EL L Europa League Quarter-Final 2nd Leg

Sevilla 3:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Anyone else count Maguire's touches when he receives the ball from Lindelof, seeing how long it takes him to make a pass, allowing the opposition to get set into their shape.

Honestly lads, once you see it, you can't unsee it.

They both do it. Its how they plump up their touches and pass percentage stats. Take as many touches as possible to then pass sideways and not lose the ball.

That was shit. On more levels than I can count. If there is any glimmer of hope, it’s that the owners sell and the new owners let ETH clean house.

He literally is working for the other team. All the while he prances about, tapping the ball with the outside of boot, stuttering forward, scanning the pitch, unable to see a pass, some more tapping, arms out wide, then deciding he should hand passing responsibility to a keeper he knows cannot pass.
Perfectly put!

I pointed out in the matchday thread, that when we won the EL with Jose it was Romero in goal not DDG. When he is in goal we go out.

You can't blame the GK alone for today's loss or last week's capitulation.
We need a goal threat and when the manager is bringing on Weghorst who cannot score, when we need to score - I have to ask what he was thinking.

I personally can't say anything bad about DDG, because he has built up a lot of goodwill. In the past 10 years, he has won player of the year, more times than any other player.

Seen the Maguire mistake. But also a lot of people blaming DDG. This video contrast Martinez receiving the same pass from DDG.

Even though difference is clear. My issue is why is De Gea not scooping the ball to the LW in the first video and similarly to Dalot today.

On the plus side, we don't have to suffer the indignity of watching this threadbare, partly injured, mostly exhausted team being put to the sword by Juventus or City.

Top 4 and a trophy is still decent for Ten Hag's first season. We have also been incredibly unlucky this campaign with injuries, suspensions, and a lack of funding in the January transfer window. We clearly do not have the depth in our squad to cope with any adversity.

Ten Hag knows exactly where he needs to cut and where he needs to strengthen. But I am fully confident that we will be miles better than this next season, and even better the season after. It is this journey to greatness that makes it so much sweeter.

We can at least hope that Valverde is waiting for that fecker Nemanja Gudelj in the parking lot

Goals conceded in the 1st leg was bad luck as both was off target efforts from Sevilla. Their 2nd goal came off the shoulder and could have went anywhere. The first and 3rd goals conceded tonight was not about luck just woeful play by Maguire,DeGea to gift goals.
The two goals we conceded in the first leg came as a result of coasting for 60min with the players acting as if they had won it.

De Gea's positioning for the second goal tonight was appalling and while he is to blame for all three goals tonight, the team was shocking as a collective. Absolutely embarassing.

Ten Hag also has to take the criticism tonight - can he not motivate these players to turn up in one of the biggest and eminently winnable games of the season?

It's not the same pass, Martinez has a full second before an opponent is close. This second matters a lot.
True but Martinez is much better in a tight spot than Maguire and probably would have dealt with it better.

That was by virtue of Martinez's skill. De Gea should not make either pass, that's the end of it.
Exactly - as if Martinez unique on the ball ability is the standard ffs! It's a cut and dry hospital pass that you never play. He did the same against Brentford to Eriksen and it cost us. He's a liability.

Alan Smith was a shocking midfielder. Lots of huff and puff and zero guile. One to rank alongside Sneiderlin.
He wasn't great but streets ahead of Bebe, Obertan, Weghorst etc. Definitely doesn't belong in that category or anywhere close really.

My fear is that the Glazers won't leave. And they won't do anything with the windows.

Obviously, but Martinez is a rarity. The vast majority of centre backs would struggle in that situation. De Gea should know better.

The GK should be able to make the right pass 10 times out of 10, it's a position you can afford the LEAST risk, therefore if it looks a suspect pass just HOOF the cnut

Frustrating to go out to them given that they really aren't very good - all of their goals in the tie were either outrageous flukes or gifts from us.

Unfortunately we wilted in the hostile atmosphere, DDG handing them the first goal put us right up against it, and him handing them the last goal killed us, but even then we didn't match them for intensity or desire.

F*cking disgraceful from start to finish.

Bottlers.

The funny thing is, he often hoofs it out when a much simpler pass is on. His decision making is diabolical. His only asset is when he's making reactionary save which don't require any thought - outside of that, he's hopeless.

Maguire is a donkey and Martial a liability.

Scholes said it but Hag will know who to keep next season and who to feck off, whether he has the owners in place to support him is another matter.

The first goal we conceded at home last week was the result of Malacia letting a nothing ball run across him to Navas who whipped in a dangerous cross, leading to an own goal.
The second was a free header that none of our defenders got near to, as a result of poor defending out wide to let the cross in.
Yes there was a massive amount of bad luck it ended in the net after deflecting off Maguire but we were badly exposed to allow them to get into those positions in the first place.
Their first and third goals tonight were completely down to us, while their second goal was again a free header in the box.
Decent defences would deal with all of those.

That was a sad performance. We lost by 3 but it could have been 8.
Lots of deadweight on this team. ETH has a lot of work ahead of him

I love De Gea, he has saved us time and time again over the years with some incredible unbelievable saves but the future is now and he is not capable of playing the way ETH wants without being a major risk it's clear to see.

He is a far better player than he has shown at United. Something has happened in his head. He used to have a cocky swagger about him. But all that confidence seems to have been lost.

Is it possible that playing for a big club has created a lot of pressure and he [Sancho] has simply collapsed under the weight of that pressure?
Many great players have joined MUFC (from a smaller club) and have not been able to replicate their form for the previous club, due to the pressure.

1st leg goals weren't going into the net without the deflections which could have went anywhere. While the DeGea was poor on his positioning for the second goal tonight it came off the shoulder of the Sevilla lad and again could have went anywhere.

Too many flaky players whom fold in the face of adversity, the best lesson for Ten Hag tonight is to not trust them again for another big knock out cup game.

Absolutely shocking night all round. But feck it, move on & continue backing the manager to build the team with players with the right mentality to play for this club, and say goodbye to the same bunch of bluffers and the one pair of balls they share between them out of the club.

No they wouldn't, quick scan over your shoulder and you pass back to Dave for him to lump.
There was a man in between Maguire and De Gea. And if that was the right play, why didn't De Gea just lump it straight away? He can see what is happening in front of him. Maguire had 3 literally 3 players with a yard or two of him on the edge of the box ffs. You play that pass in 5 aside as a keeper and you get pelters, let alone in a European quarters. It's embarrassing, brain dead stuff which we've seen him do before in this very season.

No there wasn't.

It does go to show how fecking awfully run we’ve been the past few years when on the pitch you’ve got £300k a week Sancho, £190k a week Maguire, £250k a week Martial, £375k a week DDG.

And all four of them under ETH are either benchwarmers or ETH is looking to replace them.

Feck Ed Woodward for letting this happen and feck the Glazers for allowing Woodward to let it happen.

I'd rather have Bebe than Sancho on current form - at least Bebe attacked his player as well as threatening from behind with pace ( no matter how shonky the delivery on average) in his 12 games or so. A few belted crosses as lucky punts might still work out more productive than Sancho's usual feints and mincing with no end-ball.

It was a terrible performance with some major feck-ups. Obviously we will lose most games if we do that.

We were pretty ravaged by injuries and several players coming back from being out and lacking match sharpness. It’s no wonder we lost, really.

However, we lose too many games by big margins and being battered off the park. It shouldn’t happen. We believe we finally have a top manager but we still can’t stop capitulating. I can only conclude that the squad still needs a big overhaul. I suppose we need 24 players of pretty consistent quality so EtH can actually manage them, rotate them etc. We can bring a few kids through but, oh dear, I can’t see us getting the job done without spending a billion quid.
