Post-match discussion

Watched it again this morning, just had to. What a game of football, those who were on the stands will remember it forever and talk about it as one of the best matches they've seen. 9 goals, 42 shots, 17 on goal.. the despair, feeling we hit the rock bottom and 3 goals in last 6 minutes to turn it around with everything on the line. Simply no words to describe all the madness. It is something that only United can give you.
Amen

I think I aged about 30 years during that.

From being relatively comfortable for an hour or so, to wondering how on earth we were going to extra-time. Thinking we should be okay with the extra man, to being probably the most deflated I've felt as they made it 4-2. The hope with Bruno's penalty, to the absolute madness of those couple of minutes at the end. What a feeling, what a game.

I feel our defence weakened significantly once Shaw came on for Maz. Was Maz injured or did Amorim's tweak almost costed the game? Or maybe he did it on purpose so I almost have a heart attack.

I would have loved to have seen the redcafe player ratings for the 99 champions league final

I know we ended up winning but I was out waxing my car in protest during the trophy presentation because the performance was so bad for the first 92 minutes. Couldn't even get excited that it was an historic treble and am more glad my car is shiny.

Had a family issue, him and Lindelof both left Old Trafford at half time.

Minor point, but I thought the referee was really good yesterday. Let the game flow, gave yellow cards on first tactical fouls, got both penalties correct, didn't fall for Lyon's bullshit, etc.

Can't think of anything significant he got wrong.

Think second yellow for Tolisso was quite harsh.

Harsh, but not wrong. He clipped Yoro by accident, but it was a foul.

It was completely accidental therefore not a yellow, therefore the wrong decision. You can give a foul without it being a yellow so he got that bit wrong and that was a big mistake. Luckily it didn't hurt Lyon.

It's a booking because it prevents Yoro from breaking away. Intentional or not doesn't really enter the equation

Yoro was running towards goal. Always a yellow imo.

Probably but it felt like justice in a game where they got so many yellows for professional fouls. Seems like we often get done this way by teams. In the 4-1 against Sociedad I think they got something like 7 yellows, many of them for professional fouls, and none of them turned into reds. So yeah, I'll take the Tolisso sending off as a bit of justice even if it was harsh.

Really? I though we were good in Paris… professional away performance in Europe. We were pathetic in the home leg, I’d agree
Checked out the match reports. At OT they had 55% possesion and 12 shots to our 10. That probably flatters us a bit, as I recall we were pretty flat. But in Paris they had 71% possession and 12 shots to our 4. That seems pretty consistent with how I remember it. I recall saying to my mate who I watched it with "if we win this, it's going to be the biggest football robbery I've seen". We did, and it was. I never understood why people took it as some sort of potential turning point. We were badly and obviously outplayed. That was not the case yesterday.

I see the usual suspects are saving a pop at Rasmus but Drury was right, he’d clearly been told to play deeper and he linked up play well. Was also well placed had garno picked him out at least once. Can’t question his passion and desire although obviously we need a no.9 who scores goals

I am definitely not one of his habitual defenders, but I thought he did well yesterday. Linked up well, had several key passes, contributed to the first goal by drawing off two defenders with his run. Pretty good performance.

I am also not among those who buy into the general notion that his ineffectiveness as a scorer can be accounted for by the failure of his teammates to provide service, but last night there were definitely several situations where that happened.

Might have been harsh. Maguire was definitely also grabbing a lot of shirt of the Lyon player.
I don't understand how that's not a penalty - he literally pulled him to the ground. But I've basically given up trying to make sense of penalty decisions. Although usually it's not as bad in Europe as it is in the PL.

Shaw looked worryingly far from match fit, yes. Given how long he's been out, It's a big question mark not just how long he needs to be back up to speed, but also what sort of level he can return to.

Just rewatched from 100 mins at 2-2, absolutely mindblowing. Old Trafford is electric from the Bruno pen onwards. Brilliant stuff, Rio and Savage are fantastic too. I'm going to treat myself to at least one more rewatch later on as well.

Proud to say I was there and didn't leave.at 4-2!
Never know celebrations like those after the 4th and 5th goals.
Well worth the 7 and a quarter hours it took me to get to the ground
I'm pleased for you :)

Am still buzzing. Can't stop watching the highlights :)

It took me a full morning to gather the courage to log in here. I still can't get my head around my team bottling it this way. Congratulations and best of luck for the rest of the competition (my supporter's ego would definitely do with having lost to the eventual winner of the cup).

I don't think I've ever heard Old Trafford as loud as it was after that Maguire goal.

Can anyone think of any another goals scored at the stadium that produced just a complete wall of sound like last night?

That has to be some kind of db record.

Takes some courage! Yeah maybe you bottled it, but you also did really well to get yourselves into the position to bottle it in the first place.

Anyone know why Mazraoui and Lindelof had to leave the game at half time? Family reasons I understand but it seems very bizarre and coincidental that they both had to leave at the same time.

Honestly, I do think that Fonseca had a stinker in both legs. His team selections plus the changes made during extratime were awful, and the final result shows. It's a shame that Fofana was injured, and could only play 40 minutes over the 2 legs, because he really makes our attack much more unpredictable and dangerous. But you had your fair share of injured players as well, that's football anyway. It'll take time to recover from this.

Fair play mate, you guys have a good side! Some great forwards who can cause problems.

I have a lot of respect for your club, always enjoyed our ties against you.

Seen lots of fans from other clubs loving the game last night. And then you get the bitter fecks complaining about the commentators not being impartial

Last night put me through so many emotions I had not felt for a long time watching a Utd game.

It will go down as one of the greatest nights at Old Trafford. But lets be honest, we blew a 2 goal lead with 15 mins to go, only to concede 4 goals.

Good fighting spirit to come back, we did play some very good football but it was a situation that never should have been allowed to happen.

Hopefully this is the wake up call the team need, but we are starting to play some very good football under the manager now.
