EL W Europa League Group E

Omonia Nicosia 2:3 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

In reality it could have been 7! Bruno hitting the bar, Ronaldo post, Antony effort, Rashford being unselfish at the end, Antony being unselfish in the first half.
Defensively we need Varane to be fit for Sunday.

The key to this season is keeping Rashford and Martial fit and motivated, Eriksen used correctly, Varane as fit as he can be and Fernandes being able to get into his natural positions without Ronaldo on the pitch and then we stand a chance of getting top four in the league and maybe depending on who goes out in the CL maybe winning Europa.
I feel like our top 4 hinges on Martial being fit and motivated. He has looked very good under ETH, in a position where we desperately need someone. He scores goals, and also brings other people into play with his link ups. Let's hope he has a cracker of a season.

Anyway, this was routine victory. We had 26 shots. It should have been 6-2, 7-2. We played well

At this stage, every game is a lesson:

1. Rashford coming in may have exposed an issue we have been dealing with for the past year. Sancho and Ronaldo came in...and both our pressing and our attacking intensity dropped. My new theory is that both of these players don't make enough effort to connect the midfield to the attack. Playing both together leads to us being overly passive. They don't create passing lanes for our midfielders and are too passive on and off the ball.

2. Martial is going to be really good under ETH.

3. Formation may also be something to be considered. People assume that it's set, but the brief moment Bruno went off for Martial saw us have a bit more space. It was our best moment in the game; not because Bruno went off, but because we had less congestion in the final third due to the space created from being in a 442. Considering we use inverted full backs, is it possible for the formation to work for us? Playing a 343 would also achieve that imo, it something to consider.

Very careless and amateur for a lot of the game today. Happy with the 3 points but it might come down to gd to win this group. Missed opportunity to win by 3-4 goals. Hopefully we can make up in the home games vs Nicosia and Tiraspor.

Scruffy, overpaid, minimum effort, low quality garbage. Omonia were destroying this anti-team, mistake after mistake. 3 points barely won.

Some occasional individual displays saved this 'team'.

Back to relying on Shaw,Rashford and Martial. It wont take us anywhere in the long term.

It was men on boys today the performance was more convincing than anything. I think we could go all the way in this one and qualify for the champions that way…. Come on the boys!

Two more games against weaker team in worst case scenario. Not ideal but nothing to be worried about.
Two more games against Champions League opposition. Potentially Barcelona/Inter/Juventus/Atletico/Chelsea/Ajax/Sevilla.

We are still playing from a few years back. We are too slow in moving the ball against opposition that sits back and playing Ronaldo is making it worse. Also our passing is terrible too and that is why we cannot get the one tough going in tight spaces.

I enjoyed this one - it was fun to watch, unlike the game at Sheriff (or Leicester or Southampton).

It has to be the Antony-Martial-Rashford frontline now, right? Surely it's obvious at this point.

If they are all fit, they will start against Everton, imo.

one of these days i'd like to see this lineup as our front six....

Martial
Rashford Sancho Antony
Casemiro Scott

Pretty poor performance in all areas of the pitch.

If our opponents are half decent then we are in trouble.

Ffs, today i realised that only first goes through. I thought that first 2 goes to next round

Nah. We are likely going to have to win all 3 remaining games now and score some goals too to avoid 2nd place. And we don't tend to do well in Spain either.

Could end up with Atletico or Sevilla or someone like that looking at the CL groups as they are. Hahahaha

We need to beat Sociedad to avoid a play off with a CL dropout. GD could factor in even if we do beat them.

So could do with a big win next week and then win the last two for an easier route.
But if we beat them by two goals then we don't need gd, right?
