EL W Europa League Group A

Manchester United 4:0 Feyenoord

Post-match discussion

Thu, 24 November 2016

Rooney made me like him again and reminded me of what we first bought.
Miki looked absolute class and needs to start.
Pogba is starting to look like the player we thought we'd bought.

Really good performance.

Solid performance against a reasonable team. Rooney and Miki were stand outs during the match. Even though it's only Europa I'm relieved we are still alive in the competition.

Not a suprising result. United were always going to batter Feyenoord if they showed up. It will be hard for us to reach the next stage of the EL now. We'l have to beat Fener with at least 2 goals difference.

Congrats Caf :)

You could also qualify by winning by one goal if you score more than 1, so 2-1 or 3-2 etc. You'd go through on number of goals scored between you and Fenerbahce.

Just the result we needed. EL is our only realistic shot at Champions League football next year and it's encouraging to see the team understands it too and is giving it their all.

Ironic for me to say that, seen as how a few months ago I said the exact opposite - that we can win the league and should not waste player fatigue on the EL. How times have changed.

Great tempo, playing with a bit of adventure again. For the first time in over 3 years I can't wait for the next game to see if something really good is building.

This time last year we were tied at the top of the league table, yet it was soul destroying to watch!

Very good performance from Wazza to be fair to him. Gave him MOTM.
Particularly the assist for the second goal, after what happened v Arse, that second goal was vital.

Pogba is looking scary good. Obviously opposition weren't great but he is simply a class above everyone.
Lately I've been really looking forward to watching Utd play again, and its probably largely thanks to him.

Good win last night and a good team performance, my only criticism is we should've won by more but their keeper did well keeping the score down.

It was a tough decision but my man of the match award goes to @Successful , Clive. A real dominate performance in the match day thread.

Gave Jones my man of the match because I thought he'd probably appreciate it the most.
The 4 behind Ibra were all great I thought, particularly Rooney and Mkhi. 4-1-4-1 is a good formation when we are playing teams of this level, though a couple teams we got carved open too easily.
I think Rooney and Mkhi did enough to stay in the team. I'd bring Herrera in for Mata and push Pogba forward vs West Ham (not a slight on Mata, just think we need a bit more bite in CM and one of them have to lose out).
Mata makes us tick and is arguably our best forward player.

Pogba simply doesn't offer what Juan does at 10. Play them both.

Went ahead and made a table of the permutations for the final game of the group. Green = won the group, yellow = 2nd, red = knocked out. Also takes into account all the tiebreakers.

Love this. Thanks.

Best overall performance we've had for ages, but Feyenoord were dire and let their heads drop badly. Having said that we can take credit for their bad performance through our totally dominant midfield. Pogba MOTM for me, first game I have seen him dominate and control a game from start to finish which is what so many were calling for and expecting, and I now understand what he can be and do. Having the masterful Carrick behind him enables that and together they applied a quick and high press allowing us to play transitional football right near their third. I just hope we can find such balance when Carrick needs resting.

With the platform of these two all our other forwards were completely interchangeable with no real set positions, including the substitutes, and when you look at them individually you can see that Mata, Mhki, Rooney, Rashford, Lingard, Memphis (and Martial) are all capable of playing on either side or through the middle. And so Mourinho's philosophy is to allow them to fluidly interchange, swap sides, come inside, overload, and it creates chaos for the oppositions shape and marking, as well as being very attractive to watch. When this combines with the high press and sweeping of Carrick it results in high intensity unpredictable waves of attack and looks like the United of old - "Attack Attack Attack".

Rooney getting the first goal before half time was crucial for our fragile confidence and allowed to put on an exhibition. We can see from his performance and post-match argument that an angry Rooney is an effective Rooney, just hope he keeps it up. Mhki got his chance at last but didn't impress me in the first half, didn't tackle and didn't get on the ball much, but maybe understandable considering, but he upped his game in the second half and was threatening and linking up well and so might have taken his chance but I don't attribute much to it as Feyenoord gave us far too much space, the PL is the true test.
The defense had little to do but still looked a little vulnerable fortunately Romero showed his good reflexes to keep a clean sheet. Thought Lingard was great when he came on with several shots and deserved his goal, a good sub option to have. Memphis was a bit disappointing again but who cares as we won 4-0 and he played a part in that final goal.

Let's see us do this in the PL now.

It's always a positive when Jones doesn't injure himself Oh and 4-0 is a plus.

Biggest difference was the taking of chances (except zlatan unfortunately) along with us actually pushing for more goals after 1-0

Mikhi was interesting as you could see the quality oozing out of him but you could also see his natural instinct to wander all over which I can imagine being a frustration to Jose but imo he must keep that, mourinho needs to learn to incorporate and encourage his maverick side as he sees pictures our other players don't. He's the guy to unlock something when we're struggling

What about when he got skinned and ended up on his arse when they nearly scored in the first half.
If you mean he played well because he didn't do anything idiotic then I agree !

It's his 3rd game back after an enormous amount of injury time. I thought he's looked very composed so far.

The only disappointing performance for me was Zlatan's! Lost the ball too many times, and it almost cost us at times. Also he was too selfish, always looking to shoot even though his teammates were in much better positions.

This win was refreshing, forget about the opponent, we showed lot of hungry in the field which was missing from our previous games, hungry to win the ball back or the attack towards the goal and those movement it all looked perfect.Rooney's finish for the goalwas top class seems like he's getting back to his old self, hopefully. Miki is my MOM though lot of other players( Pogba, Carrick Rooney) played well.We look like top club with Carrick on top of the defense and lets hope Jose play him is most of the matches. One more thing to take note of is, Lingard, he looked comfortable with both leg from atleast what I saw from his finishing.Lets carry this win to our PL matches, this match should motivate a team and strive towards longer success.

Not surprised, it's been coming for a while, even if it was against weaker opposition. We'll see on sunday if it's the start of some consistency. Some of the posters on here are probably confused that we managed to win a game under Mourinho - the out of date, out of touch egotistical mentalist!

The signs have been there, it just needed to click and last night it did. Now they have to carry on with the same performances.

The danger is another poor result against West Ham despite a good performance knocking their confidence. I've been so impressed with the football so far that Mourinho has tried to get us playing, particularly without the ball. I'm no expert but it seems to be a high pressing game at the right time transitioning to compact sensible defending. We're not getting it quite right all of the time though, with a fair few opposition counter attacks leading to good chances.

Very enjoyable . It was my first time in Old Trafford , and the atmosphere was amazing.
Was down in the south stand (Bobby Charlton ) , 4 rows from the pitch and really near the tunnel .
I really want to go back , it easy awesome

He did and for the stats, that's great. But his general play was poor, no movement and lost the ball stupidly too often. So yes, he made 3 assists which is great. But his overall performance does not justify a high rating

People keep banging on about weak opposition, but Feyenoord are not a bad team. They're currently 6 points ahead of PSV who are playing in the Champions League. People are talking about them like they're an unknown European team but they are a decent team.

I think it was a very good performance and we finally got the goals to match. Good performances all-round. Zlatan lost the ball one too many times but he always created a lot of chances - should have finished that chance Mkhi gave him on the other hand.

Hopefully we see more of this on Sunday, the performance and the goals.

Doesn't sound right. If they draw, Fenerbahce will be on 11 and with a United draw, we will be on 10 and second in the table.

The only way for us to top the group is for Feyenoord to win or draw and us to win as well if i am not wrong.
I didn't include all the permutations but we agree on the issue.

Quite good game indeed. At times we looked a bit not too arsed but other than that we permormed well.

Great performance. Some beautiful football being played. Carrick and Pogba combination is working so well. So happy to see the spotlight off Pogba over the last few games. He was superb last night in every aspect. If we continue this form in the league we will be fine.

Here's hoping we can follow up this performance with a similarly convincing display against West Ham - which has been our problem for a couple of years now. Continually shot ourselves in the foot by killing any early momentum.

Mkhitaryan made a big difference, unsurprisingly.

As against Arsenal and indeed most of our games this season, we're too quick to retreat into our shells rather than staying firmly on the front foot. When we get into top speed, we look so much more potent. At Old Trafford, supporters need unrelenting, attacking football.

It's likely a combination of both fitness and confidence, but I'd be a lot happier watching us if we maintained a high tempo throughout the game and only when the game is won do we think about slowing things down, keeping the ball and seeing the game out.

I do remember you asking in the match day thread, what is it like to sit in the South Stand and several people commented that there is no atmosphere there.
I guess they were wrong. Glad you enjoyed it.
Maybe you should attend more games - we could do with a bit of good luck.

Its helped having carrick back in the team that holds the fort, so pogba, mata and miki have someone behind them that can keep the game ticking. Miki and carrick defiantly made a difference

Thought it was a controlled game. Could have been exposed by a better team due to some lethargic football at times by Pogba, and the fact both Shaw and Valencia went forward a lot (which is good).

Dilemma for Jose, is Rooney and Mata are in good form, Miki showed the talent he has, so what happens to Rashford and Martial.

Also did Blind do enough to keep his place over Rojo?

Got to take the form into west ham game now.

What does it mean "great for the stats"? This disdain for so called "only good on paper" performance is silly. He still contributed to 3 goals.

Missed the game, just seen the goals. Anybody care to give me a brief summary of what happened and who played well/didn't play well? Please

Good performance against a decent side. We took some of our chances and that is what separates this game from Stoke, Burnley and Arsenal. Mikhi and Rooney stole the show but the whole team was playing good.

Zlatan was missing sitters again tho he did manage that assist for Rooney. Would be better if Carrick wasn't involved because he is 35 after all and don't think he can play two 90 minutes games in 3 days.

Also hate the fact that we're playing 4-2-3-1 again. If we have both Mata and Mikhi in same moment on the pitch I'm afraid we wil suffer defensively.
