Post-match discussion

As long as were winning, I honestly have no problems whatsoever. People need to realize we've been 6th for quite some time.

Throw your luxury-feelings out the window folks. Doesnt matter how we win when its squeeky bum time .

Again.

Fifth time we've scored more than two goals in the Prem.

Are they our best attackers? I really liked this team today.

Ibra has scored 27 or something. Clearly he is our best scorer. Would be surprised if pogba and mkhitariyan aren't our best creators.

Amazingly proud of our players. Excellent 3 points.

I also think this wasn't the normal M'Boro - you could see that the players knew they had a new coach, the fans were noisy and the manager looked full of energy. After the second goal, they started putting in crosses and turned up the pressure. As someone said, always a possible banana-skin these games, so job well done.

I really dont get some of the comments today.
OK so playing with 7 defenders is not pretty to watch and we invited the pressure and we so very nearly threw it away, but FFS after the week we have just had.
The players were running on empty, the only thing that mattered was the 3 points and winning them how ever we could and thats just what we did,for me it was a job very well done.
I don't subscribe to this bullshit we have standards to fill and losing would be better than the way we won.

Mkhitaryan would easily be our best creator (and probably 2nd best goal scorer) if he would actually play consistently. Looks a bit lightweight for the Prem for all his talent. Keeps getting crocked.

C'mon everybody...Be happy! That's a 3-1 away win. In my opinion, Mou made a mistake substituting Mata for Rojo, but it doesn't matter anymore. Could have been even more comfortable win. Great to be 5th and pushing the teams ahead of us. Good end just before the international break!

As I've said I thought the tactics in the last 20 minutes almost cost us the game. It was a mistake by the manager. He hinted at as much in his post match interview.

But I'm delighted with the win. Anyone who isn't happy due to style of play or anything else needs to ask themselves why they watch football. This was a huge win under difficult circumstances. If you can't enjoy a win like this I've no idea why you bother supporting a team.

Jose was very happy with the attitude of the players. Can't disagree with that. Was a hardworking performance from the whole team.

I also don't get all the "everything is rosy" comments after this game as well but I don't complain about them (that much:wenger:), ppl will criticize, not everyone has to have the same opinion, otherwise we would be nearing RAWK-ish standards where everything is absolutely peachy and just ban any kind of criticism there is.

I think Mourinho genuinely thought game won, shut up shop make it hard for Middlesbrough and at same time rest Mata.

I think he probably sadistically liked the idea of parking a bus against a team that would usually park the bus at Old Trafford. Feel the frustration!

You are such a tactical genius...Such a pity you do not manage United...

Whats all this "job done" bollocks. Since someone started it against Rostov there has been no end to it. There must be some originality out there!!

I agree with that but I think we have more immediate needs in attack and holding midfield that I doubt there would be any funds left over for a huge CB signing. Mourinho simply has to take a leap of faith with either Blind or a youth player if he is going to persist with a back three in the short to medium term.

yea, seems like it's not going to happen. Just don't see our current bunch (defence) competing in CL which, (fingers-crossed) we will we doing next season.

Jones,Smalling and Bailly were shit.. Bailly forgot to mark his space..

Jose 1/10

But three points. Lets never do this again tactically..

Agreed.

Good result, ok performance (considering injuries).

Happy with today. Not a classic, but one of those games where the three points matters more than the performance.

With several key players missing and on the back of a gruelling run of fixtures, plus with them having a new manager and a clear bounce in performance, we got past a potential banana skin with only a little suffering.

That is the last post I make about this and I will just stop because it is pointless. We have so much managerial talent that understand football to such a great extent I am asking myself the following thing- when the game is so clear to you why are you writing in a forum but do not manage in the Premierleague? From what you are writing most of you guys are definitely better managers than Mourinho, know the game better and will probably win the league 38-0-0. You really know so much. One thing is to state an opinion, completely other thing is to say with certainty what our manager should have done. Excuse me guys, no offence meant, but how the fck would you know? What have you won in your managerial career and where did you get your coaching badges? It was an emotional game that we won and everyone should be as happy as hell. But not the posters here...It must be really sad for you, no matter wheter we win or draw (because we have lost 1 game in the last 3-4 months.) you are always whining....Such a pity...

What's not to get? There is no pleasing some people. The idea of transition, development, making do with a second string just doesn't settle in heads. People remember the Fergie era highlight reel and want more of the same.

Today was a bit disjointed and negative at times, but we've been a poor side this season and its matches like this we've been screwing up. I'm glad we got the right result with no further injuries or suspensions. This result takes us closer to 4th, let's fight tooth and nail for champions league this season and look to improve over the summer.

Also good solid performance from Valencia, Rashford, Lingard and Fellaini today.

Something still needs to be done about the finishing though.

Just look at every other team in the top 4. Presented with those chances they would have buried the match in the first 20 minutes. Similar to what spurs have done to soton at home minus harry kane.

Its hard to understand why we find it so difficult to score goals. We create a shitload of chances every match.
Yeah the finishing has been particularly disappointing and this is why I am more accommodating of this switch to a 3-4-3 especially if we do get our attackers back. Rashford showed, today, the danger we could pose on the break with a quicker forward uptop. Zlatan is obviously undroppable but perhaps we could play him and Martial/Rashford with Mlhitaryan in behind? This could also help us keep solid down the middle when we play Pogba deep, a quicker forward playing alongside Zlatan could also help us profit more from Pogba's balls over the top.

Playing 3 at the back so late in the season must be quite a shock for the players come to think of it.

I don't know how many of you have watched Boro on regular basis, but Adama could be quite dangerous. It is the reason why Mourinho brought Rojo, to support Young on the wing as that's where Adama plays.

The team was efficient, Lingard played really well and Fellaini was reliable (go figure).
Yes, I don't agree that we should sit back and defend the lead versus control possession and always look to hit on the counter, but I am not convinced the squad that we had on the pitch would've been comfortable of executing such tactics.
At the end of the day we've had games where we dominated and didn't get anything and today was the opposite - not so convincing but getting the most out of the game - 3 points.
So quite satisfied being out of the 6th and knowing Liverpool or City will drop points and having a game on hand. It will be a needed break for some of the players and we can start again.

You thought that was comfortable? Why the hell was I so nervous then?

My nerves could barely take it. Game was easy until we we gave up midfield and went to the back 6. Completely unnecesarry at 2-0. Should have just went to a 5 and kept our shape and the ball and closed it out.

I was as nervous as hell myself. But when I think about it after the match, how many chances did they create? How many saves did DDG make? I remember only one in the fist half and one from a weak header from Negredo. Their only chance was Smalling's howler. Therefore I say a comfortable win. The nerves were definitely there btw. You could say it from Jose's reaction after the goal...Mine was similar :)

I do not agree with you. I think we were comfortable, they just poured long balls in and they did not have a single chance created. I think Jose was spot on and would rather trust him than most of the tactical geniuses here...
Tbf in his post match interview Jose mentioned he thinks it was a mistake for us to play the way we did after the substitution. I guess we can disagree on whose fault that was, but what transpired wasn't the desired outcome.

Here's a nuanced post that sums everything up well

Why even have a forum then? No one can say anything against the "perfect" managers unless they are better than them, right? This kind of reasoning is what is sad and is easy way out of argument. "Why don't you do better then him if you know so much...blah blah" Bunch of bollocks.

It's kind of down to the law of averages. If we keep shape and maintain some possession Boro don't get many chances to hurt us. If we invite them to launch 30 balls into the box the chances are one of them will eventually lead to something. Certainly made it more exciting :)

Delighted with the win and the performance.

For the performance - for United being dependent upon Ibra for goals, we had 3 players who hadn't scored all season in the league step up. Something that has been required in many games this season but, delivered today. As to the defensive approach - it was the right move absolutely. Negredo had been a nuisance/threat even on his own and with Gestede coming on, it was needed. The problem was the outlet - Rashford couldn't win a ball and not enough pressure afterwards allowing them to get those crosses in. Rashford really needs to score one or two, maybe he can for England because it's eat at him and he wasn't himself in those latter stages defending from the front like he often does.

I truly don't get the Smalling bashing though - he couldn't set his feet and yes looked awkward trying to clear with his right but, the ball came quick and in that between spot where most players usually go with their dominant foot. It happens all game long to everyone - just take a look at Alderweild for Southhampton's goal today. It was Baily and Jones who were more unsteady most of the game.

4th place I still think will be difficult even if we win our games in hand and Liverpool lose today. The number of fixtures and the teams we play against has us really up against it and all those home draws will cost us but, today was not one of those days and it's something really to smile about - especially with the way the 3rd goal went in :)

TBF, I have seen far more "happy with the win" than "everything is rosey" posts.

And, it's kind of a catch 22 for Jose. If he subs in an attacker and Boro scores on a counter, people would being going nuts about that.

I've figured out what Jose is up to, he's obviously been taking some tips from the lads over at CERN. I reckon he's thinking if he can get as many cb's on the pitch as he can and they all happen to collide with each other at the exact same time then they will form one proper defender.

Only logical conclusion really.

the international break comes at a good time.

I sure hope we are not going to get some of our players injured.

Pogba, Mata, Martial and Blind should get some rest, though Lingard might as well but Jose seems to think he's travel with the England camp. I worry about Rojo and Bailly who will have a lot of miles to cover most likely.

Fantastic result and performance by the lads after a gruelling 10 days. Squad players stepping in and performing well is exactly what we need going into the final two months of the season. The likes of Lingard, Fellaini, and Young are going to be vital for us maintaining a good run.
