FA W FA Cup 4th Round

Manchester United 3:1 Reading

Post-match discussion

Sat, 28 January 2023

Casemiro, Antony,AWB and Maguire were our best performers while Malacia was a continual willing runner. Quiet games from Bruno, Erikson and Rashford though but I guess those three have been carrying us of late.

Because when the ball was played one of our players was offside. And then he touched it later in same phase of play. I don't see what the fuss is about.
Wasn’t offside at any point. Lines were drawn at the wrong time and it came from the Reading player

Casemiro easily MOTM. AWB was very good, as was Antony. Lindelof put in a solid shift, although I need to watch how he acquitted himself on the goal we conceded. But apart from that, Lindelof was very good.
I blame Antony for the goal interestingly, he left his man because he was anticipating an opportunity for a counter. Do the defending first!

In any case, good performance from him today - needs to get his shooting boots back on though

Good first half marred by absolutely atrocious finishing. Great second half! That goal was too cheap to concede however. Also, very questionable refereeing.

Onto the next one!

Shocking decision for the Rashford goal, he was robbed.
Another solid display from Antony. Wan Bissaka good too.

Not on him I think. It was Antony who let his man loose.

Job done. Overall a decent performance. Offside goal should have stood but glad it didn’t come back to haunt us.

Casemiro’s two goals were class. Antony was brilliant, his best performance for us so far.

Carroll still an absolute horrific striker.

Missed most of the 2nd half, but caught the highlights now. Thought the first half was the most dominating performance from us I can remember in years. Reading had nothing and were pinned back. But our final pass in the final third was pretty sloppy, decision making poor, and some players still in relatively poor form, like Bruno, Rashford had two or three opportunities to play a nice pass after doing the heavy lifting only to end up playing a poor ball. Antony a little bit better what with passing a few balls through the lines, but still doesn't do enough offensively (and lost his man for the goal).

On the plus side, admittedly against a much weaker side, I thought the way ETH set up the back four was pretty good. AWB way up on the right, allowing Antony to cut inside with more options, Maguire ahead of Lindelof and both did pretty well in pushing up the tempo I thought. Another game for Weghorst to get his match fitness going and a rest for Shaw and Varane.

Still think it was a bit of a gamble, the fruit of which we may not have seen yet, to continue playing Rashford, Eriksen and Casemiro.

Now, give us another easy tie please.

Job done. Solid result and we progress. Thankfully had it wrapped up early enough to get the big hitters off for some rest. Cheers Carroll for the red too, although they played better after that honestly. He probably should have been off before that too, but someone avoided a yellow for his tackle on Eriksen.

Great game by Casemiro obviously, which I'm used to saying at this point. Antony impressive. Massive shame for Rashford to not have his goal stand for the record, but right call to sub him anyway so we can save him for when needed. Decent minutes for some younger players of the squad.

Didn't they show it as offside when ball was played by our player? Then it deflected off Reading player after. Then it found its way back to the offside player? That's how I remember it. But missed the post match so maybe there's more to it?

Struggle till the first goal to break them down. We have moved forward again though. Carroll is a terrible player.

So how was the Salah goal onside two weeks ago v Wolves based on that synopsis?

No clue. Some people are saying it was down to the intent of the defender to play the ball rather than block it. For me they should both be offside.

I like how DDG almost breaks his foot after kicking the goalpost in anger following the goal by Reading in the dying minutes of the game.

Most pointless MOTM vote ever, can't believe it wasn't 100%.

I really hate how the TV commentators call it player of the match. Like there's a woman on the pitch who might have got it otherwise. So performative.

Easy night. Anthony was really good as was his Brazilian team mate. good to rest a few players.
Mainoo looked very composed sitting in holding midfield.

Andy Carroll should have gone for the tackle on Erikson, feckin dangerous lump of shite.

I like the look of him, but Mainoo needs a loan. He seems decent on the ball, but he does need to learn when to come and receive the ball and gain confidence in being able to spread it. That only comes from experience, which I think he can get from a good loan

Antony is a good player. I think how people think of him as a talent might need to adjust. He's very much an inside threat, more of a potential playmaker than a winger....which is why he's struggled a bit with our fans.

I say this because it's quite clear that he can easily make incisive passes from the flank and when given some space, can drive down toward the centre and make a pass or shot. He's very good at keeping the ball, but is not the great of a dribbler, despite his skills. He and Sancho are quite similar in that sense and I think fans but also the media need to adjust their expectations of what he is as a player. He's not Mahrez or Di Maria.

How does VAR not pull it back for their goal? I get the game was over, but the Reading player has both arms around Maguire, not facing the ball, Maguire manages to eventually get free of him, only to have his shirt almost pulled off. These types of off the ball incidents is where VAR should excel.

That sounds like a normal set of events at any corner

Randomly played his segment with Cruyff and asked him what would Johan think of his progress with United so far.
it was surreal
Played it before the game as well
I felt embarsssed for Ten Hag

At last, someone who understands the offside rules@
