I'll happily take results over performances until Ten Hag is able to build a team capable of playing the kind of football he wants. We really need a De Jong type player.

Winning is everything to build some confidence in some of those players who have been at United a long time and look broken. Well done to the team today.

Cheers, it’s the second replay I like (looking back). Martinez isn’t going to pull out of ANYTHING and same as Liverpool game, excellent at walking that fine line between physicality and stupid refs.

Only been here five minutes and already really like him.

(edit, watching again, looks like Adams does a little mid air flick of his boots at Martinez)

Yes and yes. Another day we would have lost but today we won. We had more possession and more shots on target. Despite being happy to sit on our lead for the last 30 minutes. This wasn’t a smash and grab.
Right. I like your optimism. In my yes there was no difference to last season or the last decade. If you don't see it, thats too bad.

We need a centre forward who can lead the line. Rashford hasnt got enough sand for it. Martinez is looking like the player we've been lacking in defence though. Malacia is comfortably settling in ahead of Shaw as well.

A very important result.

- Until Bruno scored I was really upset with his play. It seems like 50% of his passes are either not accurate or not with the right pace. This just shouldn't be with an AM with his pedigree.

- We need a striker even if Ronaldo does stay. Rashford is so poor as a striker it's a joke. He doesn't know when to make runs and when to provide support. He doesn't know how to hold the ball up - so tired of his back heels and flicks that never work.

- Casemiro looked good in just 15 minutes. Got to start.

- Dalot seems to be getting worse each match. Maybe it's time to give AWB a try with ETH's coaching.

- I don't think Bruno rolled on the ground once this match. There was one moment I was sure it was going to happen in the first half and I was surprised. Maybe ETH has influenced him. I sure hope so.

- Why didn't we take the ball down to the corner at the end instead of trying to score?

Well done lads, let's build on this and create a solid foundation for bigger goals in the future.

Credit to your eyes if they can analyse a single game and compare it to a whole decade’s worth of matches.

I see very little difference between today and umpteen tough, scrappy away wins over the years. Including seasons where we won the title. Not every match is easy. There will be plenty more like this in the future. Best not to lose all hope every time.

Good performance. Some of you still exist in 2005 when you could walk through 15 of the 20 PL teams without breaking sweat. League is much more competitive now, all away games are tough.

Biggest issue is ball progression in this game, gave the ball away cheaply

Think he still wants players bringing in. Good players as well. I am glad he is not just accepting any old rubbish to keep fans happy. He knows who he wants.

Delighted with that, massive win for the confidence it will generate. Not vintage but battled well throughout as a team.

I don't think Dalot is the long-term answer obviously, but there's no way AWB pulls an assist like Dalot's today. Obviously Dalot hasn't been lights out, but that AWB isn't getting a sniff so far this season is everything you need to know about what ETH thinks of him.

Elanga rolled on the ground for the whole team in the first half.

Ground out a result which last season wouldn’t have happened.
Good defensively a bit toothless attacking wise but ill take these types of performances as long as we get the wins and allows ETH to slowly turn into the type of team he wants us to be.
This could genuinely be a great season for us if we can get a few more players in for CM RW ST RB

Battled to a win without playing particularly well. The defence were great again, especially Martinez.

Could've played better, but at least we won an away game. Also definitely should've scored in the first half. That scramble in the box ffs, Eriksen should have definitely put that in the net. A lot of work yet to do for ETH but I take an ugly win all day. Thought De Gea looked good too, might be just coincidence but he looks more confident without Maguire in front of him.

ground out a win , which I'll take at this moment. A basis is being put down to build on. Casemiro looks like a Rolls Royce. We desperately need a good 9; rashford is so much better on the left wing, sancho on the right. Credit to So'ton, their defenders were pretty good, quick and courageous - and young.

Kicks out at him by pretending to roll about.

Looking hard to play and score against is a good start. Pretty happy with that. Think were pretty desperate for reinforcements up front.

Hard fought game and always is down there. Looked a bit of a struggle at times, should have scored in 1st half. Saints threw balls into box from throw ins and set pieces in the main.
The CB dealt OK with it, some sloppy passing though but recovered the mistakes, last season they wouldn't have.
3pts we take games coming up thick and fast now

I can see why we are getting linked to attacking players, Rashford and Elanga are as much use a chocolate teapot. In the first half I had to check the team sheet to see if Rashford was even playing, he needs to change career and try he’s hand at being a magician as he’s disappearing act is second to none. We got the result snd our defence looked strong again, Malacia is a beast and I can see why they call Martinez ‘The Butcher’. On to the next one we go…!

It will improve once Casemiro finds his feet and haven an attacking front three of Sancho Martial and Anthony. We badly need a new right back as well.

Martinez went to ground a little rashly when one of their strikers was on the spin. I love him, but some strikers are going to try to win pens off him through their positioning and making body contact with him. A brilliant start to life in the PL, as with strikers who start by scoring it will be interesting to see how opponents evolve their tactics against him.

I don't think the pitch helped with the flow of the game tbh. Happy to walk away with a solid defensive performance and a good goal. Likes of Rashford and Elanga need to do better.

Say what you will but like it or not it was a step in the right direction

defenders that actually want to defend !

Ronaldo is finished, if we had a striker that would help. It’s hard to build play around rashford because he has no back to goal game at all

Wasn’t pretty but it’s a process. You can still see we’re light in the CMs, in possession we hopefully will improve a lot but defensively we’re far better than we were a few weeks back.

I was in a crowded place; sound turned down. Missed most of what happened after we scored. Fantastic assist and finish. Looked fairly comfortable from what I saw, defended solidly. I didn’t see Casemiro or Ronaldo. McT played well: Rashford seemed clueless, unaware of play around him. I thought he tuned in against Pool. But he’s gone again. AWOL.

A much needed away win and a clean sheet. We sort of have reverted to a more passive style for now i.e. playing slightly lower line, triggered and slightly low frequency pressing instead of a consistent aggressive one, not being insistent on always playing from the back etc. This has cut out the vulnerabilities and opportunities for mistakes that we saw in the first two games and helped us be more solid defensively. Hopefully, this helps the team grow in confidence and with time we see more of a proactive supposed Ten Hag style.

With a new manager and system in mind, if I’d
had to guess before the season started, we have drawn or maybe even lost to Brighton, probably drawn with Brentford, or maybe snuck a win, lost to Liverpool and beaten Southampton (though if that direction of travel had occurred we could even have been in trouble today). So my best case scenario was 7 points and even after the first two games being lost, we’ve ended with 6. It’s nothing to moan about, really.
