills yet.

Bruno can be so daft at times. I was sure they would score after that horrible late give away. I love the guy but what the heck.

I struggle to understand the use of words like 'dreadful' and 'awful' used for games like that.

Barring the last 15 minutes, we had them right where we wanted them. Just missing the second killer goal.

We were a bit sloppy in possession and made some bad decisions in injury time that nearly cost us, but fortunately our defence did their jobs brilliantly and won us the match.

This. Nothing wrong with with 1-0 while not playing near our best . Plenty of grit and determination shown from the men in red good to see.

Was at Wembley for the NFL so missed the game today. Going by the highlights, it looks like we battered their goal but couldn’t score more than 1. They only had chances in the 2nd half in which the game should have been well out of sight by then.

Overall, another 3 points and clean sheet. Job done.

People should take into consideration who we are playing against - West Ham do not lose big. It's that simple - it doesn't happen. I had to go back almost exactly 2 years to find the last time West Ham lost by more than 2 goals in a competitive match. And during those 2 years - they only lost by 2 goals something like 5-6 times. West Ham are so organized - they never lose big. Jonas Olsson (former WBA-player) described West Hams gameplan against big teams as "hang in there for 75 minutes" - and then gamble everything in the last 15. That's what happened today.

To those who argue that we did not deserve to win, that at best we deserved a draw, you fail to account for the fact that our keeper made key saves. There were no horror referee decisions, except the failure to send off Scamacca for an obvious second booking, no sketchy deflection and nothing unlucky about West Ham’s failure to score.

Job done.

Great header from Rashford. Encouraging to see him develop that, which was previously unheard of really.

Shaw good, Dalot good, Martinez MOTM, Eriksen OK, otherwise a pretty nothing performance. Relieved to get the win. Excruciating seeing Maguire captain this side. Thought he was the obvious odd man out in our build up. Needs moving on.

Elanga, I like his character, he's just nowhere near good enough technically.

I agree with the second poster. Don’t get me wrong, i rated Maguire at 8/10 today, because he was instrumental to getting us 3 points. In my view though, he had a game of two «halves». When we were the best team, for the first 60-70 minutes at least, he was not very good. His passing was average at best, and he always invited pressure when on the ball, slowing down our play, and bringing some uncertainty to the back line.
However, when we were not the best team, he was probably our best player. He won the aerial duels, blocked shot attempts, made good tackles etc. I don’t see a way for him back to the starting 11 when Varane is fit. I don’t know if its his mentality, or something else, but i doubt its gonna work out for him here. I think both parties are better off if we go our separate ways.

Thought we played well overall, barring a nervy 15 minutes at the end that had me a bit worried. We seemed to tire as the game neared the end and passing became a little sloppy as a result, with some rather easy turnovers in possession.

Dalot, De Gea and Martinez played great. Like others said, Maguire on the ball makes me incredibly nervous. But in that final 15 minutes, he was very much needed.

Thought Rashford was good in the first half. Worked hard, was poor with a few chances but powered that header in really well. Didn't think much of his second half performance. Not sure how Neville managed to make him MotM.

Some really determination in the lads to grind out that last 15 and that is great to see.
