The lady in the BT studio explained the rule.
Wasn't watching the BT coverage care to elaborate? against Sociedad a penalty was given when the ball deflected off Martinez knee and that was given as a handball and yet tonight wasn't?

So when the handball happens immediately before the shot, it will be given on VAR. If it happens prior during the buildup unless the ref picks it up, it's not going to be given.

Different for defenders.

That's my understanding

8 goals and 3 assists in his first 30 games doesn't seem too bad tbh

His stats might be ok. But the performances aren't there.

He isn't a threat to opposition and he hasn't been throughout the course of the season. Pellistri came on for a few minute and both managed to beat his man and make a run that could be spotted.

I'd be fine if he was creative like Di Maria ( which I thought he would be). However, he doesn't make key passes or create chances. His crossing is usually way overhit. He can't go on the outside. When he tries to go inside, the ball just seems caught under him.

I do hope he improves, but we shouldn't be consistently playing a United attacker that doesn't provide a threat. Right now Rashford is the only one consistently doing this. Garnacho does this in patches when he comes on. That's not good enough.

Dominated, the second half was terrific. Great response to Sunday.

Great performance and result. Really enjoyed that.

And very glad we got the fourth, as we well deserved to take at least a three goal lead to Betis. Could have been even more.

And De Gea getting a lot of stick after this game. He made 1 howler which was entirely on him with the pass to a Betis player, but harsh to blame him for their goal and Dalot was more at fault for the one earlier in the game.

He didn't really have much to do overall. Shakey in the first half but so we're quite a few and could have taken the second half off.
That's not true is it. He didn't just make one howler, he was the reason after Betis scored that we didn't keep control of the game until half time. His distribution was horrendous and put us on the backfoot. The howler he had was his third or fourth poor goalkick. That's very bad.

I thought it was classic ETH and the perfect decision.

Don’t single out any one person, hold them collectively accountable and give them a chance at redemption.

Couldn't have gone better.
Completely agree.

Making any changes would have 'singled out' those players. Or making widespread changes would have probably led to a poor result and just exacerbated the issue.

Sending out the same team and getting a reaction and very good performance and result was the right thing to do and worked perfectly.

Was a bit worried after they equalised and thought we would fall apart again. Very good second half, plenty of chances created and good performances from the subs. Great to see Wout get his goal but we need to be more clinical and put more chances away.

Was behind his goal in the first half, was mental how little composure he had / how often he just hoofed it out of play / straight to one of there players/ to no one

A poor goalkick isn't a howler. The clearance to nobody was a howler though.

I do find that sometimes there is a lack of movement from players when he's looking for that short to midrange pass, which when teams are pressing forward can make it difficult. Not that it excuses the pass to a Betis player as he had several options in space.

Half decent first half excluding the De Gea clangers. I think the 7-0 followed him mentally into this game. He was really nervy and it was affecting our defensive cohesion. Great goal smashed in by Rashford, he just can't stop scoring. We then created some chances and got punished by a mistake, can happen.

Second half we were a different proposition entirely. Created chance after chance and did not let in. These past years we usually take our foot off the gas; it wasn't the case tonight, it was a real onslaught.

Special mention to Wan Bissaka, he did an excellent job when he came on and transformed our threat from his side. If he wasn't already, he's certainly ahead of Dalot now. Pellistri had a great cameo. What he did for the goal felt like it happened in slow motion from the Stretford End. Very happy for Weghorst: the greatest player of all time.

Some of wan bissakas balls / runs were incredible.

Jack Grealish 6 goals and 3 assists in 33 games this games, similar price tag for both players but Jack the lad doesn't seen to attract the same attention with the UK media. One English the other Brazilian might have something to do with it...

His clear love of his time here & his passion for the sport is very emotionally engaging.

I love having guys like him on the team. One of the reasons I love football is the passion of a Wout, especially when so many people rip on him on here.

Kind of like when Herrera would go freaking crazy when we scored when he was on the bench years ago. Made me respect the guy forever.

Just been looking at the upcoming fixtures.

As we *touches wood* should go through now, then there’s going to be some disruption to ours and Sky’s Saturday night schedule.

The quarter finals fall before our Saturday night matches at Forest and home against Chelsea so they will be moved to the Sunday.

However, *if* we beat Fulham in the cup then the FA Cup Semi will be instead of the Chelsea game and that will have to be rearranged. It will be a Europa quarter final on the Thursday and an FA Semi on the Sunday.

It’s a good problem to have but when the hell are we going to fit all these fixtures in before the end of the season?!

Yep. Herrera will always have a spot in my footballing heart, no doubt.

Plus he got Slippy sent off!

If you base his performances so far on his price tag, he's definitely been underwhelming. I don't think anyone would argue otherwise.

But take away the price tag, and for a young player new to the league, he's certainly had his moments. There's a lot of work needed to reach the level required but he also possesses important natural attributes which can help him get there.

And if nothing else, that cutting in and hitting it with his left will give us many moments of magic. Which if that was to be his only redeeming feature, at least it isn't drawing fouls and going down easily like the guy he was compared with above.

Come on, Grealish got a whole season on him and is literally 5 years older.

Let's give Antony this season and then we can judge. He for sure is doing better than Sancho who's been a complete shadow in his second season and there's barely any noise made about it.

I feel like Pellegrini picked a hairstyle when he was 12, and now he's just going to ride it into the grave.

Sancho: 32 chances created in 1.252 mins. (39,1 mins per chance created)
Grealish: 55 chances created in 2.203 mins. (40,1 mins per chance created)
Antony: 25 chances created in 2.011 mins. (80,4 mins per chance created)

Is he though?

How is that accidental? And he gained from this “accident”. Ridiculous decision. I’m more pissed off for our very weak protest.

I don't understand this either, especially since we were penalised for an accidental handball somewhere close to the midfield in the 2nd half, I believe it was Wout. So if you accidentally handball nowhere near goal, it's a handball, but if you accidentally (or intentionally) handball, but pass the ball and then the next player scores, it's not a handball? How does this make sense to anyone?

I seriously dislike these stats.

Unless someone tells me the definition of a 'chance', demonstrates the average xG per chance (since we're going there) are comparable, I might think about it.

And even then, they're different players. Antony has the required intensity (usually) and mental fortitude to play in the PL. It doesn't seem like EtH thinks Sancho does (at least yet). Also, Sancho mainly creates for others, Antony likes shooting (so basically a right-side Rashford).

They are both useful but looking at stats like this is just not giving a rounded analysis view.

Good performance, great result. Should've been more. Would've been more if Rashford stayed on. This should allow us to rest players for the second leg if required.

As for the players' reaction after Sunday, they largely delivered. I'm afraid Dalot played himself out of the starting XI and DDG only kept his place due to no better alternative. But on the positive side, Bruno completely dominated the second half, Rashford went back to scoring and Antony could've had a hattrick.

But the highlight was Weghorst scoring at the Stretford End. He doesn't have the ability of a United player but he has the heart of one. Really happy for him. Pellistri was also fantastic when he came on, as he has been every time. Hope EtH sees him as a genuine alternative to Antony on the RW.

That is how I woulld sum it up. Well put.

We looked much better in the second half than the first, where we were pretty sloppy.

We need to become much better on the ball, the passing in the first half was extremely erratic. We've got too many players who are happy to punt it and hope it results in a half decent pass.

Watching the games, not sure how you can say Sancho has done more than Antony for us this season. Crucial goals just one thing. I am sure Sancho will come good, and I bet it's sooner than later but the Antony agenda on here goes too far. People have already made up their mind.

Ironically, we should have scored 7 in that game! 4-1 is a decent lead to take into the 2nd leg and a fair reflection of how the game went. I would have been disappointed with 3-1, and I had a feeling of dread that Betis were gonna make it 3-2 before Wout's goal which would have been a complete travesty.

Take aways from the night: de Gea can't play the ball out from the back but we already knew that. AWB has his shortcomings but he's been desperately unlucky to lose his place to Dalot and he should win it back. Bruno looked focused and with a point to prove, more of the same for the rest of the season please. A brief but very impressive cameo from Pellestri has surely earned him a longer run in a PL game to prove it's not a one off.

Antony showed he's a talented player capable of scoring the occasional worldie, but the jury's still out on him. The fact is, no half decent PL left back would have allowed him onto his left to score that goal, he probably couldn't believe his luck. And chipping it over the bar when he had 3 players wide open in front of goal showed he either doesn't see teammates in a better position or chooses to ignore them for his own glory. If he cuts the flicks and the tricks and becomes a team player, he could be very good for us. Hopefully ETH can get it out of him.

How about you replace that sentence with "aren't convinced one is particularly better than the other".

There's no agenda, it's just that some of us don't feel Antony has shined enough to warrant getting started game after game despite Sancho's woes and ETH's possible cronyism.

I suppose it was really an accident that the ball hit him but I think he moved his arm to guide the ball as it rolled down his forearm. Whistle! Free-kick!

But the only scenario where any handball is not given as a handball is if it happens in the direct lead up to a goal? Anywhere else at any other time in the game, any handball is given as handball? Why wouldn't players moving forward attempt to use their hand to gain an advantage just to pass the ball to a team mate and the handball can not be given?

There were lots of comments on the match-day thread claiming that sending out Sunday's team was a bad move - the players should be punished for their performance at the weekend. If you sent me out to play in sleet and snow I would feel I was being punished! I also think it was fair to give the players a chance to redeem themselves - after all they are professionals and probably felt really disgusted with Sunday.
Commentators are funny - mine - on DAZN - offering advice to Betis when the ball went to Antony "you have to be careful - you just never know what he's going to do!" Actually I do!!
