CL L Champions League Group B

VfL Wolfsburg 3:2 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Great game of football. And we played some lovely stuff going forward. But the result and the consequence of going out of the CL is a very poor one. Our defending was calamitous at times, and we need to now sit down and figure out how to find the balance between solid defending and the attack we've seen in these last two games. If we can find that balance, we've got a proper team somewhere.

Strange feelings. Gutted about the result, but I don't think I have enjoyed a game of football as much this season. What an emotional rollercoaster this was.
Suppose this is how it feels to be a Spurs fan.

I'm just shellshocked really. What a mad rollercoaster of a night this was.

I definitely agree.

United 1-0
Wolfsburg 1-1 (3 mins later)
Wolfsburg 2-1

CSKA 1-0
PSV 1-1 (3 mins later)

United 2-2
Wolfsburg 3-2 (2 mins later)

PSV 2-1

Incredible!
What a crazy game. Great game from the younger players out there.

(In regards to the crazy rollercoaster this matchday was:
I was hoping for Gladbach to progress at the same time who needed Sevilla not to win, or in case of a Sevilla win they needed to win at City.
Sevilla Juve was 0-0 after the first half.
City went 1-0 up against Gladbach but Gladbach equalized and then took the lead themselves.
Sevilla went up in the second half and were hanging on for dear life.
Gladbach at the same time were also hanging on for dear life and in the 80th minute City equalized deservedly. 6 minutes later it was 4-2 to City.
Juve hit the crossbar and missed golden chances in the last minutes.
That was also an incredibly tense affair, sadly Gladbach is now 4th.)

An enthralling game with some really odd moments in there. I'm glad we went out swinging but it did seem to be a strange (some may say desperate) lurch in style from LVG. From the controlled, slow football we've mostly seen in the last 18 months to today's 90's PL revival approach.

The youth seemed to bring a lot more energy and tempo to the game but sadly we didn't have the calm, elder heads to temper such enthusiasm.

The Powell sub was incredibly left-field. Shall I bring on the young #10 (Perreira) that has been on the bench for the last month? No, I'll bring on that guy that just came back from fitness who hasn't played for a year or so and that Joyce recently deemed to be lacking in fitness/sharpness.

Memphis seems to have cottoned on to what it's all about which is probably the best thing to come of the last two games.

Losing against better team like Wolfsburg is no shame, but 1 point over two games vs PSV, who I believe are shit, is criminal.

Totally agree with this.

Shades of 2005.

I'm not disappointed about losing this game, the PSV game is what killed us. We've been unlucky(?) with injuries, and this was an awfully young team, with the more experienced players letting us down: BFS, Fellaini, Mata...

Yep, that killed us. Win that, and you're there.

It's a bit of a toss up who had the crapper return to the champs league, us or Pool last year. In their defence they at least had a giant.

we had nothingness.

probably for the greater good we didn't scrape through and get a beast in round 2.
It'd either be a thrashing, or a sheer battle down the hatches Moyes v Bayern job

To be fair, if you look at our team (man for man), aside from DDG, Smalling, Bastian, Blind and Martial, we are average and I think LVG has done a decent job in getting us to joint 3rd in the league.
In the CL - had we played like we did today, we'd probably have won both games against PSV.

And DDG is absolutely our best player.
And regarding our striker situation, IMO we will need to spend £200-£250M on 2 strikers in the Summer. And yes, I do mean breaking the World record twice.

Can you imagine had we got through and met the likes of Madrid?

We would be destroyed.

Count our lucky stars we are out now instead of fooling ourselvez.

maybe, but people said that in Fergie's last season v them, and Moyes v Bayern.

What it'd most likely have been was an embarrassing minnow v giant type defensive bus parking, unbefitting a club of our stature.

Let's stick with LVG and his remit to keep us in the mix. Only 18 months to go and we await the new "philosophy". It was entertaining tonight mostly for all the wrong reasons though.

Fair play to the kids though. Varela looks a real prospect and CGJ too. Those two showed no fear at all. Memphis grew into the game and Lingard livened up in the second half. Powell was outmatched and, to be fair, he had nobody to help him out. Our much-vaunted defence was a shambles. Smalling looked sick or injured from the start. He was slow and lost his man far too easily for their first. Darmian offers precious little in attack and Martial really needs a partner.

Very impressed with both Varela and CBJ. Btw what has LVG said in his post match presser?

We seemed to play 4-3-3 again tonight and I thought we looked really lively, that first goal was well worked and exactly the sort of goal I expected us to score under LVG.

Then came the crazyness.

2 awful set pieces we've conceded, and Darmian having a shocker has lost us this game.

I think we attacked very well tonight though, but we clearly need midfielders who can beat a man and carry the ball forward, Herrera would have thrived tonight and injuries really are costing us.

We had so many close blocks and nearly goals tonight, with CSKA scoring the penalty I thought our luck might be in, then they go 1-1 and we equalise, then throw it away within 1 minute again!. We must be mentally weak because this is happening too often.

On the plus side our young players played very, very well tonight. Varela worked his absolute socks off and Borthwick-Jackson was composed and looked great in possession, what a big game to come into!.

I am very disappointed but reluctantly accept we would have been stuffed by Bayern/Barca/Madrid anyway, so maybe going out now isn't the worst thing ever.

Chris Smalling being injured really put the icing on the cake, I think he strained his groin which has been a little problem for him, he's going to be out for a good few weeks. I really fear what we will do without him!.

This is a very young team, and we really need to add more QUALITY to the mix. Another attacking midfielder who can actually dribble with speed would be nice, and of course a pacey winger.

That was much much better though in terms of effort, if only we tried that hard against PSV at home, we wouldn't need to be worrying right now.

That was fun! Glad our fans who demand Proper entertainment finally got what they wanted!

I'd have settled for a boring 0-1 win but that was never going to happen with the injuries we have right now.

Defencsive nativity cost us throughout the game and I had the feeling Wolfsburg would always up the gears and score when they needed to.

Our finishing in front of goal is appalling. Unlike most fans I can't blame LVG for this ... The front players have to deliver.

In hindsight it's gracious we go out now as we would be humiliated against Madrid or Munich

If we'd have played like that earlier in the group tonight wouldn't have mattered

Nice to see us actually take risks but all too little too late. Frustrating

I think we got what we deserved for not finishing the job earlier.

Showed some nice attack but looked terrible at the back. Injuries did not help. Did we see tonight the reason why LVG makes us play using a more conservative approach?

Disappointed but not unexpected. Changes must be made.

I think we missed Schneiderlin big time tonight. Having him instead of Fellaini in the middle would've been a big plus, we were getting torn to shreds as soon as they pushed up.

I really hope I never have to watch another game where Fellaini wears the Utd shirt, but I know that's wishful thinking.

This place is pretty fecking bizarre. Great performance? Unlucky? Entertaining? No no and no.

It all adds up to a loss. How can anyone here say with a straight face that they dislike 1-0 and 0-0 matches? Cuz most of those end with wins and draws.

Anyway. I'm not too fussed with this. This was never the year to focus on winning the CL. Get back next year and do better. Now focus on the league and some new players who can actually finish, and not kick a ball directly into defenders.

Fantastic entertainment, great play from our 2 very inexperienced fullback. But we were tactically naive, no midfield protection, the Mata/Powell substitution was bizarre, and Lingard for me should not be in the situation of being an automatic starter. The quality in the squad with this investment is so low, it's almost criminal negligence with the amount spent.

Rio making some great points post match

Both him and Owen are talking absolute bollocks about how all their mates are better than this lot of very young players. They even mentioned Cleverley FFS! And players like Vida who'd decided to go before LVG got here.

Is it just me or is Michael flipping Owen actually talking sense...have I lost it?

for all the money we spent. the midfield is still crap. The squad is very thin and poor.

Are you watching bt sport? Owen Scholes and rio just listed the players lvg let go. The team it makes is probably better thsn the team we now have...

No it wasn't. Most of them are past it, one of them was Cleverley and some of them weren't even players LVG let go!

He was before, about 4th place not being good enough.

The talk about the players LvG has let go beating the current United is nonsense though. And saying only Smalling and Carrick would get into an 11 of players he has let go. De Gea?! Martial? All our central midfielders are better than Cleverley and Anderson. And he also mentioned Vidic. LvG didn't release Vidic.

I can't understand how some are saying we played well tonight and are unlucky to be out. Wake up lads.We got exactly what we deserved, nothing.
We are a mess, we have spent badly. We have chosen our manager badly.
Barring a signing of Cantona proportions in January we are in for another trophy less season and a grim struggle to finish 4th.
We need to get our next managerial appointment right.

On MUTV they are saying the Premier league could lose places for Europe, 4th spot might not be good enough for next seasons.

Is that classed as Christmas defending?? :D;)

No it wasn't. It was mates talking about mates. Most of them are past it, one of them was Cleverley and some of them weren't even players LVG let go!
Yeah, apart from Nani and Rafael none of those players mentioned deserved to stay (Januzaj doesn't count)
