EL D Europa League Quarter-Final 1st Leg

Manchester United 2:2 Sevilla

Post-match discussion

I don't think it's that complicated, once Sevilla settled down after 35mins it was a poor game without many clear chances on either side. We let go of any control and never really got it back, but that "offensive" setup with 2 AMs was Erik idea for the game.

Then Malacia, Martinez and Maguire happened and we panicked. Sevilla scored 2 goals from xG of 0,6.
That's it. It's just another bonkers game this season.

Changes- Sancho performance was screaming "sub me", so was Malacia (I thought Dalot coul've done a better job but it's hindsight).
The only clear mistake IMO was subbing Bruno. Was this really necessary? Couldn't he do the job on LW for Sancho? Weird decision considering he's banned for next Europe game anyway.

This is the type of game you quit and reload the FM game for. Even though your last save was 10 games ago.

Obviously, the nature of the goals was very unfortunate, but it's another example of our complete inability to control games. Treating the ball like a hot potato, instead of slowing the game down and putting your foot on the ball. The second half was too chaotic and loose for a game we were winning 2-0 in.

We've seen this before on multiple occasions where we have a lead but the game opens up and becomes end-to-end when it really shouldn't be. We desperately need a player next to Cas who can slow shit down. And yeah, Malacia was garbage. A positive night quickly turned into a shit one.

i’ve seen us and England do this a lot. I dont understand when you are 2 up and the opposition is coming into the game why you cant just play meaningless keep ball (LVG style lol) just to stunt their momentum. Just kept giving it straight back

I just think we simply don't have that type of player. McTominay, Fred, and Fernandes definitely aren't those types of players. Eriksen can be, but he came on last night in a game that was already incredibly loose and open. I was listening to someone describe them as "accelerants". And that's what they are. Get the ball to someone else as quickly as possible. And when you're in a game that you need to pump the brakes on, that's not what we need.

We desperately need someone next to Cas. Obviously, Frenkie would be the obvious choice, but I'm sure there are many more who could fulfill that role.

We got schooled by an experienced side, they know how to change a game, utd had no answer. What sevilla showed was a winners mentality, our players took it easy. Inexcusable to go out like this, we looked like a bunch of kids.
With how poor we are on foreign ground it is obvious we won’t go over there to win the game. Another year of European failure, what will we even do in the CL next season?

The Nottingham game can’t come soon enough so I can think of something else.

They scored from 2 ridiculous own goals.... we ended the game with Weghorst, Pellestri, Elanga. Also with 10 men.

Some perspective please.

Yes awful substitution, that bodes well for the return game, especially considering we miss all our best players bar Casemiro

The team for the the 2nd leg could be:-

De Gea

AWB
Lindelof
Maguire
Shaw

Eriksen
Casemiro
Sabitzer

Antony
Sancho

Rashford

Awful subs were needed as the ref told ETH Bruno and Antony were close to being sent off.

I heard but I don’t agree. If that is the real reason then Bruno is a liability every game, which he isn’t. As for Antony his entire duel with the Argentine was beautiful to watch, I did not see either of them go overboard. Mutual respect is what I saw, a match in the match.

Also bringing in 3 players at once never works out. We really threw it away due to subs.

We can field a strong team over there, I sincerely hope Maguire keeps this momentum, we need him next week to play a blinder if we want to survive sevilla.
Overall I don’t feel positive about the game

Do you wake up crying every morning?
so you think we'll be as good with Maguire-Lindeloff as with Varane-Martinez? You think we'll score as many goals without Rashford? You think Garnacho being injured is helpful? I suggest you simply wake up

I never said no hope
"I think we'll need a three-goal win tonight to have any hope of going through"

If you haven't got any hope, how much hope have you got...?

I can't believe this is where this conversation has moved to, so feel free to ignore me.

should have done that in the first place... if you knew the answer why did you ask the question. oh, and by the way, are you confident of us going through?

Antony, the ‘one trick pony’, was our most dangerous player tonight and he puts a shift in. He eventually let his emotions get the better of him tonight and hopefully he’ll learn from that. But I think he gets a raw deal from the media and punters alike, I think he brings a certain balance to the team, does his defensive shift and he has the ability to create something. He’ll be much better next season I predict, having a full season in the EPL under his belt.
I agree with your assessment of what he brings, and he is one of my favorite players on the team. I think he just needs to avoid getting sucked into the mano a mano stuff like he did with Acuna.

I thought that was great actually. But there's a time and place for everything and this probably wasn't it.
