EL L Europa League Group A

Feyenoord 1:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Thu, 15 September 2016

Too many floaters STILL on this team. Too many great players who haven't been great for us in a while or ever! and a disjointed group of talent that has not gelled as a team. Finally the defensive scheme is still sloppy. Mourinho has a lot of work to do.

We are all tired of seeing the opposition being able to get at United. I'm getting impatient with waiting for the United I knew to come back: tough, ruthless, skilled and bold. That sense of expectation and that tenacity carried United through these kind of matches.

I couldn't really see Mourinho's plan. I guess he was trying to put three in the midfield, play narrow up top and let the fullbacks be the width. Whatever the plan was, it did clearly execute.

They got bogged down with a scrappy team with a good crowd behind them. That was not going to be an easy match--especially for a heavily changed side. They didn't do much to take control.

Smalling looked good, even if a touch rusty. His return will be a big plus as he continues to get backtoward his best.

Herrera is going to do quite well as a CM in a three man midfield.

I guess that what happens when one side treats the game like a cup final and the other treats it like a friendly. They were shit but we were a bit shittier. Couldn't care less about that competition. What I didn't like was that Pogba, Herrera and Bailly played the full 90 with a league game coming up in three days.

Just watched replay and must say what a waste of using players from first XI...Ibra,Pogba should never been on the road.TFM and Carrick sitting on the bench,Memphis,Young coming as sub...all that talk about next month with billion games and he still cant resist.

Not only some played 90 min.,we lost the game on top, wont even bother about our style of play tonight.

We have to give Mourinho time to know his players. We had a great summer of transfers, but the best acquisition was Mourinho. We couldn't be in better hands, and the team will come good.

We said the same thing about LVG.. Looking like we signed the wrong manager out of the two at the moment.(Guardiola)

Pretty awful. The Europa is our golden ticket to the CL if things dont work out in the PL and we are treating it like a LC game, from the manager to the players

Need more players signed in Jan. Rojo is useless if theres no Shaw and we need a holding mid real bad to support Pogba if we are not going to use Schweinstieger.

Jose underestimated Feyenoord imo. When I saw there is no Zlatan in starting eleven, I thought he was taking a big risk. Feyenoord won all their games so far in Eredivise, it's a 5 victory plus this one today. Conceded only 2 goals so far and scored 15 goals. They are on fire, and facing them as an away team we shouldn't rest Ibra, if he starts I reckon we would have score the first goal and won the game.

Its easy for a home team to park a bus and kick holes out of an opponent if the officials are crap and won't make decisions. Enjoy the win, but remember other small clubs have beaten us and played far better than your shower.
How the heck did El Ahmadi get away with a card I will never know. It's like he could literally Kung Fu kick us and yet not even get a talking to by the ref!

Really disappointed in the performance, I felt we needed to lift ourselves up after the derby but there were too many changes in the team. I question if half of them are even match fit. Hopefully we put this behind us and take the front foot against Watford with a higher tempo.

Feyenoord played cohesively, and pressed well. Also helped by the ref who let them get away with tons of niggling fouls (22) that led to only 1 yellow card.

Trying not to read too much into it, but we really didn't play well as a team.

Zero fecks given by the players, I try to do the same but damn that was shite.

Herrera and both CBs were okay.

Apart from Martial chance, we almost didnt do anything meaningful in first half. To quote LvG, some players lacked match rhythms. The likes of Darmian and Schneiderlin looked like they were still in pre season level. There was a disconnection in our transitional play.

A manager of Mourinho's caliber should be able to compete in both the league and Europe. I'm disappointed by his comments pregame not rating the competition. Does our level magically go up if this was a CL tie played yesterday?

I agree that Mourinho should be able to compete in England and Europe but is the Europa League really Europe? I mean the Thursday night games are a massive hindrance on our league chances.

That was an LvG level of performance. No plan, no intent, no passion, no clue.
Spineless, shoddy almost fraud of a performance.

Mourinho has the best win percentage record of any manager in premier league history (66% win vs 65% SAF). He is simply a serial winner and synonymous with success. Pep looks a good signing for city, at the moment, as you say, but we will see in May who was the better signing.

Even if Pep was perhaps the best choice for City, he would not necessarily be a good choice for us, we are at a different stage of the football cycle where we are still trying to build a good functioning team (still in transition). Jose is better suited for us.

It was one bad game, but there were several factors that contributed to our poor play, such as 8 changes from our previous squad, several players without any match fitness, and the constant fouls allowed by ref.

A lot of sore knee's this morning? We saw loads of games like this under Fergie, first European performance away and a bunch of rusty players who need games. It seems that a couple of years of awful management has turned everyone paranoid.

The eyes were definitely on Sunday where the points needed are much more important in building genuine momentum.

I disagree slightly there. If you look at the team sheet we should have been beaten them easily. There are still too many players who are not performing (Martial and Pogba were pretty poor) and some (like Rojo and Darmian) just are not United material. This is clearly a work in progress.

Citys squad didn't really stand out prior to the new manager arrivals. It had (and still has) a spine of old players, with a definite lack of quality in central areas such as goal keeper, both side backs and central midfield.

They now have a squad that is around the level of the United squad in my opinion. I even think United can field the strongest XI when all players are fit because of no weaknesses in the team, compared to City who has very average side backs, an unproven goalkeeper and unreliable centre backs.
There is really nothing average about City fullbacks. They keep being grossly underrated. They are all very solid going forward, and apart from Kolarov, solid one on one defenders. City have also never ever lacked quality in midfield. All they lacked was a manager to organise their off the ball and defensive work. Even in defence were Pellegrini made solid defenders like Otamendi seem shit. Remember, Save for Stones and Bravo City took us to school with last seasons team for 40 mins.

I don't see where the overreactions are.

The reality is that most fans were excited to finally have a manager worth his salt in charge of a team that was massively improved over the summer finally be able to play these kinds of games and reflect the on-paper superiority onto the pitch, and win the match comfortably.

Instead we got more of the same from the last three years, a pathetic display where you just knew United would concede late after a disjointed performance where openings were rarely created, let alone exploited. Lo and behold, that's exactly what happened.

Save the bullshit excuses about "not being up for the Europa League". Get off your high horse, we're in this tournament for a reason. You play a competitive game against a team you're much better than, you expect to win; whatever the competition. The notion that the tournament has any impact on their will to win just reflects even worse on them and their mental state during these games.

Just stop making excuses. That was our second defeat in a row and it was an extremely disappointing display and result and those involved are being called out on it. There's nothing wrong with saying that.

I thought darmian was ok too. But rojo, was really bad and the worst thing was I half expected that. Since we have blind shaw and timo we really do not need him there. Blind is 2x better at left back and shaw is 3x better. Rojo should never be anywhere near the team sheet unless ALL our defenders and midfielders are injured, and even then I would put Rooney back there instead of him.

Ah the only the locals understand the culture crap which is a load of bollox and self righteous crap. If the culture is being apologetic to constantly underperforming players then we need to get rid of that shit and the players need to be hold accountable by the fans a lot more to make sure they don´t rest on their laurels and show up half arsed thinking there wont be any consequence to putting in less than 100% effort. You can have off days but with the wages they get then less than 100% effort is totally unacceptable weather its the EL or not as most of the team helped us getting there they have zero right to feel they are better than that.. just because you wear the red devil jersey dosn´t make you entitled to anything other than what you earn on the pitch and the players need to realize this.

Really. I bet your're a 90s baby? Do you realise that we went for nearly a quarter century without winning anything of note. Nearly 25 years mate!!! Yet United still maintained a huge fan base. Why? They kept the faith and always believed. True fans!!!

If any set of fans had a right to revolt it would of been those fans that you are clearly so being so disparaging about. Yet we have fans who talk about being accountabiliity after 2 poor results. Wow. What makes it worst is the absolute venom in some of the posts!! Feck me if there was a direct link from players wages and the food on your table I could understand.

Nowadays you can pretty much watch every Man Utd game from the comfort of your armchair. Wasn't the case back then. In most cases to see yot heroes play you needed to make sacrifices and go watch them. 10 minutes on match of the day didn't cut it mate.

So yeah I do believe that old school supporters or locals as you call it have the right to talk bolloxs and be self righteous. It's just most of us choose not to be. We leave that to the plastics!

Some fans need to be more respectful and remember without the history you wouldn't have the things that you seem to take for granted.

Well, exactly.

Not to mention that a lot of us will have tried to cope with the derby humiliation by convincing ourselves that Mourinho's a serial winner and an inspirational leader who will get an immediate reaction out of the team and we'd steamroll Feyenoord, making a real statement of intent about life under our new manager.

And what did we actually get? None of the above, that's for damn sure.

Watching the game back, too many of our players prefer the ball at their feet and refuse to make runs towards the open channels.

Our off the ball movement is absolutely horrific for a top team. This is an issue that goes back to Fergie's last season too.

I don't understand how it's an continuing issue.

wondering who kidnapped Martial during the summer and replaced him wit a Doppelganger
Can't be the same lad who was playing last season!

It's our single biggest failing as a team. You're right that it goes back years but Vangle's alleged insistence that players should maintain rigid positions on the pitch has really embedded the problem.

Of course, you'd expect more from players he didn't get a chance to inoctrinate. There's no Van Gaal excuses for Pogba's worryingly static performance.

Leicester literally just built a title on being strong defensively and counter-attacking over and over again.
Don't get me wrong. I got no problem with sitting back and hitting teams on the counter as a strategy but it should only be used when needed and if the score justifies it in the end.
But a club with United's recources should aim to enforce a more dominant style of play against teams like Feyenoord. Their whole squad gets paid just a little more than Rooney and Mata get at United. The gulf in quality should be obvious. Playing reactive tactics instead of proactive ones against a team of that quality was uncalled for and I bet the players would have loved to just have a go at them. This one is as much on Mourinho's tactics as on the players underperforming.

I think this is why Jose likes working with a small squad. He will have his 18 players, which will only change through injury, suspensions. I think you might find he will be tempted to use those 18 in all games now and some players will be frozen out completely. Not just BFS. As people said the CB's were fine as was Herrera. Morgan started well but faded, which is hardly surprising. The fullbacks were bad, Darmian because he just doesn't suit United, not that he is a bad player. Rojo however is just plain atrocious. Mata unless we play a No.10 offers nothing wide in a team that needs pace injected. We have too many No. 10's. Martial is seriously short of form and confidence at the moment. I hope it comes back soon.
Talksport actually for once made a good point this morning about Pogba, that he like Modric when he first came, has to get used to the PL. Modric was hopeless in his first season. Yes Paul was at United as a kid, but to say he is used to the PL at first team level is not true.

I honestly don't understand how people are saying martial was poor, he was beating players easily just didn't get the service. Is it that missed chance that is swaying people's (selective) memories becuase I agree he should have buried that. Didint make it a bad performance from him though.

Finishing was one of his greatest attributes last season. It will come back as long as Jose stays patient with him. He just seems to have lost his composure a bit.

He did well. Lack of link up play/overlaps was the main factor in him not getting a goal or assist i think.

I think the fullbacks killed us last night. We all know how big a part of our attacking play involves the overlapping fullbacks.

Herrera at least looked like he was trying. He should get a start, I think.

I came on here to type that. We missed Valencia and Shaw big time. Also Daley Blind tbh, think we'd have been more composed with him on the field. Not to say Smalling and Bailly were bad though, they both played well.

Doesn't matter much and typical overreaction by the caf IMO. Far more confident with Mourinho as our manager getting 9 points at home and a few points away from home than before.

Put me in for this as well.

A basically terrible game with both sides looking happy with a point & anything else is a bonus, they got the bonus. No firm conclusions to be drawn with 8 changes & a fair few playing first games.

Except that Depay is a dud and can't leave soon enough. Let's wait & see on the rest.

That game was everything I feared about us in Europe this season.

We should have used this tournament to give our young players an opportunity. A team with the likes of TFM, CBJ, Pereira, Januzaj etc all starting would have been very interesting to watch. Instead we just saw a lot of mediocre senior players play to their usual level and get beat. What did we learn from that? That Rojo, Darmian, Young etc aren't good enough? Knew that already.

I'm amazed at the number of people that think that getting out of the Europea League earlier will bode well for the domestic campaign.

If we go out at the group stage, the last 32 or even the last 16 of the Europa League, we won't be winning the Premier League or finishing second in all likelihood. Peformance in the Europa League will be just as highly indicative of where we currently stand as games in the Premier League are. The number of sides who can turn it on and off, focusing on what they consider key games, and who are successful in doing so are very few in number. Most top sides build up a winning mentality and go deep, or attempt to go deep, in every competition they enter. The idea that we are anywhere near good enough to pick and choose what we want to win is ludicrous.

We could be very good in the Premier League for the rest of the season and still only finish second or third, or even fourth: the competition is tough. Give me an FA Cup, a League Cup or Europa League over anything apart from winning the league.

The overreaction is so unnecessary, it's just the fecking Europa League.
