CL L Champions League Group A

Manchester United 2:3 Galatasaray

Post-match discussion

Tue, 03 October 2023

Just goes to show that keeping the ball out of the next through good shot stopping is critical. De Gea was obviously a shell of his former self, but I would've had far more confidence in him in goal this year, and I think the players would as well.

DDG would have been just as likely to play that awful pass (he did it against Sevilla), but I agree that it looks like a very sideways move.

I don't think his form was particularly foreseeable, he was great last season and it seemed that he had the confidence to handle the pressure, but I genuinely think the spotlight he's under at United has shaken him.

Horrible result. Probably end of our UCL campaign, but the drama here is also too much.

In reality this game was a progress. Hojlund scored two goals.

We are not done. Just very unlucky, injured, and rebuilding with too many new players.
To quote Roy Keane: "It's his JOB!" He had a great game individually, but that is NOT progress no matter how much copium you huff. It's not just down to bad luck or injury, the manager has royally fecked us with his bad squad building and tactics.

I feel bad for Hojlund. He looks the part and runs his socks off. Had a good night, scored 3 in 2 games, and it’s for nothing.

He really was. Did he one hit decent corner or set piece all night?
/don't think so.

If I saw him I would ask him what the feck is going on between his damn ears. Like dude is fecking up all over the place. I really like him, but feck me this was terrible.

Can't put shit on ETH when you have players being so dumb. Nothing and no one is gonna be able to change that (sigh).

Happened to so many players, even in the days we weren't winning. It really does take a special kind of player to handle United.

If we finish 4th we don't have to piss about in the Europa League. Silver lining.

Devastated with that defeat. Completely threw the game away, we were playing well, se were battering them and then we threw it away. Hojlund and Mount were very good but the back line was abysmal to concede three or four terrible defensive mistakes. Onana should hang his head in shame, he has cost us a point from this game.

They are going to get the manager sacked, but it’s not his fault, this is the players not doing their jobs properly.

Some of the comments are unbelievable.

amrabat just come in, mount has just come in, hojlund has just come in, give them time, mount did ok got stuck in tonight, hannibal was good great energy.

onana well say no more can only improve i guess.

attacking wise we were alot better could have easily blown them away and scholes is speaking sense.
Nice there is some positivity from him.

I thought our attacking play was very exciting, and there is no doubt Rasmus is a signing and a half. Galatasaray did very well, but there's no doubt we aided them with our absolutely shambolic defensive midfield and defence. It feels like on some sections of the pitch the players and playing with one another for the very first time! They haven't anything that even remotely resembles cohesion. Just the sense of nerves as the play moves towards our box is uncanny. You can see it and feel it in the players. They don't trust one another.

That's just not an accurate assessment of the match, we created loads of chances and opportunities, and were undone by individual errors and a lack of concentration.

The concentration thing is definitely something the manager needs to work on, it seems to be a recurring theme this season, when it was a strength lasr season.

Nah, we need to finish 3rd. I don't mind the Europa. Imagine us turning our noses up at any bloody competition. it might be for the best if drop down there to be honest. At least gives us another outlet to win something.

Entertaining game yet we were shit on so many level. Bottlejob this. If this does not stop after one of our LBs is bck then ETH can go.

ETH is on a very very thin ice, he needs to make up with Sancho, and quickly, he needs to lose his arrogance and shut up shop, he doesn’t need to do any press conferences, he now needs to do his talking on the pitch. The irony, everyone talking about 5th place will probably get CL, no one thought about ETH man united team literally moving EPL from 1st to third in the UEFA Coefficient ranking points.

ETH is trying to be too clever and if he doesn’t pick a balanced teams with defenders that can defend, he’s now.Lost 6 out of 10 games this season. He has to figure it out and quickly, sending Alvaro Fernandez on loan right now looks another stupid decision.

He’s bought so much absolute average shite that he needs them to start working hard or he’s gone, 2 more defeats in the next two games and he’s gone whatever we think and how we think we should back him.

Antony on 200k per week, Onana on 200k per week jobs for the boys, these players are never worth these wages, less so than Sancho and Rashford.

I don’t blame Amrabat he’s playing out of position, and he shows heart. But ETH needs to now show something, this season I get the impression all his hard work from last season has faded away as he got complacent and actually thought his team was ready for a title challenge, he’s completely misread the situation and the actual strength of his team?

Best we've attacked all season.

Worst defensive display I've seen since Sevilla.

This post is absolutely spot on. I realise people are very upset and frustrated, but Delano's post above sums it up. We just appear to be unable to find the balance of being able to attack and defend well whilst creating from our midfield. If one end if hot the other is cold. Drives me up the wall.

Yeah I agree with you there, there's still a good chance that Onana will come good after his rocky start, but there's a good argument that we should get him out of the spotlight for a few matches.

I wasn't very hopeful when I saw their squad strength this morning. There were some very good performances from a couple of our players but the lack of form / confidence in players we rely on, such as Bruno, Rashford, Varane and the shocking performance of Onana out weighed the positives.

There’s a serious disconnect between the manager and the players. Onana was shit tonight but he’s not a shot keeper…but he is shattered mentally. Bruno and Rashford…no explanation there.

Shite. And the team is put under pressure by a weak CM later on in the game and CB who are out of position. OK Amrabat isn't a left back and got found out later on.. early doors he was fine..

ETH has questions that need to be Answered. Onana is going to cost him his job, last season was so good compared to this.

Licha needed back , Shaw needed back and AWB.. a back 4 of those with Varane is so much better, Bruno is pants so is Rashford.. relying on Youngsters to pull us out of the shite it's not right. Mount who I think we did not need to buy had a good game and should have scored at least 1..
Poor again under pressure and Brentford now who's been poor themselves so far will be rubbing the hands for Saturday.. if ETH doesn't pick up a win before the break he's seriously looking at the sack ..

Our two CL games have been fecking mental :wenger:

I still think ETH will turn this around. Yes we have been shite, but we've also got ridiculous numbers of injuries for so early in the season, which means we've not really had the chance to gel as a team - not to mention the off-field stuff too. Also I feel like we are going through one of those phases where our opponents seem to get all the luck - deflected goals, worldies, dodgy decisions etc etc.

It is a bit weird that in this age of DoFs we seem to have gone even further the other way and allowed the manager even more of an influence on transfers than we did before. I'm still right behind ETH but if things were to go from bad to worse ( a la Ole's last few games) and we had no choice but to get rid then I feel like we'll be stuck with a lot of players that a new manager might not fancy much.

No he does not!

What on earth are you talking about? Sancho has been quite out of order. He is the one who needs to make amends.

Giving in to these players is one of the things that's made the post SAF era really challenging. We have stop that shit, even if we have a crap season.

All the effort of taking the lead in the game was sucked away by our awful defense and goalkeeper.

ETH has some big calls to make now for the Brentford game.

I would, honestly, play Maguire or Evans alongside Varane in the middle, shift Dalot to LB and Lindelof to RB. Partner Amrabat with Casemiro in the middle for goodness sake, and let him help shield the defense.

Drop Onana and give Bayindir a chance.
Bruno is offering nothing at the moment and should be dropped too.

The only silver linings I can take away from this match are Højlund and Mount. Both looked really good.

Ten Hag knows we're better with Hannibal and Garnacho over Rashford and Bruno but he didn't have the gonads to drop Fernandes or Rashford.

To take Hannibal off at HT seals it for me than Ten Hag has lost his conscience. Bruno had an awful half and should have been the one making way for a sub.

I'm going to the game on Saturday vs Brentford and if he picks Amrabat and left back again, or Bruno and Rashford over Garnacho and Hannibal I'm no longer in full support of him.

Ten Hags been unlucky to not have any of the 3 left backs fit but he should be managing better than this. Even if it means playing McTominay at CB, Dalot at LB and Lindelof at RB. There are other alternatives to try.

He could choose to play more defensively while we don't have a first choice defence. The fact is he hasn't reacted well enough with his decisions and we're now doubtful for top 4 and progressing in the Champions League.

We have to win our next 3 games Vs Copenhagen and Galatasary. That's not looking very likely.

I don't think we should sack Ten Hag. But if we don't get top 4 or through this group stage then I think he's not a good enough decision maker for us and should go.

 Funny shit this, this place drooling and yappin about top 4 as some achievement/goal and for what exactly, this? or wait no, its so we can recruit world class players plus money, oh yea we are great at that. This circus is worse than Arsenal under Wenger, his last X years, so pointless

Come on dude, the Sancho thing is entirely on Sancho.

Until the disastrous latter part of the game I was actually feeling positive about the team. There was some lovely interchanging passing moves that led to a number of opportunities that we didn't capitalise on. Ten Hag made an early change and Eriksen was producing the goods. Some positive signs. Hojlund and Mount looked good. The rest... Also a lot to be concerned about. Our ball playing keeper is not having the desired impact and we're still struggling to play out from the back. Galatasaray weren't even pressing that well but still caused issues.

I agree.

No need to be hasty about anything.

Was out all tonight and just checked the score… Erm when did we start losing to Turkish sides at home?

This has gotta be a joke right. I can’t take this stuff seriously it’s even lower than the lowest I believed we could realistically achieve as a club of our size and power.

I believe us in this forum could run United better with the resources available. Wouldn’t be hard to do a better job and that’s a fact.

We have lost 5 in the last 7… that’s not drama, that’s a crisis.

To quote Roy Keane: "It's his JOB!" He had a great game individually, but that is NOT progress no matter how much copium you huff. It's not just down to bad luck or injury, the manager has royally fecked us with his bad squad building and tactics.

You are forgetting that we've been shit for years. It's only crisis if you think we are still Sir Alex team. We are not.

This is what friend of mine repeatedly every so often. The pressure at this club is something unique. It is really tough and when take into consideration everything going on in the background (from the summer onwards). It is just so difficult.

It is really tough right now and I am not even watching every game.

It's down to the manager and the coaching staff to train the players to keep that shit down to a minimum, but whatever they are doing is making us worse.

Wasn't too bad going forward, couple of nice goals and could've easily scored a couple more

At the back though we are an absolute fckin farce. Full blown laugh a minute riot. Laurel and Hardy fcked a clown and gave birth to us. Complete and total utter shambles
You've gotta laugh

How can we win a match with two players who perform?

We have a manager that doesnt even know how to set up the team.
Its quite tragic. He actually deserves to be sacked.

Yes, a defensive four with Lindeløf, Amrabat out of position and Dalot isnt a good defence, but it doesnt get better with Amrabat playing left back.
And why?
You put Lindeløf right, Dalot Left and Varane (Maguire/Evans) center. This is not brain Surgery.
You also only field Eriksen at number 10. Either to replace Fernandes or to push him out right. This isnt brain surgery either.
So why does he play players out of position?, or why does he keep using Eriksen as a sitting midfielder when a 10 year old can see he isnt suited to that position?
And he keeps doing this.

He must understand that both Dalot and Lindeløf are backup players, and this makes the defence weaker by default.
So why doesnt a profiled manager like ETH understand things like this?
I dont get it.

United are no longer a serious football club but the equivalent of a reality tv show. The sheer ridiculousness is off the scale and it never ends.
Unfortunately, I find it exactly as entertaining as the average reality TV show. Which is to say, none at all.

It really is Murphy's law at the moment, tonight was an absolute robbery.

We were utterly dominant, creating chance after chance, we gifted them all 3 goals, as well as gifting them an extra man.

Yep, thought we played some good football going forward for quite long stretches. Rasmus and Mount both looked sharp. Eriksen was dominant after the break.

Defensively, our formation and selections are very confusing to me.

Amrabat was brought in to help shield the back 4 since Casemiro doesn't quite have the legs, right? We could have just shifted Amrabat central (instead of Mejbri), Lindelof to LB, and started Harry next to Varane.

Both of Galatasaray's first two goals happened because our CBs had to step into midfield, which they would not have had to do if we had an extra deep-lying midfielder in front of our back line.

So yea, very strange selection for me once again.
