Huddersfield Town 2:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sat, 21 October 2017

People love to agenda post. Have it out for certain players and they'll give them crap despite pretty much the whole team being not at the races. Only players who weren't terrible were Lingard, Lukaku for the cross, Smalling and De Gea.

Lingard not terrible? What about his appalling feck up, when all he had to do was to play a simple through ball into Rashford's forward run down the middle? That was a really good chance screwed up, when he hit a soft pass to a Huddersfield defender.

Mourinho seems so unhappy with some of his players hopefully this defeat is just a wake up call and not a start to a predictable downfall, we have Spurs and Chelsea coming we can't look back too much.
God how much I miss the old Manchester United, I would kill for those days to be back and re cherish every fecking single moment.

Me too my friend. The days of free flowing attacking football are not going to return under Mourinho.

Deserved loss from a failure to impose themselves on a far weaker side. Yeah, they were up for it, but United should have dealt with them. Two soft goals to give up and rarely threatening the opposition.

This is the cost of lacking fluency. If you don't work the ball meaningfully, simply having it is a liability.

Lukaku is getting starved. They need to get it sorted. He can score all sorts of goals. It doesn't matter how, just carve him a good chance. Having him parked up top watching the match is a sure fire way to give up points there for the taking.

so with pogba out, are we a one man side. The title is citys to lose

If Fellaini was playing, we'd have won.
I am not sure (someone needs to check up), but I think when Fellaini plays, we have a 100% win rate.
Jose is using these 2 players interchangeably. When one is injured, the other comes on. The problem is that right now, both are injured.

City for the title is a good bet. They would have steamrolled Huddersfield today.

I'm glad he said what he did.

It is unacceptable to lose to an inferior side because their attitude and effort was higher than that of a Manchester united first eleven.

Ferguson would have said the same. In fact he did many times. The away defeat to City when Neville gifted Goater the opening goal, he said he'd a mind to let the fans in the dressing room to tell the players what they thought of them.

It's all been a little ropey since we got back from the international break.
Defence looks a bit worrying too now, unless Bailly or Jones are minor. Lindelof has looked dodgy from day 1, and I know everyone gives it the "Vidic was dodgy at the start", but that has no impact on this situation.

City for the title is a good bet. They would have steamrolled Huddersfield today.
They would have done as they have good attacking fullbacks and good attacking outlets who pepper the other goal constantly and at pace. The other side cannot catch their breath.

Burnley hung on for a long time, but City wear teams down and then the other side collapse. Think we did that earlier in the season, more through keeping the ball, now with the injuries in midfield we cannot seem to do that.

No excuses, Huddersfield deserved the win. Two individual errors cost us the game.

People posting like we've never lost to newly promoted sides like Wolves, Norwich, Derby or Leicester before.
Fight to be the most negative and who can call the most players trash.

He's pissed off and rightly so. Says all the right things in this interview.

Wow. He is being so honest about it, mentioned very very important words, motivation, desire, aggression we lacked all of them and I'm glad that he pointed at it, because each team he previously managed you can feel those attitudes taking real big part of his success.

You need EVERYTHING in your locker. We have the players minus prob. a genuine winger for different options all in one match.
But today the wrong decisions or the right ones but too slow. Long balls are fine and finally when we tried them they were proving effective.
Well thats not exactly true now is it? You are mixing up being effective and causing mayhem

The key was not bringing on Blind as he has played these type of games at CB. Lindelof can't do these yet.

This I agree with.
Blind should've been the one to come on. He certainly would not have made the error which Lindeloff did.

We just haven't been any good since Fellaini has been out.

It started with Pogba. He got injured.
Fellaini was his replacement and we continued winning.
But when Fellaini got injured and there was no replacement, we have scored 2 goals in 3 games.
When Fellaini gets back, i expect us to drastically improve our goal scoring.
Today, we had no aggression and Fellaini is the guy who brings that to our team.

This I agree with.

It is as though he is trying to get him used to the PL, but it was to our detriment today. He really seems to have lost faith in Blind, but he couldn't have done any worse today.

This has been true since August. A great pre-season and an unbelievably kind start to the league/European campaigns have masked some glaring weaknesses in the squad. I think we're a better side than we were last year, but the state of the table in 3 weeks time (at which point we'll also have played Spurs and Chelsea) will be a far more accurate reflection of where the side actually is relative to the rest of the big 6.

Their interplay of neat one time touches and passes is just so good. You just know they can score and once they do, it opens it up. Granted, when we play the poor teams at home, we dominate, but city dominate home and away. They absolutely dominated Chelsea in Stamford Bridge.

I do not like saying but I have to go on what I see. City are better than us offensively. They get goals much easier. I have said it repeatedly, when we are away from home, it will be a tough match, because we have a different philosophy to them.

Defensively we are better than them, but their offense is just sublime, as much as I hate saying it. At least it is not Liverpool though.

I get what you're saying but we've been garbage up front. Even if we didn't concede those 2 goals thanks to errors how would we score?
Huddersfield went vastly more negative once they got the goals. They were open before that.

Once they got the goals and shut up shop it became much harder. Especially with how terrible we've been going forward since the Liverpool game.

The thing that bothers me is the lack of fight that the team has. This is a problem we have had since SAF retired and at best we do is two steps forward then two back. We started the season well but the quality of our play and our intensity is sliding backwards

Can you find/post the Herrera's one? Thanks in advance.

Edit:

Attitude stuff is worrying thing to hear. We're trailing City going this game and expect the result given the tough games ahead so we can stay in the race by New Year. Result like this and we're shooting ourselves in the foot. 6+ gap in point by New Year and we failed as challenger even if we finished second in May.

I think we are going to break our record transfers window, Herrea, Feliani, Mata, Blind, Zlatan Carrick and possibly Shaw will be a free agent next summer if United didnt activate option extension or they refuse to sign a new contract so we will need to recruit a new player to replace them.
That won't happen. We're not getting rid of 7 first team players in one window.

Too many average players with a manager past his peak.

Pathetic performance and our response after going down 2-0 was terrible.

Don't think Fellaini or Herrera will go unless they want to. Not sure he trusts Blind, Carrick will retire next summer, we have given Zlatan a contract to get him fit, think he will be gone to the US in the summer. Mata, not sure, he will be mighty pissed with him after today. Shaw no chance he is here next summer.

Defensively you’re better? De Gea is class mate - but your defence today was young, smalling and Jones and Valencia. That’s not better...

Poor performance form the team, but Mourinho had an absolute shocker today and has had an absolute shocker of a week, and needs to seriously wind his neck in.

First, he shouldn't have brought Lindelof on when Jones was injured. We have all watched the same games as him and Lindelof's performance today was not a surprise. He isn't ready to play in the PL and that has been fairly apparent every time he's appeared. Blind isn't great at centreback but as an emergency stand in, mid game, was very obviously the better choice.

Then, at half time, he changes the formation to try and shore up the defence, despite us being 2-0 down and Huddelsfield already showing they had no interest in pressuring our back line or contesting the middle of the pitch while they were ahead. There was literally no point in making this change at this point. It was llike he thoought the score would magically go back to 0-0 if he did this.

Then after 25 minutes of us not being able to do anything because Jose had taken his own attack and midfield out of the game, he changed it back, as if we'd suddenly on 70 minutes gone 2-0 down.

Then when that worked and we got back in the game and were pressuring them, instead of letting us carry on, he sticks Smalling up top and has us aim 60 yard hoofs at him. Completely changing how we were playing for the third time in the half and again making it much easier for Huddelsfield to relieve pressure on themselves. By the end none of our players looked like they had a clue what they were meant too be doing anymore.

I also don't understand the changes at half time as these had nothing to do with the change in system and offered nothing new to the team. All it meant was we had no way of providing an extra attacking threat late in the game as Jose had subbed OFF our extra attacking threat, when we were 2-0 down! It would have been very useful to be able to have Rashford and Martial on the pitch together towards the end, but Jose, for reasons known only to himself, deliberately made this impossible.

Last weekend he didn't want to win at Anfield, which completely blunted our momentum. Turned our positive start to the season into a wave of negative criticism. Alll in order to achieve a 0-0 draw which will be of little help come May.

This week he managed the game as if he thought he was playing himself at a game of chess. Over complicating changes that never needed to be made. Taking off players just to make a point to no one and crippling our ability to get back in the game by doing so.

In the week his playing himself off to PSG.

Not impressed at all. IF we wanted a manager who was more interested in massaging his own ego than doing what is best for the team, we could have just not sacked LVG.

As a system defensively we are better.

My point with Lingard was that he was at least trying to take risks and put himself about. Obviously what he tried didn't work out but he was the only one of the 5 behind Lukaku who looked anywhere near creating something for us until Rashford came on.

How many fans think that today was in part at least, a 'left over ' from the Liverpool game? I'm not taking about the 'Alamo defence' we put up, but the overall feeling there are some games we aren't good enough to win, so we settle for a draw!

IMO the 'negativity' left over from Anfield, gave Huddersfield all the extra Umph they were looking for. Their first game against us in 40 years, the wind and the rain howling in off the Pennines, Huddersfield players 'getting stuck in to those fairies from United', talk all week of another No.10 maybe coming in, I bet that improved Mata and Myki's confidence.
All the banter between Jose and Conte, in the press, the rumours of Jose's talks with PSG, Jose himself talking about maybe leaving... well not quite right away.. maybe in 5 years? Then to cap it all he talks about 'not being able to rotate because of injuries! In other words he told the team he put out, publically, that "you are the make do and mend brigade"!

Not great preparation, especially with only two days to recover from Benfica game.

I like Jose I think he is a great manager, but he does 'run off at the mouth a lot', sometimes its the wrong time and sometimes its more about him than the team... that I don't like!

Alright Opta, are you confident we'll see off Spurs and Chelsea without slipping further behind?
No clue TBH. We'll find out about this team then. This could be the slap upside the head they need. Or it could be a death knell. 50/50 on which happens.
