Post-match discussion

Why even have a forum then? No one can say anything against the "perfect" managers unless they are better than them, right? This kind of reasoning is what is sad and is easy way out of argument. "Why don't you do better then him if you know so much...blah blah" Bunch of bollocks.
Exactly. I was just going to put something similar myself, then saw your thread. It would be boring if we agreed with everything the manager did or didnt do, and even with each other.

Surprised at the sensitivity of many on here. Saying the tactics towards the end were wrong hardly makes someone a moaning prick. Just an observation surely. I assume everybody is delighted with the result and the majority of the performance. It's a huge result for us.

Perhaps there's more to this. Was the match day thread really bad or something?
You might be right. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I just think its counterproductive is all. How does the team build form when people are now criticising 1-3 wins without even mentioning that they were pleased with the result on their post?

They might well be pleased with the result, but their post just saps the enthusiasm from the rest of the forum (lessening the enjoyment for a lot of people). Maybe people just need to express themselves better I dont know.

Why would you go out of your way to find a negative perspective on a win? Why not just enjoy the perspective of the win itself?

Also, "shit game, but a couple of great goals"? How high are your standards? Relax man.

Not sure if you're being serious? But good job misunderstanding my point completely! :)

I think it was more of the brilliance of Valdez than poor finishing.

By that logic, every goalkeeper in the Premier League is brilliant. Except they're not, most weekends. Far from it. They just all happen to be brilliant against us, it's a huge coincidence.

Not sure. People are different and will always rub each other up the wrong way. Can't say anything someone says on a forum could lessen my enjoyment of a big win. I wouldn't want us to get to the stage where we have to preface every point we make to avoid being labelled as overly positive or negative either. Points can be made in isolation and surely everything is up for discussion on a forum regardless of the result.

It's almost like people just want to censor each other. Anyway I'm going to stop. It's getting a bit too philosophical. It's been a good day and could get better if Liverpool lose

I don't mean to suggest censorship. The negativity just got to me for this particular game since I had so much fun watching it. I had 0 expectations because of the circumstances. People can usually say what they like I'm not usually sensitive.

But I will say I get along a lot easier with people who are quick to joke but quick to console rather than criticise.

We can only hope!

I think some perspective is good here.

1. Team severely depleted by injuries/suspensions.
2. Exhausted physically and mentally after consecutive tough games, one with 10 men.
3. Team fighting for relegation, at home, with their manager sacked and a point to prove.
4. Riverside has historically been a nightmare for United. Even under Fergie.
5. We won, moved up to fifth and gooners are in 6th.
6. Still in Europe.

Also, feck Liverpool and Klopp.

This guy is a winner, he wants silverware and chances of more silverware.

In addition, the winner of Europa does not play elimination games as far as I know. I would much rather play Super Cup against a giant club than playing against a team like Olympiakos for example. I really missed those intense European games. Especially if you think that the last one played one of them was in 2013.

Also considering some of our best players played in Euros last summer, it is better to give them a couple of weeks more rest. That's why I think Jose prefers Europa league.

Good win, 2 week rest now. Will do wonders for Pogba, Ibra and a few others.
Ibrahimović, Mata, Rooney, Martial and a few others, but not Pogba and most of them, with their international duty.

anyone else getting really worried about Smalling?

He looks at sea out there most of the time.

Rojo... defender of the year?

But, like he said, the Europa League is risky, even for a cautious manager like he is. We just can't abdicate from the fight for the 4th place. If there's an Europa League game we have to present our best team and then featuring other squad players in the next Premier League game, like Anderlecht home followed by Burnley away, then be it. But we'll probably play a defensive second team Anderlecht away and then full force against Chelsea home.

You are absolutely right. I think, what Jose said was, if he had to choose Europa or top 4, knowing that the result is guaranteed, he would choose the Europa. But I might be reading too much into it.

I think he said more than that, that he “would prefer” to win the Europa League. I read it as assuming that, when and if the time comes, he will opt accordingly.

I think if Rashford had put away 2 of his chances we would have turned this into a rout.

That was the difference today IMO.

He needs to do a lot of work over the summer. Mourinho's team will know how to work with him.

Them getting so many balls in midfield was annoying.

Midfield is where our weakness is.

If we have a solid holding midfielder, both Pogba and Herrera can be further up and be picking up the pieces.

Surprised that many slagging on Rashford; I thought he was very good. His movement is top class, and eventhough he missed his chances, could have just as easily had a brace. That's just the way it goes sometimes. He was constantly putting Boro's defense on edge.

Lingard, Valencia and Rashford injected a nice amount of pace today, especially because it seemed that Valencia was given a bit more of a free license to get and stay forward without having as much defensive responsibility as normal. Bailly was covering for him quite a bit and seemed pretty obvious that Valencia was a main focal point on the wing today, although he got a bit shown up by Young's excellent cross for the Fellaini goal.

Valencia was man of the match for me today.

There're people who would moan even If we played a game a day and won. It's always like that.

6 at the back for Rudy Guestede. He must be World Class and Middlesbrough must have got a bargain.

Don't really care about the tactics. At the end of the day we won, are in 5th and still within reach of City and Liverpool with Europa League still to look forward to.

Keep it up Jose.

At this point in the season, and given where we are, style comes last for me.

Get the results, even amongst weird tactical decisions.

Zlatan and Herrera will be fresh. Pogba has got impromptu rest, albeit whilst injured. Martial is fit again. Mkhi and Mata are ready to put a shift in.

Looking forward to April.

Just got back and had a 250 mile drive ti gather my thoughts...but;

Fans were awesome
Smalling and Jones are some sort of comedy double act. Both make far too many errors. Neither is good enough.
Rashford looked seriously knackered after 50 mins which is worrying, needs to work on his stamina.
Not sure why we reverted to hoof ball after the second goal. We went from very comfortable to looking very vunerable. It was ridiculous.
Valencia and carrick awesome, valencia probably one of our best players this season.
Good win, lets kick on now.

This club needs wholesome top to bottom changes in personnel. Our defense, midfield and attack is filled with such limited players, M'boro had us camped in our own half most of the fecking game. We are incapable of starting any form of attack from the back. Our defenders pass the balls among themselves then under the slightest pressure pass it to DDG to hoof upfield, mostly back to the opposition. We get so many opportunities to start counters after winning the ball from our opponents but Rojo, Smalling, Jones, Darmian, Valencia will just hoof it straight up back to the opposition. We will never be an elite team with defenders who can't pass for shit.
I won't even get started on our midfield, there was none today anyways but firstly we need better defenders at this club, who know how to play football and do other stuff apart from defend. I'm sick of the mindless hoofing and passing the ball among themselves and the keeper, it's been doing my head in since Fergie's last days so it's not even any managers fault, we just seem very content with very technically limited players, our football has been Burnlesque of recent, for such a big club and the money being invested it's just annoying

I liked the way we played with pace and straight forward until Lingard scored and we switched off.
Happy with the three points and a Tony V goal!

People bitching and complaining about the performance in which their team won despite playing without Zlatan, Pogba, Herrera, Mkhi, Martial (the entire usual front 5 basically)...with rest of the team being completely fatigued from playing 4 games in 10 days (Mata was completely gassed...) which included trip to Russia and back, hard game against Chelsea after which they got stuck on the way back and came back home in the 4 in the morning.

How the hell can you complain? It's not like Jose wanted us to invite that much pressure near the end, he said that him self. The team was absolutely knackered. Ideally Mkhi would have replaced Mata so we can keep the shape we had but it ended up being ideal. He spared him and we won anyway.

And now this horrible period with limited option could become some sort of blessing in disguise. Most people agree that Zlatan, Pogba and Herrera were the players that needed the rest the most. Mkhi and Martial need time to get back to full fitness. Now we have 2 weeks break with some of those players being suspended or with light injuries. They will actually have time to recuperate and refresh just in time for the most important part of the season. Zlatan basically got a holiday. Pogba will rest for around 3 weeks. So will Herrera. So will Martial. Our next game is WBA at home without Zlatan and Herrera but with the rest back. We win that one and they are back for the game 3 days later against Everton at home...we'll be rested and in full strength. Looking forward to it.

Have seen the first half much earlier this afternoon, the stupid site where I watched it has the 2nd half but instead of it being the 2nd half the video is a summary of the Championship etc and not United as it says.

Gave up as I wanted to know the result and have watched 3 minute highlights of the 2nd half.
Hopefully the site will sort itself out and actually show the 2nd half and then I will comment on the match

Nothing indicates Martial wasn't out as a manager's option.

Win that leaves sour taste in mouth after that cowardice approach from Jose, awful.

Normally I would agree, however, the fact we played 3 matches in 6 days changes the dynamics and decisions. We were always going to be heavy-legged at the end and hanging on was going to be the strategy.

Valencia was great today.........except for his crossing. If he could cross with accuracy and good decisions he would be one of the best right backs in the game. I counted at least 4 times where if heputs the right cross in it's an almost certain goal. I hate and love him at the same time.
