Southampton 0:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

It was not perfect, far from it, Southampton probably deserved at least one point, but no reason to moan about it.

  • First away win in EPL since Leeds in February 2022.
  • Two wins in a row in EPL for the first time also since February 2022. ( Brighton H + Leeds A ).
  • First clean sheet away from home in EPL since December 2021. ( Norwich 0:1 ).

We are also looking pretty decent at the back last two games and defense is where you need to start building foundations to move forward. Martinez is an absolute rock, love him. Glad for Dalot, very good assist. Anyone still preferring AWB over him has to be blind, no way he would pick that pass in that exact situation.

I love Ronaldo, but either he is finished at this level or just wants to leave and doesn't care. Or he was playing injured and refused to go out, which I highly doubt. Shameful performance from him, by the standards of both him and the club. Terrible on the ball and put absolutely no effort without it, despite one sliding tackle when he came on. Passenger watching everyone around playing a game of football and battling while he is waiting for.. what, perfect situations without pressure ? I just feel uncomfortable seeing him on the pitch, same as Maguire and AWB, I was so happy he didn't start in the absence of Martial.

Hard game as expected but I'm happy with the dedication of the team and 3 super important points that we can now carry momentum. Casemiro needs to start next game and Martial needs to come back. I like the kid but at this point, Elanga just is not good enough.

Ten Hag is a lot more pragmatic than many gave him credit for. Big win. Still a lot of issues in the team but he seems to be fitting his tactics to the players he has. May be a slog until he manages to get the technical players he wants

Get. In. There.

Sometimes you have to win ugly. No point in moaning about it, take the 3 points and move on and build on this foundation from the Liverpool game.

Big win, early kick offs arent fun for us at the best of times especially away at Southampton.

First half way too static. We need to play with movement and one touches to create decent chances against any team in the PL. Somewhat better in second half.

Elanga gets way too much shit on this forum. He had a tough time on his wing, but was involved in most our decent chances with good movement. Can’t say the same about Rashford though.

We won ugly but good teams do. It'll be at least a couple more months until we're playing more fluid football so winning while we try and get there is a good thing. Plus we've got at least a couple signings coming in the next week!

Tough look at the end seeing Ronaldo throwing his arms up when the cross didn’t get to him on minute 90+3

will give the benefit of the doubt, but would have preferred to see the attitude of sprinting back to defend, or even better - encouraging the ball in to the corner to see out the result.

This will be one of those games that we'll forget about in 3 months, besides for the tasty looking goal. But, the points are what matters. Could be the difference in getting into a Champions League spot, etc.

Also, Martinez was great. Varane too. We have a real defensive partnership now that has both quality and the right attitude.

These are the kind of games our competition have been grinding out results. These results do add on to the final tally and we’ll talk about these important wins. Good on confidence to have that winning mentality. Performances will improve , but getting that 3 point is very important.
McT has been quite good in the last 2 games and is a good option to have behind casemiro , Fred and Eriksen.
Good to see Bruno get a goal although his performance was quite bad. Probably the boost he needs to push on.
Decent performance by Elanga and Sancho , however Rashford was below average. Need to be more consistent those three. We desperately need Martial fit and for us to sign Antony. Will massively improve thay attack.
Martinez, Varane and Malacia are so good. Dalot is lowly getting there and hope he gets up to the mark.
Onwards and upwards

This was a chore to watch. Come on Eric, where's your attacking Philosophy :wenger:

They did everything today to win...which is all we can ask as fans.

From Game 1 to Game 4 is clear to see the improvements...still a long way to go but we need to enjoy the ride, there will be plenty ups and more downs to come.

Embarrassing game. No idea what y'all are celebrating. No control at all.

Lavia was fantastic, we should really sign him in a year or two.

That will be difficult, if he continues to develop Man City have a buy-back option I believe.

Fantastic off the ball, defence is surely a priority now. The attacking play will build from this. Martinez a beast again. Rashford ineffective, not sure why Sancho was subbed instead of him. Varane absolute class. Pleased for Bruno, he needed that like Rashford did on Monday.

Agree with almost everything here, borderline on the "behind" part for McT vs Casemiro, Fred and Eriksen - there will be games that suit each of the players, I think it'll be very much rotation given how high intensity it's been so far and also given that few of them have managed a full 90 minutes so far / we have two games per week non-stop until the WC (and hopefully two per week after, too). ETH definitely seems to favour McT so far, but Casemiro's adaption speed will be key in how quickly and consistently that changes. Hoping for a lot of strong competition for places rather than having a fixed midfield.

Marcus will never be a number 9.

Need a goal scorer, and as good as martial looked against the scouse, I am still not sure he is the answer to give us 20 goals a season.

Almost certainly due to stamina/energy used up. The commentators said it looked like he'd run out of gas or something to that effect as well.

He definitely grafted on Monday. They'd have known his energy levels pre-kick off though, I'd say why start him but what choice do we have.

Literally looked like a vintage SAF away win.
“Nothing has changed”, last season we were not winning this match, today we did.
So that has clearly changed.
Are you sure we deserved to win? Did we play well? Another day we would have lost. Last season we lost these games, last 8 years we have been losing these games. So yeah nothing has changed. Yet.

Eriksens crossing from the edge of the box just generates so much danger for the opposition.

We should have scored in the first half off that cross! He himself was unlucky not to have put it in on the ensuing rebounds.

Its just too bad Ronaldo doesn't want to stay and reap the benefits of this improved delivery.

Literally tailor made for him to put in a few of those headers.

That happened a lot last season. He seems to rarely have enough gas to finish a match.

Varane and Martinez very good (again), loved that Martinez tackle on/through Adams :)

McTominay very good in helping defence and we (deliberately because of opponent?) sacrificed something in midfield control/attacking play. Did a role today and some posters blinkered in ignoring it.

Really looking forward to seeing Casemiro embedded. Could be a huge step in protecting defence (FBs up) and allowing rest of midfield to push.

We need a forward, I’d argue more than a wide player. Yes, we need a wide player (I don’t rate Elanga as good enough for where we want to be) but we have Rashford, Sancho, Elanga, Garnacho while upfront it’s Martial, (out of position) Rashford or (aging) Ronaldo. Would have loved Alavarez but the greedy xxxxers got him.

Three points, 6th, 10th by Monday… better than bottom :)

Onwards and upwards.
It's a lot better this weekend, than it was last weekend.

Fecking woeful.

Lack of ability and lack of composure are terrifying.

It's quite shocking isn't it.

Happy with the 3 points, but feck me this team is bad. Can't keep the ball, can't press, can't win duels or second balls.

But Rome wasn't built in a day I suppose.

Yes and yes. Another day we would have lost but today we won. We had more possession and more shots on target. Despite being happy to sit on our lead for the last 30 minutes. This wasn’t a smash and grab.

Couldn't come out of our own half after the goal. Did we switch off or were Soton suddenly possessed by prime Barca?

Good win, didn’t think we were troubled all that much but also didn’t create much. Think we were far more aggressive which is great to see, there was a moment where two Southampton players were down after a bit of play in the second half and I was thinking that’s more like it , they’re playing Man Utd and they should know it isn’t a piece of piss anymore

Just read we didn't have a shot after Bruno's goal. It's nice to be able to see a game out but not that early into the second half!?

Soton only create one real chance on target with the header in the 65th minute....defensively the back five was very good.

We just struggled to break them down and that early chance with the 4 crazy efforts, if that goes in the game becomes a bit easier. Defensive structure was good but i still think Bruno defensively is a liability with his wandering around during pressing situations
