LC W League Cup Round of 16

Manchester United 5:2 Leicester City

Post-match discussion

Wed, 30 October 2024

Whilst it was a second string Leicester side for much of that game, I don't want to downplay the improved performance too much, we've been making super hard work of lower league opposition and shite Premier League teams for a long time.

Could have done much better on the goals we conceded, I'm sure Leicester would say the same for a couple of ours.

Good performances from Fernades, Casemiro, Garnacho and Ugarte. These are the players with the experience and/or quality we need to do well if we're to win games, so was nice to see them all on it for once.

It only makes a difference if we put in a good shift against Chelsea, but it was clearly much better, even if the opposition was pretty rubbish.

Refreshing to see a measured post-match reaction from fans on here rather than everyone clamouring for Ruud to take charge

Leicester were playing like relegation fodder

A much needed win against very poor opposition.
Now the hard work starts, starting with a tough test against Chelsea on Sunday.
Lack of physicality will be our main weakness as we saw in the 2nd half tonight against Leicester’s 2nd string.

Just love seeing some goals. I think it was pretty smart to play such a strong team, get a bit of confidence into the team.

Great performance and result even though it was against a team far tge below the level of quality that Chelsea will have on Sunday, it was nice to be able to enjoy watching my team play for the first time in ages.

Enjoyable evening in the league cup again. Need to transfer this confidence to the premier league now.

I recall a lot of negativity about Ugarte’s ball playing skills when he was first announced as joining us. Thought he hit some superb passes tonight. He could turn out to be the best of our signings this summer. Great in the tackle and freed Casemiro up to do his thing. Bruno, Casemiro, Ugarte and Amad (when he came on) were the standouts for me. Garnacho not far behind.

A win is a win. Decent performance, Casemiro's goal was an absolute peach.

I can't get over the state of that Leicester team though. Ward must be one of the worst goalkeepers ever to play for a PL team. Their defending at times was borderline hilarious.

Yeah, I never saw him for PSG but I remember watching him for Sporting a few times and he was absolutely brilliant at winning the ball back and then playing simple but tidy passes to keep possession, often under pressure.

Was quite surprised seeing the narrative about him not being good on the ball on here when he signed.

He's not gonna be pinging 50 yard balls everywhere, but we've more than enough players that love to try that already.

Leicester were poor and we were excellent. It felt as if Ruud had released the handbrake, with the team attacking at a quicker pace than before. Casemiro MOM, with excellent performances from the rest. Only two below par for me were Zirkzee and Rashford.

this is the first time in 18 months or so, that I missed a game that I really wanted to watch. ETH really ruined my passion for the team that I’ve supported for over 27 years, and almost never missed a game.
I’m happy that we scored so many goals, and I really hope we can see those players enjoy their football and start playing exciting football again. I can live with bad results, but at least show me that you are interested, and that you really want to win.

I love the fact that Ruud could give us a high scoring game, hopefully he can being us some results or fun against Chelsea.
Win, lose or draw, just get me excited and give me passion and then I’ll be happy.

I didn’t see the game but saw the goals. Was there any difference in play or tactics to what we had under TH.
You could see us winning well tonight. It usually happens when a manager leaves

Only caught the first half, but I thought we looked pretty hungry for goals and they looked absolutely awful. Dalot very suspect defensively and Bayindir not really challenging Onana.

Did Ruud mention QPR in his post match interview when talking about our profligacy? (West Ham, Fenerbache, QPR)

We’ve been burnt by caretaker legends and we’ve been burnt by hipsters killing it in smaller leagues. Measured is the only way to go.

They picked a weird time to sack Ten Hag. Last game was a bent VAR call and diabolical finishing, and surely this same ragtag bunch of misfits would have stomped Leicester just the same.

Would you fire him if he by some miracle manages 3 wins out of 4 in the next 4 including today?

Agreed. I want to see more of Casemiro - Ugarte duo. They reminded me of a lesser Schwein - Martinez pair at Bayern, years ago. Both have a bit creativity while still being defensively experienced and astute. It may not to everyone's taste to leave out Mainoo, but i think his future should be a bit more advance.

Case - Uga should be the pair going forward and was suggesting it on that Amorim thread.

Every time the manager gets sacked the team performs immediately as if to tell outsiders that it’s not the issue with the players. And the performance degrades afterwards. Predictable cycle

A very good and fun match to watch ruined by the fact that it was so obvious and we’ve seen it before after a manager gets sacked.

We finished our chances, that was the major difference to me to be honest.

But there did seem to be a bit more freedom and a bit more vibes!

Nice win. Hope Ruud can enjoy his time as our interim manager, and then move on and evolve in his coaching career. Always my legend!!!

Exactly. Once the new manager is mean to them the soft bastards start pouting and the performances get worse and worse until we're all praying for the manager to go.

You say this as if we've had the same group of players for 5-6 years now.

It's getting tiring that people keep using the same repeated clichés.

Enjoyed it. We looked dangerous any time we attacked.

But, we still looked hugely open. Maybe they thought they could get away with that against a second string Leicester side....which is fair fecks...but too many times they played one pass and were running at our back 4 which is a long running theme.

Bruno controlled the game, as you might expect against Leicester with 6 odd changes but just hope that acts as a catalyst for a jump start.

Amad looked very lively. Trying a bit too hard for a goal perhaps but I don't mind that at 5-2...he certainly put himself in the right areas and was unlucky not to score.

Zirkzee still looks a bit lost. Thought he had some better moments second half but hes a long way from the quality we need at the moment. Hopefully he finds his feet and gets more confident but it's a concern.

Another game under Ugarte's belt. All in all positives which were desperately needed.

Thought we could have been 5 or 6 up by HT.

When we were attacking we moved the ball quickly. Players for once didn't look as if they were trying to remember several pages of instruction before they played the ball

Not saying Ruud should be the new manager but I'd like him to have some role at the club. If not as an assistant maybe the academy to bring young strikers along, which we are clearly lacking... unless of course he wants to be the boss somewhere again
