First half too many players were off the tempo...

The only three up to the speed of the game were Herrera, Mata and Valencia. They all put in a solid shift and covered some real ground going both ways.

Herrera was an absolute machine no idea how his legs keep going like that for the full 90, he's the only player who does the high press with aggression which led to us getting possession for the goal.

Mata did well defensively as well as with his intelligent runs, movement and passing - eventually got the winning goal. This guy is too intelligent not to play - he dictates play in the final third better than anyone else we have currently.

Valencia was a great outlet on that right side and has the pace and power to beat a man and hold the ball. He has improved his positioning and defending heaps since being transitioned into that position. I'm sure he will still make mistakes in that position but he is undoubtedly our best choice at right back.

Blind plays better on the left or at least LCB. Had a few times where he was awkwardly trying to move it to his left foot and a few times he casually lost possession - especially in the first half.

Shaw was being had for toast by Navas in the first half, he looks like he's carrying a bit of weight and has lost some of that electric pace. No doubt this is a fitness issue after his injury woes, hopefully will improve with time. Thought he grew into the game well.

Zlatan and Pogba also grew into the game - Pogba did keep working and seemed to cover some very good ground even if his end product was lacking at times, still developing as a player and needs to build consistency into his performances. Also probably needs a rest.

I agree with all the statements made here. I was at the game yesterday and it was far from a good performance from us. Some positive moments especially 2nd half where we picked up the pace and put more pressure on the city backline. It seemed like the game was there for the taking even in the first half but we never really turned the screw which was disappointing. Ultimately I believe Mourinho will be successful when he plays players in their best positions. A combination of Carrick Herrera/Pogba and Mata would be my ideal midfield 3 now after recent performances. Pogba doesn't look a number 10 for us and I feel some of his best moments last night were when he dropped back into midfield and moved the ball on. When he begins to play with less ego on the pitch he will excel and look a bargain at 90m. Sooner the better.

I really don't understand why we think Pogba can play as a no10. He can't and he wont grow into it or learn to because he isn't the type of player who can play in that role. It's as dumb as anything LVG used to do...He's a £90m midfielder so use him in fecking midfield.

Still a concerning performance imo. We had to go full throttle in second half to pull that victory out of the bag and I don't see us being able to put that level of workrate for 90 minutes consistently.

Why not?
Going full throttle is the way we should be playing.
Have standards slipped so low now that we don't expect our players to even bother?
Are our players so unfit that they cant play at a high intensity for more than a few minutes per month?

I dont care if its a kick about in the park, or if City field their under 12's, United v City is ALWAYS a game I want to win (only LFC makes me feel the same way). After Sunday this feels fabulous. We played well too, which is always a bonus. Actually I thought the signs were good pre-Chelsea generally, so it was gut wrenching to get rolled over 4-0. This is a great boost for fans and players alike. Our season starts now! (20/1 for the Prem btw, I'm 'avin some of that. Keep the faith!)
ps. If we dont beat Burnley you wont see me for dust :p

I think Jose played it well. We all know we played our first team against their kids but the media seem to....forgot about it. The headlines make our win yesterday look as if it was a battle of England. We halted a winless run, we beat great rival, we got a much needed ego-boosting win.

Please with the 2nd half last night - if nothing else it gives the players a confidence boost before heading into a game on the weekend where we'll have to break down walls again. Maybe the realisation that we can play nice one-touch football when we want to will see us take a few more risks against a more defensive team.

Herrera and Mata were good, Rojo and Blind too. I'm pleased to see we actually used our physicality in the 2nd half and City couldn't cope.

Also, how poor was Sane!?! I accept that his transfer wasn't on Pogba-levels but it was still a feckload of money and he was anonymous. Why no focus on him, I wonder...

The problem in using him in midfield is that he's a passenger for a lot of the time - he doesn't defend space very well and he tends to stroll around when we have possession. So it means our other midfielders need to work so much harder to cover his lack of energy. At least in a more attacking role he can operate 'freely' without impacting our shape as much.

In short, he needs to pull his finger out and run more.

We need a Carrick replacement. Instantly improves us in the build up. Midfield three with Hererra and Pogba could be excellent.. they have the energy to let him play. Just a shame his age means he can't do it week in week out.

Really? Last time I saw stats he was covering MORE ground than literally anyone else in our team?

I also don't remember any game where he's played in midfield and our other midfielders have had to work extra hard as a result, so I don't buy it.

The City league game would be the only one and there were a lot of things a lot of our players were doing wrong in that one...and even then I bet he covered the most ground of any of them.

I thought all in all it was a good game and win for us. 1-0, 3-0, doesn't matter much, and it easily could've been at least 2. Ibra still not finishing off the one you would think he would 75% of the time, but really all around good effort for him I thought. Mata was MOTM for me. Even without the goal nobody works harder and his feel and ball control is usually excellent. Arm band material for me. I don't think I've ever said a kind word about Rojo, but I couldn't believe how well he held up at CB. He and Blind excelled there together as a team. Good to see and credit where due. De Gea, back to being his normal greatness as well, even though he wasn't tested much at all. City didn't play their best side from the start, but they finished the last 30 or so with Sterling and Aguero on. Our backs shut them down as well. It starts in the back. Get that sorted and the rest will follow. I liked what I saw, it's at least a start and stopped the bleeding.

The first half was as bad as anything we've seen this season when you take the opposition and that fact we were at home into account. Second half better but there's still no sign of any fluency in our attacking play.

Carrick should be starting PL games and be rested in the cups.

Happy United won, but the first half was an embarrasment for English football. From both sides. Utter and complete shite. The Dutch 2nd division has better football.

That MEN report....

The guy is the correspondent / reporter for Athletic's games, of course, but excuses, excuses, excuses....

As soon as we get a link to the MEN's United reporter, can someone put it up, please....

Glad to hear we improved in 2nd (I could only watch 1st half).

I hope this give us a bit more confidence, we sure as hell need it. If we can build on this with three back-to-back wins going into the international break (definitely doable, with Burnley, Fener and Swansea) then we'll be in some decent form approaching the mental xmas period.

I confess I don't have any stats, I'm generally not committed enough to forum posting to thoroughly research before posting. Just my general sentiment on watching him recently - he seems to labour around quite a lot, covering space without any real intention on closing down or pressuring.

Happy to be proven wrong, just feel he could work a bit harder when in the middle of a congested pitch.

Rojo was excellent. He's always been decent at centre half I think, just left back he's particularly poor, although he's an excellent crosser.

Someone stated our one touch stuff has been poor this season. I think quite the opposite. Since the Leicester game we have been superb in spells.

I think all the signs are in place that this side can be something really special. Can't wait for Saturday.

Exactly. Our game is much better and it takes time to properly play as a team. Like the link up play from our Spanish players.

Nope. That would be Fellaini.

As a team we're lazy as feck, having covered less ground than any other team in the league. The fact that Fellaini manages to make the top 10 for individual players is a damning indictment of the other players in our team who are supposed to doing a lot of running. Especially someone, like Pogba, who has played in every game.

You might be thinking about his debut., against Southampton. Fairly sure I saw a stat from that game about Pogba covering more ground than most other players. But he's obviously not maintained that work-rate. For whatever reason.

Jose still has quite a lot of work to do to make this team function effectively.

It was nice to see that the composure of Blind helped Rojo, as it had done with Bailly earlier in the season. Shame we can't get a WC CB that would raise the game of the other CBs.

Shaw was dreadful in the first half, but it looks like he was spoken to at half-time as he was a lot tighter and defensive in the second half.

Rashford really doesn't work well on the wing. Would love him to move back into the striker role. Ibra and Mata could then feed him better.

Midfield were disappointing in the first half, City were just flowing through us, even if there was no end product. Herrera starting to be the player we expected when he first got here, but he could start to get himself into a lot of trouble with some of his tackles and barges.

Valencia is having a bit of a purple patch.

Pogba still disappoints in work effort and contribution to the team. Seems to be playing in second gear most of the game. Not sure if it is because he is over confident or doesn't know what the other players are going to do when they have the ball.

 - yeah..that's right..target all the fast east asian guys why don't you. You could do that at any of the top clubs home games....
Not City, they only have strong local Mancunians to fill their empty seats.

Those stats are from over a month ago so would have been what, 4-5 games into the season? They are also going by total distance covered rather than average distance covered so Pogba has no chance of being on that having missed the first game. Fellaini would have been on it because he was our only midfielder who'd started all the games at that point...so it doesn't really tell you anything at all.

I'd be interested to know who covers what distance on average in our team if there is anywhere that provides those statistics. Sky did something and showed Pogba as being the ONLY United player who covered more than 10k in a game, but I'm not sure if they were just talking about a one off game or an average. TBH even if they were that's a pretty damming stat on the team as a whole.

Pogba doesn't look lazy to me. He does look clueless as a no10 though. He just gets the ball and tries to bundle past people and ends up cornering himself...doesn't seem to know where to stand when we're in possession and seems reluctant to drop deep when required in the way an actual no10 would. It's a waste having him there.

Despite what the tabloids would have us believe, this does not - for me - make up for the loss on Sunday. I'd take the three points over this win any day. What we did see was - and I am getting bored with saying it-- Carrick must play in the PL (and interchange with Basti when either/if of them run out of steam. I though Zlatan had a much better game than the TV commentators would have us believe: some good runs and flicks and one or two brilliant defence-splitting passes. It's also time to give Shaw a run at FB and if Rojo plays it should be at CB. I don't think we should get too excited - City were very very poor (not one shot on target; I could have been playing in goal). Over all, pleased to win but it's hardly a season-changer... more interested by how we play against Burnley on Saturday (is this our first Saturday 3pm of the season?)

About the goal. What happened between Herrera and Fernando? It looked like Herrera just smashes him out of the way like an NFL blocker so Mata can shoot. But Fernando, or anyone else in blue, didn't try to claim anything, despite Mike Dean's long pause before giving it. I was expecting it to be disallowed as it happened.

It looked like mutual contact to me. Hard to tell who instigated it. Could have gone either way, and for once it went ours. I'll take it.

Impressed with Rojo today which is something I didn't think I'd ever say!
Just wanted to quote this, for assurance. I was incredibly surprised too. Way, way superior as a CB than LB. The problem is, it seems that no matter where, he'll eventually feck up.

I'll definitely take it too. That sort thing nearly always goes the defenders way, so it was surprising. The time Dean took to wave it as a goal, it was almost as if he was waiting to a City player to claim the foul. I think he could well have chalked it off if they had.

Great midfield combination, at this point I would love to cover Carrick with Schweinstiger, with Herrera and Pogba completing the 3. Having Mkhitaryan/Martial on the other side of Mata with Rashford up top, could turn out amazing.

Zlatan has his moments, but doesn't seem very focused.
